Simple Translation

Oh, monsoon clouds, which appear on thirumalai during the rainy season! I keep reciting, with musical notes, the divine names of emperumAn, who fights victoriously in battlefields, during times of battle. I keep falling off like the yellow-coloured leaves of erukkam plant, during rainy reason. Will he not mercifully speak a word to me, for at least one day?

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

kAr kAlaththu ezhuginRa – Weren’t you the ones who appeared during the monsoon period, which he [emperumAn] had told me that he would appear? Though he did not come, since you, who have his complexion, have come, it is helpful.

kAr mugilgAL ….. porudhavanAr – you have appeared at the time which was intended for you, with dark colour, in order to help the world [to get water]. emperumAn too, in earlier times, would not appear until his followers faced any difficulty. Then, he too would appear, remove the enemies of his followers and get that dark complexion.

pEr solli …… vIzhvEnai – we had thought that during this bad phase, we could sustain ourselves by reciting his divine names. She says that that itself became the reason for her affliction.

nIr kAlaththu erukkil am pazha ilai pOl vIzhvEnai – during the summer season, the leaves of erukkam plant would start drying up, drained of their milk. Once water droplets, coming from rains, fall on them, they would wither off. Similar to that, as soon as I recite his divine name, I too stagger and fall down. The meaning hinted is that when she was already anguished due to separation from emperumAn, reciting his divine name weakened her further, making her to stagger and fall down.

vAr kAlaththu oru nAL – one day, during the long period of time which is extending.

oru nAL tham vAsagam thandhu aruLArE – just as he is focussed on not showing his face forever, is he focussed on not saying a word too? The meaning hinted is that even though he is not appearing in person, could he not say a word? sIthAp pirAtti says in SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 39-10 “jIvanthIm mAm yathA rAmas sambhAvayathi kIrthimAn l thath thathA hanuman vAchyO vAchA dharmamavApnuhi ll´ (You should tell a word to the eminent SrI rAmapirAn to honour me who is alive). Just as it has been said here, he could have, at the least, said a word. Similar to sIthAp pirAtti telling a word to hanuman, here ANdAL says a word to the clouds, who are going as messengers.

Next, we will consider the 9th pAsuram of this decad.
