Ninth pAsuram – Since the salt-pan does not unite with the sea (like herself who is not united with emperumAn), she returns to her home and falls on her bed. She sees the oil-lamp which is burning there. Assuming that the oil-lamp too is burning out of virahajvaram (anguish of separation), she asks it “are you also suffering?”.

- nondhu ArAk kAdhal nOy – the suffering never ends in love-sickness which desiccates (dehydrates) the AthmA which is very tender.
- mellAvi – AthmA which is very meek due to being immersed in bhagavAn‘s qualities; AthmA which cannot even bear the touch of air.
- nandhA viLakkamE – the lamp which never turns off. Though the flame is changing every moment by continuous burning, parAnkusa nAyaki, who is in disturbed state of mind [due to separation from emperumAn], does not see the subtle change in the flame and says the [same] flame is alive for ever [arumpadham – the main meaning is – AzhwAr says that even if the flame dies, the suffering would end immediately – instead it keeps on burning and seeking union with bhagavAn‘s like AzhwAr who himself is seeking the same].
- nIyum aLiyaththAy – You who are the one who helps others by providing light, are suffering yourself.
- aLiyaththAy – you who are to be shown compassion by all. You, who exist purely for others, are yourself suffering from disease!
- sendhAmarai … – Did you desire to have the thuLasi garland from emperumAn, just like sIthA pirAtti (as seen in srI rAmAyaNam ayOdhyA kANdam 16.21) “pathisammAnithA sIthA bharththAram asithEkshaNA …” (one who was honoured [with a garland] by srI rAma and one who has beautiful black eyes followed srI rAma up to the gate praying for his well-being)?
- sem thAmaraith thadam kaN – highlighting the freshness of emperumAn‘s eyes when he glanced lovingly
- sem kani vAy – highlighting the reddish nature of his divine lips when he speaks sweet words
- emperumAn … – with the desire to acquire the thuLasi garland of emperumAn who captured me fully through his glances and sweet words.
- vEvAyE – the flame which will go off easily even for the air from fan – you are burning fiercely now!
