What sin have I committed (says she, in disgust)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Simple Translation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women in thiruvAyppAdi have beautiful, dark locks. krishNa would carry out many mischiefs such that the women would come running helter-skelter, with their dresses and locks in a dishevelled manner and calumniate against him. Instead of roaming around the village, indulging in such mischiefs, I allowed him, who is enjoyable for the eyes and who is beyond one\u2019s thoughts, to go behind calves, in the forest path. How sad! What sin have I committed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>vaNNam \u2026<\/strong> &#8211; <em>vaNNam<\/em> \u2013 beautiful. Women, who were having beautiful, dark locks, came running with their dresses and locks dishevelled and blamed krishNa for his mischiefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that this verse refers to women who had decorated their locks with different types of ornaments made of gems. <em>vaNNam<\/em> \u2013 being colourful, typical of the clan of herd-women. <em>vandhu alar thURRida<\/em> \u2013 If children, in their own houses, indulge in mischiefs, they [the women] would scold them and quieten after that. If women from other houses come to their houses, they will tell these women about the mischiefs carried out by their children and leave it at that. However, when krishNa indulges in mistakes, they will tell one another about his mistakes. Further, krishNa has indulged in such mischiefs that they will come to where I am [reference to yaSOdhAp pirAtti] and read out a litany of faults on him. However, making it difficult for me to tell them \u201cIs he capable of indulging in all those?\u201d and making it impossible for them to complete complaining about him, instead of allowing him to roam around the village, indulging in many mistakes, I have become the unfortunate one in not seeing all these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>pala seydhu ip pAdi engum thiriyAmE<\/strong> \u2013 his mischiefs have been mentioned as \u201cmany\u201d hinting that it was beyond one\u2019s capability to count. He was roaming around the village, after indulging in his mischiefs. It appears that yaSOdhAp pirAtti enjoyed his mischiefs and their [the affected herd-girls] running in and blaming him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>kaNNukku iniyAnai<\/strong> \u2013 Though they were hurt by his mischiefs, his divine form was such enjoyable that people would look at him, without turning their attention away from him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that \u201c<em>manaththukku iniyAnai<\/em>\u201d (being dear to the heart) comes later. First, he is dear to the eyes, with his divine form like dark cloud, and as mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNa SlOkam \u201c<em>dhrishti chiththApahAriNam<\/em>\u201d (SrI rAma steals the eyes and hearts of those who behold him). Medicines such as <em>iLanIr kuzhambu<\/em> [a herbal medicine, applied to eyes to clear the vision] would have his divine complexion. Since heart follows the path of eyes, his faults would appear like auspicious qualities, just as mentioned in the verse \u201c<em>dhOshA guNA<\/em>:\u201d (faults are auspicious qualities).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>eNNaRku ariyAnai<\/strong> \u2013 He is beyond even the thoughts of those who wish to attain him through their efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>kAnadhar idaik kanRin pin pOkkinEn<\/strong> \u2013 I allowed one, who is difficult to attain, to go behind calves, to the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that krishNa had to go behind calves on single track paths inside forest, treading on his most tender, divine feet.\u00a0 <em>eNNaRku ariyAnaip pOkkinEn<\/em>&#8211; There are people who think that by taking efforts on their own, those efforts will enable them to attain emperumAn, instead of attaining him through his mercy. However, krishNa will not be approachable for those who think that way.
