Comb the locks of such kaNNan<br><em>kAr mugil<\/em> \u2013 like bluish cloud<br><em>vaNNan<\/em> \u2013 oh, crow! Comb the locks of one who has the form of such cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Simple Translation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>kaNNan would swallow butter which has been kept safely inside a robust vessel and kept in <em>uRi<\/em> and lie down immediately as if he were sleeping. Oh, crow! Come and comb the divine locks of that kaNNan who is the lord of all, the lord of nithyasUris as well belonging to the herd-people. Oh, crow! Comb the divine locks of kaNNan who has the form of a bluish cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>thiNNak kalaththu<\/strong> \u2013 in a sturdy vessel. Even if one were to repeatedly keep hitting the vessel with sticks, the vessel will not break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>thirai uRi mEl vaiththa<\/strong> \u2013 keeping the vessel on top, in a large <em>uRi<\/em>. <em>thirai uRi<\/em> \u2013 huge <em>uRi<\/em>, made with thick ropes which have been intertwined well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that the ropes have been intertwined such that none can even move it. Even the person who had strung the ropes would not be able to undo them. Alternatively, using many ropes and using them to create a dense structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>veNNey vizhungi<\/strong> \u2013 swallowing butter, which has been safely kept [inside that <em>uRi<\/em>], without disturbing the marks made on the ropes, making one to wonder \u201cWas the butter taken away by any deity?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that since the vessel has not been disturbed when the butter kept inside it has been found missing, it would appear that in his stress to eat the butter fast, before anyone could see him, butter has got spilt and spread out. This would make those who had seen it to surmise that he had swallowed the butter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>viraiyan uRangidum<\/strong> \u2013 running hurriedly, before those who had kept the butter safely in that manner could see him, and sleeping as if he did not know anything which had happened. Is it possible to sleep when one runs in hurriedly, under stress, more than the stress experienced while swallowing the butter? He will see, with half-opened eyes, shadows of people moving here and there in such a manner that those who see him will accost him, saying \u201cWhat sort of a pretending sleep is this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>aNNal<\/strong> \u2013 lord. He would make the favourable entities, who hear about this narrative of stealing and eating butter, to give in writing that they are his servitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the term <em>aNNal<\/em> refers to kaNNan being the lord of the divine clan of herd-people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>amarar perumAnai<\/strong> \u2013 the lord of nithyasUris who have no bewilderment at all. This is the upper limit for his eminence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that kaNNan is the controller of nithyasUris. Controlling them refers to his quality of mingling with them and experiencing together with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ayar tham kaNNanai<\/strong> \u2013 this speaks about his quality of simplicity, which is the exact opposite of the eminence mentioned earlier. He is the controller of herd-people who do not know the distinction between left hand and right hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that he is the protector of herd-people. He is one who is easy to approach. He is one who is the object of their vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>kaNNan<\/strong> \u2013 this could also be considered as being their (herd-people&#8217;s) eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>kArmugil vaNNan<\/strong> \u2013 He has the form of a cloud which is about to pour down rain [that dark]. This implies that his form is such that it would remove the ennui of beholders. Oh, crow!
