avathArikai (Introduction) – When her mothers and others ask her “Through which means will all these changes, which have happened in you due to separation from him, get overcome?” she says that since these will be overcome only if she dons his divine thuLasi garland, she tells them to leave her in the place where his victorious garland has been placed.

Word-by-Word Meanings

vaNNam thirivum – the difference in the complexion of (my) form
manam kuzhaivum – tiredness in mind
mAnam ilAmaiyum – being without shame
vAy veLuppum – mouth having become pale
uNNal uRAmaiyum – not desiring food
|uL melivum – knowledge having got shrunk, all these

Odham nIr vaNNan enbAn oruvan – kaNNapirAn, who is unique, and famous for being with the complexion of the ocean, his
thaN am thuzhAy ennum mAlai koNdu sUtta – if the cool, beautiful, divine thuLasi garland is donned
thaNiyum – will get removed

baladhEvan – balarAman [elder brother of kaNNan]
pilamban thannai – the monster pralambAsuran
paN azhiya – such that the joints of his bones were deformed
venRu – the place where he was destroyed

ennai uyththidumin – carry me and leave me

Simple Translation

All the changes which I have undergone, such as losing my complexion, becoming tired in my mind, being without a sense of shame and being pale in my mouth, will get removed only if I wear the divine, beautiful, cool thuLasi garland worn by kaNNapirAn, who has the dark complexion of the ocean and who is unique. Since you cannot get that divine thuLasi garland here, carry me to the banyan tree, called as pANdIram, where balarAman destroyed the monster pralambAsuran in such a way that the monster’s bones were deformed.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

vaNNam thirivum – becoming pale in complexion due to separation.

manam kuzhaivum – the tiredness of heart, which normally doesn’t get tired because it has got something or it has lost something.

mAnam ilAmaiyum – losing shame which is part of the primary qualities of ladies, achcham (fear), madam (simplicity), nANam (shyness) and payirppu (modesty) which will normally never be lost, irrespective of whatever may happen.

vAy veLuppum – just as she had said in nAchchiyAr thirumozhi 1-8vAyppuRam veLuththu” (her lips, which are always reddish due to chewing betel leaves constantly, have now become pale since she has stopped using such materials of enjoyment, in separation)

uNNal uRAmaiyum – Since kaNNan is the food that she takes, the water that she drinks and the betel leaves which she enjoys, she is unable to sustain herself in separation from him. Since she is not able to eat anything, her physical form has become weak. 

uL melivum – Shrinking of knowledge, which is the reason for all these effects. The term uL refers to knowledge.

Odha nIr vaNNan enbAn oruvan – the divine physical form [of emperumAn’s] which is the reason for all these changes in her. Just as the ocean invigorates those which see it, his physical form too removes the ennui of his followers.

oruvan – he is more eminent than all the others. [He is unique]

thaN am thuzhAy ennum mAlai koNdu sUttath thaNiyum – just as he is more distinguished than all the others, this divine thuLasi garland too is more distinguished than the rest. If that garland, which has connection with his divine form, is applied on me, all these changes will get negated.

pilamban thannaip paNNazhiyap paladhEvan venRa pANdi vadaththu ennai uyththidumin – carry me to the place near that banyan tree, where kaNNapirAn’s elder brother, balarAman, had destroyed the monster pralambAsuran such that his bone joints got disfigured completely, and where his victorious garland is still present, with which my changes will get reversed. Is it apt to call the victorious garland of balarAman’s as kaNNapirAn’s? When iLaiya perumAL (lakshmaNa) killed indhrajith [son of rAvaNa], just as that victory was termed as SrI rAma’s, here too, there is no shortcoming in terming the victory of balarAman’s as kaNNapirAn’s.

pANdivadam – when they were grazing calves under this banyan tree, balarAman killed the monster pralambAsuran who came there to kill them.

venRa pANdivadaththu ennai uyththidumin – when he coronates himself for his valour and his victory, since I too should be there so that I too could don those victorious garlands, carry me to that place and leave me there.

Next, we will consider 8th pAsuram of this decad.
