avathArikai (Introduction)

Simple Translation

Oh, one who sleeps in earlier part of nights such that your pious-flower-like eyes are under the control of sleep! Those who have assembled here are not only those who would be your consorts, but also include your mothers-in-law, their mothers and such relatives. This mischievous act of yours is not at all appropriate. We are saying this word, truthfully. Oh, one who is like a tender leaf to the clan of cowherd people! Mercifully give the dresses which are on the kurundham tree.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

mAmimAr makkaLE allOm maRRum ingu ellArum pOndhAr – kaNNan started indulging in more and more mischievous activities. Knowing that the reason for his indulging in such activities is only because no one in the town will know of such activities, they frightened him saying “Those in the town will know of your mischievous activities”. kaNNan replied, saying “I will tell them ‘I engaged in these activities only with those who are of my age and who I am going to marry’” To that, they say ..

mAmimAr makkaLE allOm – among those who have assembled here are not only those who have undertaken a religious ritual in order to marry you, but also their mothers, and other aged people. Thus, it is not only the cowherd girls whom you thought had come here, but also your mothers-in-law in whose presence you would feel ashamed to carry out these mischievous acts. They frightened him further saying that they will go to town and reveal his activities here. kaNNan, hearing this, said “Even after knowing me, could you bring these people who will be a hindrance to our union in this secluded place?” They respond, saying ….

thUmalark kaNgaL vaLarath thollai irAth thuyilvAnE – They said “By habit, you used to play with the girls in the early part of the night and sleep well in the later part of the night. We thought that you would be fast asleep at this time and that is the reason for bringing them here. We did not know that you will act just the opposite of your earlier habits”.  “What is the purpose in saying that now? Aren’t you seeing that I had come ahead of you people?” Saying this, he started indulging in further impudent activities. They tell him, seeing that …

sEmamEl anRidhu sAla – “What you are doing is not good for us. We are saying that you and we, should be together, all the time. Your activities will not allow that to happen. They will even make us not to get together ever again”. Hearing their words, kaNNan asks “Who said like this?”

nAm idhu sonnOm – they said “We said this”. Hearing this, feigning that he was frightened, kaNNan said “How can I go against this AchArya vachanam (respectful master’s words]? What you have said is very appropriate only. Haven’t you people said this!” They tell him “Don’t take this playfully”

chikkanach chonnOm – “We said this truthfully. If you do not consider this, many unfavourable results will follow your wrongful activities”. kaNNan said “Let me go to any hell for going against this AchArya vachanam” So saying, he donned a few soft dresses on his waist, left the remaining dresses on the kurundham tree and told them “See, how they fit my tender nature”. They tell him …

kOmaLa Ayar kozhundhE! kurundhidaik kURai paNiyAy – “The dresses look beautiful on you. You are like the tender leaf of herd-people clan. We are not asking for the dresses which are apt for your tender divine form. Mercifully give us the dresses which are on the tree and which do not have the distinction of having a connection with your divine form”

Next, we will consider the 9th pAsuram of the this decad.
