Now, he has a desire to enjoy qualities and activities of krishNAvathAram as well as the preceding one, SrI rAmAvathAram, simultaneously. To achieve that, he takes the pathos of two herd-girls, with one of them engaging in the auspicious qualities and activities of SrI rAmAvathAram and the other, engaging in the auspicious qualities and activities of krishNAvathAram. The two girls keep extolling the auspicious qualities and activities of each incarnation, opposing each other, in the style of undhipaRaththal [a literary game, in which two or more persons sing songs, extolling virtues of their chosen entity, in a competition]. Thus, periyAzhwAr sings the auspicious qualities and activities of both incarnations, and becomes pleased, in this thirumozhi. Is it possible to attain the pathos of two herd-girls at the same time? If emperumAn’s mercy is there, due to that distinguishing feature, without any hurdle in knowledge, this is possible. In the periya thirumozhi padhigam 11.5 “mAnamarum mennOkki”, two girls were indulging in a similar vein. nanjIyar, one of our preceptors, asked his AchAryan “How is it possible to attain the pathos of two pirAttimArs [consorts] simultaneously?” bhattar famously responded, saying “In SrI vaikuNtam, a mukthAthmA [one liberated from samsAram and who has attained emperumAn] takes many forms simultaneously and carries out kainkaryam. If emperumAn showers his mercy here too, it is possible”.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says the following: In the earlier thirumozhi, AzhwAr spoke about krishNAvathAram in several instances, and the way a disciple of an AchAryan, who is totally dependent on the AchAryan, attained emperumAn [and carried out servitude]. AzhwAr meditated on both the eminent and the affable qualities of krishNAvathAram. AzhwAr splits himself into two entities, taking on the pathos of two herd-girls in thiruvAyppAdi, with one speaking about the greatness of SrI rAmAvathAram and the other, of krishNAvathAram, in which the former has qualities of both eminence and affability while the latter has only the qualities of affability. He becomes happy, meditating on both, carrying out mangaLASAsanam for both the incarnations. Both kinds of qualities [eminent and affable] are full of auspiciousness only. Is it possible for a jIvAthmA to take up two forms simultaneously? thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that in SrI vaikuNtam, as mentioned in chAndhOgya upanishadh, “anEkadhAbhavathi” takes place [one takes many forms]. When nammAzhwAr says of distinguished people in samsAram, as in thiruviruththam 79 “viNNuLArilum sIriyar” (those, in samsAram, who worship emperumAn are more eminent than nithyasUris), this also could happen. In the thiruchchAzhal padhigam, periya thirumozhi 11.5, when two girls were playing undhipaRaththal, nanjIyar asked his AchAryan, parASara bhattar “Is it possible to take the pathos of two pirAttis simultaneously?” bhattar responded, saying “Have you not heard of anEkadhAbhavathi in SrI vaikuNtam?” This has been quoted by AchchAn piLLai.

pAsuram 3.9.1 – ennAdhan dhEvikku

pAsuram 3.9.2 – en vil

pAsuram 3.9.3 – uruppiNi nangai

pAsuram 3.9.4 – mARRuth thAy

pAsuram 3.9.5 – panjavar thUdhanAy

pAsuram 3.9.6 – mudi onRi

pAsuram 3.9.7 – kALiyan poygai

pAsuram 3.9.8 – thArkku iLa

pAsuram 3.9.9 – mAyach chagadam

pAsuram 3.9.10 – kArAr kadalai

pAsuram 3.9.11 – nandhan madalai

We shall next consider the 1st pAsuram of this thirumozhi.

adiyEn krishNa rAmAnuja dhAsan

archived in https://divyaprabandham.koyil.org

pramEyam (goal) – http://koyil.org
pramANam (scriptures) – http://granthams.koyil.org
pramAthA (preceptors) – http://acharyas.koyil.org
SrIvaishNava education/kids portal – http://pillai.koyil.org

SrI: SrImathE SatakOpAya nama: SrImathE rAmAnujAya nama: Sri varavaramunayE nama: periyAzhwAr thirumozhi >> Third Centum Previous pravESam Having overflowing affection towards krishNAvathAram [incarnation as krishNa], periyAzhwAr enjoyed krishNa’s auspicious qualities and activities, in the earlier thirumozhi.
