Simple Translation
emperumAn had churned ocean which has many conches and which is eminent. Oh, cool clouds who roam around thirumalai where that emperumAn has mercifully taken residence! I, servitor to that emperumAn, am appealing to his perfect, divine feet. Tell him that if he would come for, at the least, one day and unite with me such that the vermillion paste applied on my bosoms gets destroyed, my life will be sustained.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
sangamAkadal kadaindhAn – he churned the ocean, whose depth cannot be determined, such that conches, which were at the ocean bed, came to the top.
kadaindhAn thaN mugilgAL – aren’t you residing in the same place where emperumAn, who churned the ocean, putting his divine form to difficulties in order to give those who prayed to him what they desired and who sought other benefits from him [instead of himself], resides?
kadaindhAn thaN mugilgAL – these clouds, by manifesting their cool forms, removed his ennui which resulted from churning the ocean.
vEngadaththuch chengaNmAl – thiruvEngadam is the place where he mercifully came to reside in order to shower his mercy on those who sought him, so that he could overcome the shortcoming which he experienced when he helped the celestial entities who sought other benefits from him. He would show his vAthsalyam (motherly forbearance) through the glance of his eyes on those who came there to seek himself. When he is not coming to her to shower his mercy, why is she striving like this? This will be clear only when one goes to thiruvEngadam and sees emperumAn, when one would realise the affection that he has for her and how he is not even sleeping, thinking of her. Did he not suffer like this, just as it has been mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 36-44 “anidhras sathatham rAma: supthO’pi cha narOththama: l sIthEthi madhurAm vANIm vyAharan prathibhudhyathE ll” (SrI rAma (who has got separated from sIthAp pirAtti) is always without sleep. Even if he, who is the best among men, sleeps for a moment, he wakes up, always reciting the beautiful word ‘sIthE’)?
sEvadikkIzh adivIzhchchi viNNappam – fall at his divine feet and make an appeal. What is the appeal?
kongai mEl kungumaththin kuzhambu azhiyap pugundhu orunAL thangumEl ennAvi thangum – tell him “Believing that you would come, in order to embrace you, I had applied vermillion paste on my bosoms. If you make it to provide benefit [by embracing me], I would be able to sustain myself”. Is he not omniscient? Is there a need to tell him? Since men, who have beards on their chins, do not understand the agonies experienced by women, who have bosoms, it has to be explicitly told. Instead of that, he might have thought “Even if I go, she will not be able to sustain herself”. In order to remove that doubt, tell him that there is a way by which I could sustain myself.
kongaimEl kungamththin kuzhambu azhiyap pugundhu – bosoms will not sustain themselves, when separated from him, even when they are not decorated. Decorating them with vermillion paste became the reason for hurting them further. kuzhambu – made into a paste such that it will never dry up. Even after these clouds convey the message to him, if he does not come, the vermillion paste, expecting that he would come, may dry up. Since he is eminent and totally independent, it cannot be said emphatically that “He will come by this time”. Since she is dependent on him fully, hoping that “He will come now” she may keep decorating her bosoms, keeping the paste wet.
kuzhambu azhiyap pugundhu – isn’t kaNNan of such nature that he will enter when no one would know that he is coming!
oru nAL thangumEl – if he could stay for one day. For decorating with vermillion paste continuously, would staying for one day be enough?
en Avi thangum – it may not be enough for enjoyment. But it is enough for me to sustain my life.
oru nAL thangumEl en Avi thangum enRu uraiyIrE – The status mentioned in an earlier pAsuram (3rd) “gOvindhan guNam pAdi ……Avi kAththiruppEnE” has been crossed. Tell him that only if he embraces me for one day, would my life be sustained.
