You are having a girdle of tinkling bells, made of carbuncle, over it. Even as it makes a noise, and you smile desirously such that the divine pearls [teeth] inside your divine mouth, which is like coral, shine, you should clap your hands, with which you had earlier taken earth from mahAbali, symbolically through water. Oh, little child, who has dark locks! You should clap your hands.

vyAkhyAnam (Commentary)

mANikkam … – On top of the cord, made of faultless pure gold, worn on the divine waist, is a girdle, with its carbuncle bells tinkling. In the verse “Ay pon udai maNi”, the term Ay refers to being visible, and without any fault. Since ANip ponnAl seydha has been said first, where the term pon has been taken to mean gold, the term pon [in the verse Ay pon udai maNi] is taken to refer to beauty. Will a carbuncle tinkling bell make a noise? If the clapper [bell’s tongue] is made of carbuncle and the bell, outside, is also made of carbuncle, it will not make a noise. However, if the clapper is made of carbuncle and the outside bell is made of gold or any other metal, it will make a noise.

pENi … – instead of clapping due to my compulsion, you should clap with your desire, with your divine mouth, which is like coral, and the divine pearls, whose colours complement each other, shining. Alternatively, the term pENi would also refer to protection. krishNa should protect his divine form, such that it does not become tired.

paNdu … – At a previous point of time. Just as it has been said in periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 4-3-9 “kudam kaiyil maN koNdu” (taking the land in your divine, cupped hands [through water, symbolically]), with the divine hands with which you had taken water as a symbol of having been granted three steps of land when you had gone to mahAbali. This conveys the meaning – for the sake of your followers, without considering your eminence, you are willing to transform your divine form and carry out their task.

chappANi – you should clap.

thiruvAimozhip piLLai, in his svApadhESam, says that the action chappANi highlights performing anjali [cupping the hands together, in salutation]. He says further that since AzhwAr is asking for performing chappANi twice, he is highlighting, through krishNa, that we should have nothing in our hands while considering emperumAn as both upAyam (means to attain emperumAn) and as upEyam (carrying out servitude to emperumAn, after attaining him). The reason for saying kANi is that while many say proudly, while referring to their land etc as “This is mine” and gift that to others too, the term says that this earth [samsAram] is his. It is this that he had to take through alms.

karum kuzhal … – Oh, one who has dark locks and childishness!
