poigai AzhwAr’s place of appearance is thiruvekkhA dhivya dhEsam near kAnchIpuram. He appeared from a flower in a pond (poigai) as an ayOnijar (not born from the womb of a mother). The first 3 AzhwArs are all ayOnijars and appeared from flowers. poigai AzhwAr’s birth month is aippasi and birth star is thiruvONam. He composed the prabandham called mudhal thiruvandhAdhi. There are 100 pAsurams composed as anthAdhi (the last word of a pAsuram becomes the first word of the next pAsuram). He was immersed in the supremacy (paravAsudhEva form) and greatness of emperumAn. poigai AzhwAr appeared on this earth on the great day of aippasi month, thiruvONam star. May he live for many years (pallANdu)! mangaLASAsanams to him! The word vAzhiyE refers to doing mangaLASAsanam.
thirukkachchi mAnagaram sezhikka vandhOn vAzhiyE
His place of birth is thiruvekkhA, which is present in the dhivya dhEsam of kAnchIpuram. kAnchIpuram is a big town, thiruvekkhA is a small part of that big city. The town of kAnchIpuram attained great glory/flourish because of his birth! bhagavath vishayam (the glories of emperumAn) began to spread throughout this world! He is the first AzhwAr and it was through him that emperumAn gave us the very first prabandham.The town of thirukkachchi is one of the main reasons/centers for the growth of SrIvaishNava sampradhAyam. It is for this reason that the town of thirukkachchi came to be glorified! May poigai AzhwAr, who appeared in thirukkachchi, live long (pallANdu) !

He composed 100 pAsurams in anthAdhi kramam (the last word of a pAsuram becomes the first word of the next pAsuram in anthAdhi kramam) with the starting verses as “vaiyam thagaLiyA vArkadalE neyyAga”. May that AzhwAr live long!
vanasa malark karuvadhanil vandhamaindhAn vAzhiyE
AzhwAr appeared in a lotus flower. The flower itself became a womb and he took birth from that womb! May the AzhwAr who appeared in this manner, live long (pallANdu)! Even today, the pond from which AzhwAr took birth can be seen. We come to know that AzhwAr appeared in a flower from this same pond.
veyya kadhirOn thannai viLakkittAn vAzhiyE
AzhwAr lit a lamp using the sun that is referred to as “kadhiravan”. AzhwAr showed the order as “vaiyam thagaLiyA vArkadalE neyyAga veyya kadhirOn viLakkAga” and thus AzhwAr used the sun as a metaphor for the lamp! May such poigai AzhwAr live for many years (pallANdu)!
vEnkatavar thirumalaiyai virumbumavan vAzhiyE
poigai AzhwAr had great involvement towards thiruvEngadamudaiyAn. He has composed many pAsurams on thiruvEngadamudaiyAn in his prabandham, mudhal thiruvandhAdhi. May such poigai AzhwAr live for many years (pallANdu)!

poigai AzhwAr is referred to as a Sage. A sage (muni) means one who constantly contemplates the greatness of emperumAn in his mind and remains in meditation. pallANdu (many long years of life) to his beautiful form and feet that are desirable like gold.

The greatness of bhUthaththAzhwAr
The birthplace of bhUthaththAzhwAr is thirukkadalmallai which is known as mahAbalipuram in modern days. He appeared in a flower present in the holy pond at this dhivya dhEsam. His birth star is aippasi month avittam star. He composed iraNdAm thiruvandhAdhi prabandham. It contains 100 pAsurams in the order of anthAdhi (the last word of a pAsuram becomes the first word of the next pAsuram in anthAdhi). He was also immersed in the supremacy of emperumAn (like poigai AzhwAr). The first three AzhwArs had great attachment towards thrivikrama avathAra of emperumAn. emperumAn, as thrivikrama, took a giant form and showed that the entire world is His property.

The greatness of pEyAzhwAr
pEyAzhwAr appeared in thirumayilai. His birth star is sadhayam in the month of aippasi. He composed the prabandham called mUnRAm thiruvandhAdhi (100 pAsurams) which is also in anthAdhi format. Just like poigai AzhwAr and bhUthaththAzhwAr, pEyAzhwAr was also involved in the supremacy of emperumAn.

With the help of the lamps lit by poigai AzhwAr and bhUthaththAzhwAr , pEyAzhwAr was the first one to have dharSan (view) of pirAtti and emperumAn’s thirumEni. In that joy, he sang 100 pAsurams that begin with “thiruk kaNdEn ponmEni kaNdEn”. May that pEyAzhwAr live long!
siRandha aippasiyil sadhayam seniththa vaLLal vAzhiyE
May the most generous, the one who appeared in the auspicious aippasi sadhayam star, live long! The reason for hailing pEyAzhwAr’s generosity is his compassion. When he had the darshan of pirAtti and emperumAn, he did not stop with enjoying for himself!, but he composed pAsurams to share that experience with everyone!
marukkamazhum mayilai nagar vAzha vandhOn vAzhiyE
He appeared in the town of mayilai, which is surrounded by the fragrance of marjoram flowers (marikkozhundhu) and lived there! May such pEyAzhwAr live long!
malarkkariya neidhal thanil vandhudhithAn vAzhiyE
He appeared in the black coloured neidhal flower. He was also not born of a mother’s womb (ayOnijar). May such pEyAzhwAr live long!
nerukkidavE idaikazhiyil ninRa selvan vAzhiyE
It was on a stormy night at thirukkOvalUr dhivya dhESam, when all the three AzhwArs were standing in the narrow alley, they all felt a stampede and being squeezed in that dark night. It was none other than emperumAn along with pirAtti who appeared among the AzhwArs to be in the company of His devotees! Since it was dark, poigai AzhwAr and bhUthaththAzhwAr lit lamps with their songs, and it was pEyAzhwAr who first had the dharSan of pirAtti and emperumAn. May the pEyAzhwAr, who stood in that alley as a person bestowed with the riches of emperumAn’s grace and who had the dharSan of emperumAn and pirAtti along with the other 2 AzhwArs, live long!

It was pEyAzhwAr who witnessed emperumAn’s most radiant form along with sudharSana chakra on one hand and pAnchajanya Sankha on the other hand! May such pEyAzhwAr live long!
perukkamudan thirumazhisaip pirAn thozhuvOn vAzhiyE
pEyAzhwAr was worshiped by thirumazhisai AzhwAr with great devotion. thirumazhisai AzhwAr was well learned in other philosophies and did deep analysis in many spiritual paths before concluding that SrImannArAyaNa is the supreme Lord. pEyAzhwAr was instrumental in the reform of thirumazhisai AzhwAr. It can be understood that pEyAzhwAr and thirumazhisai AzhwAr lived during the same time period! History shows us that thirumazhisai AzhwAr lived in this world for around 4700 years with the help of his yogic powers. pEyAzhwAr identified that thirumazhisai AzhwAr was lacking in his knowledge and devotion to emperumAn and hence appealed to his intellect, gave the best of knowledge (upadhESa) and transformed him to be a great devotee of emperumAn SrImannArAyaNa. thirumazhisai AzhwAr remained devoted to pEyAzhwAr since then! May such pEyAzhwAr live long!!
