There are three thaniyans for periyAzhwAr thirumozhi, one in samskrutham and two in thamizh.

This thaniyan, in samskrutham, was mercifully composed by SrIman nAthamunigaL.

gurumukham anadhIthya prAha vEdhAn aSEshAn

SvaSuram amaravandhyam ranganAthasya sAkshAth

narapathi parikluptham – arranged by vallabhadhEvan, the king
Sulkam – the poRkizhi [treasure kept inside a silk cloth]
AdhAthu kAma: – having the thought to win
gurumukham anadhIthya – not having learnt through an AchAryan (teacher)
aSEshAn vEdhAn – all the vEdhams (which are required to establish supremacy of emperumAn)
prAha – one who extolled (with emperumAn’s krupA, mercy)
amara vandhyam – apt to be worshipped by celestial entities
ranganAthasya sAkshAth SvaSuram – as the father-in-law of SrI ranganAthar himself
dhvijakula thilakam – one who is the most distinguished among brAhmaNas
tham vishNuchiththam – that vishNuchiththar [periyAzhwAr]
namAmi – I bow down to

Simple Translation

pANdiya king vallabhadhEvan had arranged a poRkizhi as the wager to win a debate on establishing the supreme entity. With the intention of winning it, periyAzhwAr, who had not learnt from an AchAryan, extolled from vEdhams, without leaving anything, about the supremacy of emperumAn. He is apt to be worshipped by celestial entities too. He is the father-in-law of SrI ranganAthar himself. I bow down to that vishNuchiththar [periyAzhwAr].

Simple Translation

We donned on our heads, the divine, lotus-like feet of those who said once “SrIvillipuththUr is surrounded by splendorous fortified walls”. We also said “In an earlier time, when purushArtham was not known, periyAzhwAr had established the supremacy of Sriman nArayaNan and claimed the treasure [given by the pANdiya king] by quoting from vEdhams”. Oh, heart! As a result of doing and saying these, we eliminated our path of going to the bottomless pit, called as narakam (hell).

periyAzhwAr quoted extensively from vEdhams to establish the supremacy of SrIman nArAyaNan and won the treasure kept as the prize money for knowledge. pANdiya king Vallabha dhEvan celebrated this event. Many people blew conches on their hands, saying “bhattar pirAn, who is the benefactor for brAhmaNas has come”. His divine feet are our refuge.
