Just as it has been mentioned in SrI vishNu purANam 1.19.144 “rAgathvE’bavath sIthA” (when SrI rAma incarnated as SrI rAma, SrI mahAlakshmi incarnated as sIthAp pirAtti), pirAtti incarnates aligning herself with emperumAn’s incarnation. When pirAtti incarnated as sIthAp pirAtti, in order for the chEthanas [souls with knowledge] to know her qualities of krupA, pArathanthryam and ananyArha SEshathvam [compassion, complete dependence on emperumAn and exclusively existing for emperumAn, respectively] which are essential, auspicious qualities for her role of purushakAara bhUthai [one, who recommends chEthanas to emperumAn], so that they will have full faith in her and attain her [prior to attaining emperumAn], she decided in her divine mind “Let us manifest [these qualities] through our conduct”. Among these three auspicious qualities, in order to manifest the first quality of compassion, using the pretext of “Even as she was mercifully residing in dhaNdakAraNyam, rAvaNa separated her [from SrI rAma]” she mercifully entered lankA. perumAL, in line with his conduct as a human being, as mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 120-11 “AthmAnam mAnusham manyE” (I consider myself as a human being), did not know her whereabouts.

Along with his divine brother [lakshmaNa], he wandered in various places, searching for her. When they reached the banks of lake pampA, on the order of mahArAjar [sugrIva], hanuman disguised himself as an ascetic and met them. SrI rAma formed a bonding with hanuman. After hanuman led them to mahArAjar, SrI rAma came to know of sugrIvan’s loss of kingdom and wife, and the reason for his hiding. He became friends with sugrIvan; subsequently, he killed sugrIvan’s enemy, vAli, united sugrIvan with his land and wife, and made sugrIvan as the king of monkeys. After allowing sugrIvan to return to kishkindhA, SrI rAma, along with his divine brother, lakshmaNa, went to mAlyavAn mountain, to spend the four moths during monsoon. sugrIvan, who had gone to his capital town, forgot about the help rendered by perumAL and his solitude, enjoyed the pleasures of his kingdom and wife. Even after the monsoon period ended, since sugrIvan did not come, SrI rAma became sad, as mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam kishkindhA kANdam 30.3 “kAmavruththancha sugrIvam nashtAncha janakAthmajam l budhvA kAlam athItham cha mumOha paramAthura:” (upon realising that sugrIva was engrossed in lust, that sIthAp pirAtti, the daughter of king janaka, was lost to him, and that much time has elapsed without any progress, SrI rAma was sorrowful and swooned). He looked at iLaiya perumAL and told him “Even if you have to create a fire, get sugrIva maharAjar here”. lakshmaNa entered the main entrance of kishkindhA and drew his bow to make a sharp, vibrating sound. Hearing that sound, sugrIvan trembled, tore off the garland which he was wearing on his neck, indulged in a few activities which were typical of monkeys, looked at hanuman, who was near him and asked him “At this stage, what should I do?” hanuman counselled him, as mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam kishkindhA kANdam 32.17 “kruthAparAdhasya hi thE nAnyath paSchAmyaham kshamam l antharENa anjalim badhvA lakshmaNasya prasAdhanAth” (For you, having committed a blunder, other than cupping your palms as anjali to lakshmaNa and making him happy, I do not see any appropriate remedial action), that “During the time of committing a mistake, if we regret and come out of that mistake and carry out simple tasks, it would be acceptable. However, after committing the blunder and after time has passed, other than carrying out an anjali [putting the palms together, in salutation], there is nothing else to be done”. Even then, sugrIvan was scared to face lakshmaNa. He told his wife thArA, to go and pacify lakshmaNa’s anger. thArA went to lakshmaNa, with a wadding gait, as mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam kishkindhA kANdam 33.17 “sApraskhalanthee” (She walked with a swaying gait), spoke a few words, tempering the anger in iLaiya perumAL’s divine mind. maharAjar then came to iLaiya perumAL, tendering his apology for the delay and asking him to show compassion towards him. He went along with iLaiya perumAL and paid his respects to perumAL. He then gathered all his army chiefs and told them to look for sIthAp pirAtti in all directions, as said in SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 30.3 “yAm kapInAm sahasrANi subahUnyayuthAni cha l dhikshu sarvAsu mArganthE …” (that pirAtti, who was searched by thousands and ten thousands of monkeys in all directions, was seen by me). Among the monkeys who went in the southern direction, to look for sIthAp pirAtti, were prominent entities such as angadhap perumAL [son of vAli and the crown prince of kishkindhA], jAmbhavAn [a bear, full of wisdom], mahArAjar [sugrIvan had included himself in this, but stayed back, later] and thiruvadi [hanuman]. perumAL deciding in his divine mind “Apart from thiruvadi, this task cannot be completed by anyone”, shared with thiruvadi a few incidents, which will make sIthAp pirAtti to believe in him, as SrI rAma’s messenger. perumAL also gave thiruvadi his divine ring, as further proof.

