Simple Translation

Oh, my friend! The auspicious time for the wedding has been fixed for tomorrow. In my dream, I saw a youth, known by divine names such as narasimhan, mAdhavan and gOvindhan, entering the maNappandhal, decorated with areca plants, which have spathes in them.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

nALai vadhuvai maNam enRU nALittu – fixing the grand wedding function for tomorrow. What is the underlying opinion for not fixing the marriage either today or after four [few] days, but fixing it for tomorrow? If it is after a long time [in ANdAL’s opinion, four [few] days is a long time], she would not be able to tolerate the delay. If it is said that if it is held today, due to excessive ecstasy, she may not be able to sustain herself, just like a thirsty man gulps down water in a hurry and dies due to choking. Just as it has been said in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 116 -15 & 16 “praharshENAvarudhdhA sA vyAjahAra na kinchana l abravIchcha hariSrEshta: sIthAmaprathijalpathIm ll kim thvam chinthayasE dhEvi kinnu mAm nAbhibhAshasE ll” ((after hearing about SrI rAma’s victory from hanuman), sIthAp pirAtti, overcome by excessive ecstasy, did not utter a word. Looking at her, hanuman said “Oh dhEvi [divine consort of SrI rAma]! What are you thinking? Why are you not saying anything to me?” Thinking that only if he reduced her happiness to a certain extent, would she be able to sustain herself, hanuman further said “Did my telling you that SrI rAma has become victorious, not to your liking?”) As soon as she heard hanuman’s words, her flood of happiness receded by half. Sustaining herself, did she not say “Since my happiness choked my throat, I could not utter a word”

nALittu – all the activities for the marriage could be conducted only if the day fixed for the marriage is an auspicious one. The opinion here is that after comparing their [ANdAL’s and kaNNa pirAn’s] birth stars, the date for the marriage was finalised.

pALai kamugu parisudaip pandhal kIzh – under the decorated shed [where the wedding ceremony was to be held] which was further decorated by planting areca tree with spathes in them.

parisudaip pandhal – the term parisu would refer both to eminence and beauty. The areca plant appeared as if it had grown there, from the time it sprouted and not as if it had been transplanted from elsewhere. It was very beautiful.

kOLari – this speaks about the arrival of a mighty lion. mArIcha tells rAvaNa, in SrI rAmAyaNam AraNya kANdam 37-38 [when rAvaNa seeks his help in abducting sIthAp pirAtti] “apramEyam hi thaththEjO yasya sA janakAthmajA l na thvam samarthas thAm harthum rAmachApASrayam vanE ll” (The effulgence of that SrI rAma, with whom sIthAp pirAtti, the daughter of janaka, is together, is beyond one’s imagination. You are not capable of abducting her, who has taken refuge under SrI rAma’s bow, in the forest). Just as it has been said here about the effulgence which SrI rAma had, kaNNan entered that pandhal [decorated dais] with a swagger, displaying with pride that he is the consort of SrI mahAlakshmi.

mAdhavan – the divine lord of periya pirAtti [SrI mahAlakshmi]. The opinion here is that since he had been together with her always, he came manifesting his quality of being a connoisseur.

gOvindhan – one who makes himself amenable to the lowly cows and cowherd people. The opinion here is that since no one would know as to when or from whom any hurdle would come during the wedding event, he moved with all in a respectful manner.

enbAn– the opinion here is that these divine names are known throughout the world [and that he is that famous].

Or kALai – even if he did not have any of the eminences mentioned until now, he came with the unique stature of a bull, such that people fell head over heels, on seeing him. None of the friends, mothers or relatives of the bride could say “We cannot say that the bridegroom is no match for the bride”

kALai pugudhak kanAk kaNdEn thOzhi nAn – [addressing her friend, ANdAL says] earlier, did you not take efforts to make me realise that he is of appropriate age for me and is qualified for me to deepen my love for him? Now, I am taking the effort to make you realise that he is the most apt person for me.

Next, we will consider the 3rd pAsuram of this decad.
