Simple Translation

Oh kaNNA, oh mAdhavA, one who indulges in mischievous deeds! We have constructed toy-houses with the help of white, fine sand, (making everyone who looks at it) to be amazed. Even if you destroy these houses, our hearts will only break and melt; we will not become angry with you. Aren’t they eyes which are present in your face?

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

veLLai nuNmaNaR koNdu theLLi – Being as white as a well spread-out moon light, using fine sand and strewing them. If there are small pebbles [in the sand], they may hurt his feet and kAman will get angry and leave since he has lowly qualities only. Hence, they are selecting find sand and constructing toy-houses.

vIdhivAy nAngaL izhaiththa kOlam azhiththiyAgilum – even if you destroy the beautiful patterns of toy-houses which we have created, in the street.

vichiththirappada kOlam – They are telling him – did you see its beauty? If anyone sees it, he / she cannot destroy it. You destroy it, after seeing it.

azhiththiyAgilum – the opinion is that if he sees it, even he, who is hard-hearted, will not destroy it. When kaNNan asks them “If I destroy, what will you do?”, they respond …..

unRanmEl ….. kaNdAy – even if you destroy our houses, we will think “How beautiful is the way in which he is destroying the houses! we will lose our heart to you and melt. We will not get angry with you”. Is it that they really do not have any anger? Though they say these words for the sake of saying them, they are angry inside, looking at the way that he is torturing them. Similarly, even though kaNNan knows that they are indeed hurt inside and that they are saying these words outwardly, he is intent on destroying their houses. However, ensuring that his intent is not seen by them, he, with the pride of being the consort of SrI mahAlakshmi, keeps wandering here and there, as if he is looking for something else, adjusting his locks etc. Knowing all these, they say further …

kaLLa mAdhavA …. kaNgaL allavE – Oh, the wicked person! Aren’t you destroying our houses after seeing them? Aren’t they eyes, which you have on your face? While you are together with SrI mahAlakshmi, who is a purushakAra bhUthai (one who recommends jIvAthmAs to emperumAn) we thought that it would help us in attaining our benefit; but it appears that you have become too proud because of that. We thought that your being with beautiful hair etc is for our enjoyment; but that itself has become the cause for your looking after them only, and proving that you are engaged with other things [instead of caring for your followers]. We thought that the divine eyes on your face are an aid for you to demonstrate your compassion towards us. However, they appear to be defective [like night-blindness] or like dots on the feathers of a peacock [serving no purpose to your followers]. They go with the name of eyes, entrapping people the moment they see those eyes. Thus, they say that everything is deceptive. Isn’t she herself going to say in nAchchiyAr thirumozhi 14-4 “kaN ennum nedum kayiRu” (eye which is actually a lasso to imprison others)?

Next, we will consider the 6th pAsuram of this decad.