All the monkeys travelled in the southern direction. Not finding pirAtti anywhere, they became sorrowful. They wanted to end their lives [since they did not wish to return to kishkindhA, and meet perumAL without any information] through fasting. Through the words of sampAthi “I could see sIthAp pirAtti inside the capital of rAvaNa’s kingdom inside the ocean”, they became joyous. They decided that thiruvadi was the most apt person to go from this side and meet her. thiruvadi too crossed the ocean, reached the kingdom of rAvaNa, took the form of a little cat and went to all the places, ending with the private quarters of rAvaNa. Not seeing her anywhere, he found some movement in aSOkavanam. He went there, and as mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 15.24 “priya janam apaSyanthIm paSyanthIm rAkshasIm gaNam l sva gaNEna mrugImhInAm SvaNair avruthAm iva” (sIthAp pirAtti did not see any of her own people whom she desired and saw only the women demons, just like a doe surrounded by a pack of dogs), he saw pirAtti, in a pitiable state, surrounded by seven hundred women-demons with grotesque forms. Ascertaining through various reasoning that she, indeed, is pirAtti, hanuman hid himself on a SimSupA tree, wishing to know the happenings in that place.

At that time, rAvaNa came to the proximity of pirAtti and babbled a few words. pirAtti did not even look at rAvaNa, treating him with contempt, and told him a few words. When he left, rAvaNa told the women demons “Harm her in such a cruel manner that, out of fear, she comes to our side”. They also started harming her, both through their speech and their actions, such that it could be said that they had never harmed anyone in their lives before, in that manner. sIthAp pirAtti thought “We cannot live any further. We have to end our life”. Feeling very sad, she waited for the women demons to go to sleep. Then, she approached a branch of the SimSupA tree, and wanted to kill herself, by hanging from the branch, through her locks.

thiruvadi, [looking at all these] decided “We should not keep quiet anymore. We have to protect her”. Just as it has been mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 31.1 “Evam bahuvidhAm chinthAm chinthayithvA mahA kapi: l samSravE madhuram vAkyam vaidhEhyA vyAjahAraha” (Reflecting on many kinds of thoughts, hanuman spoke sweet words, within hearing distance of sIthAp pirAtti), he started recounting the auspicious qualities and activities of SrI rAma, which are sweet to hear even as the words fell on one’s ears. sIthAp pirAtti, on hearing thiruvadi’s words, started looking around the SimSupA tree, wondering as to wherefrom these words, which she hadn’t heard in a long time, are coming. She saw thiruvadi, sitting on top of the tree, and was wondering as to what this could be. After some time, she came back to her senses and was wondering again, as mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam sundhara kANdam 34.1 “kim nu syAch chiththa mOhO ayam” (Is it a delusion of my mind?) As she was thinking this way, hanuman came before her, with his hands in anjali [closing the palms together, in salutation] and spoke a few words. She became frightened, thinking that he is rAvaNa0 and told him “You should not harm me like this”, manifesting her powerless state.

In order to remove her doubts about him, thiruvadi said the words which SrI rAma had mercifully told him to make her believe him. He announced that he is “SrI rAma’s messenger” and presented the divine ring which SrI rAma had given him. periyAzhwAr dwells on the happy state of mind of pirAtti on seeing the divine ring. He recalls the words of hanuman to her and with the excessive affection that this created in him, he enjoys those words in this thirumozhi.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says the following:

In the earlier thirumozhi, AzhwAr had expressed about mumukshu [one, who is desirous of attaining mOksham, Sri vaikuNtam], who is more eminent than nithyasUris, as mentioned in thiruviruththam 79 “viNNuLArilum sIriyarE” [those who worship emperumAn are more eminent than nithyasUris), and who takes many forms to worship and carry servitude to emperumAn as said in the verse anEkadhAbhavathi [taking many forms] by way of making himself into two forms and worshipping emperumAn, through the narrative of two girls in thiruvAyppAdi, singing about two divine incarnations of emperumAn “nandhan madhalaiyaik kAguththanai” while playing undhi paRaththal.

In this thirumozhi, through the pretext of thiruvadi [hanuman] going as a messenger [to sIthAp pirAtti], removing her doubt and handing over emperumAn’s divine ring to her, AzhwAr mercifully explains as to how emperumAn takes efforts to bring about that mumukshuthvam (the quality of being a mumukshus, one who is desirous of going to SrI vaikuNtam).

How does emperumAn accept a jIvAthmA [how does he make a jIvAthmA to become a mumukshu]? It is not through the path of different types of agyAtha sukrutham [good deeds which emperumAn mercifully loads on to us] unknown to the jIvAthmA, which emperumAn credits the jIvAthmA with. It is not through the path of carrying out atonement for sinful deeds carried out and by experiencing the result of deeds, of both vice and virtuous types. It is not through the path of giving up all the other activities which are considered as upAyams [means to attain emperumAn] and accepting the divine feet of emperumAn as the upAyam [as mentioned in charama SlOkam, in bhagavath gIthA 18.66 ‘sarva dharmAn parithyajya mAm Ekam SaraNam vraja’], as mentioned in mUnRAm thiruvandhAdhi 14 “mARpAl manam suzhippa mangaiyar thOL kaivittu” (as one’s heart engages with emperumAn, the desire to embrace the shoulders of women will get removed). It is only carried out through an AchAryan, when a disciple, who has achieved Sama dhama etc [control over mind and external organs of senses], approaches an AchAryan, who removes his doubts through his [AchAryan’s] knowledge and conduct of activities [mentioned in SAsthrams], and instructing thirumanthram [first of the three esoteric manthrams in our sampradhAyam], which is the subject for this knowledge and activities [In thirumanthram, AchAryan instructs about the relationship between jIvAthmA and paramAthmA (supreme entity, emperumAn) through the first and prominent word of praNavam [that the jIvAthmA is SEshabhUthan (servitor) to paramAthmA; that the jIvAthmA exists exclusively for paramAthmA, through the second term, nama: and that jIvAthmA has to carry out servitude to paramAthmA, through the third term , nArAyaNAya]. Through these instructions, the AchAryan takes the disciple under his refuge. Even if there is a temporary separation [between the AchAryan and the disciple] owing to certain activities, due to the humility of the AchAryan and the splendour of the meaning of thirumanthram, the AchAryan will take the disciple under his refuge, again. It is this which is explained through thiruvadi. While sIthAp pirAtti always has the qualities of Samam and dhamam (control over internal and external organs of senses), with the separation from emperumAn taking place in order to fulfil the word given to celestial entities [for killing rAvaNa et al], SrI rAma had sent hanuman as his messenger to her. sIthAp pirAtti has a doubt in her divine mind, as to how a relationship happened between humans and monkeys. thiruvadi tells her that the synchronisation of hearts between SrI rAma and mahArAjar took place on account of sIthAp pirAtti herself [when rAvaNa abducted sIthAp pirAtti from panchavati, she threw all her jewels, in a bag, which fell near sugrIva et al. This was her blessing for the relationship to happen between SrI rAma and sugrIva]. While iLaiya perumAL is there with SrI rAma, why didn’t SrI rAma send him to sIthAp pirAtti as his messenger? The [harsh] words spoken by sIthAp pirAtti to lakshmaNa are still ringing in SrI rAma’s divine mind and hence, he decided to send thiruvadi to her. This was the unified idea of both SrI rAma and sugrIva. thiruvadi says that he is not aware of a reason for this. Finally, sIthAp pirAtti was firm that thiruvadi has no connection with the demons; she accepted the divine ring, belonging to SrI rAma, given by hanuman and thought of its place on the divine finger of SrI rAma. This is how thiruvadi removed her doubt. Whosoever it may be, it is always the AchAryan who mercifully gives the clarification, and it is always the disciple, who gets the clarification. Even SrI rAma is a disciple of sages such as vasishta et al.

pAsuram 3.10.1 – neRindha karum

pAsuram 3.10.2 – alliyam pUmalar

pAsuram 3.10.3 – kalakkiya mAmannathanaL

pAsuram 3.10.4 – vAr aNindha

pAsuram 3.10.5 – mAn amaraum

pAsuram 3.10.6 – chiththirak kUdaththu

pAsuram 3.10.7 – min oththa

pAsuram 3.10.8 – maiththagu mAmalar

pAsuram 3.10.9 – dhikku niRai

pAsuram 3.10.10 – vArArum mulai

We shall next consider the 1st pAsuram of this thirumozhi.

adiyEn krishNa rAmAnuja dhAsan

archived in https://divyaprabandham.koyil.org

pramEyam (goal) – http://koyil.org
pramANam (scriptures) – http://granthams.koyil.org
pramAthA (preceptors) – http://acharyas.koyil.org
SrIvaishNava education/kids portal – http://pillai.koyil.org

SrI: SrImathE SatakOpAya nama: SrImathE rAmAnujAya nama: Sri varavaramunayE nama: periyAzhwAr thirumozhi >> Third Centum Previous pravESam In the earlier thirumozhi (divine verses), AzhwAr had enjoyed the auspicious qualities and activities of SrI rAmAvathAram.
