During avAnthara praLayam [deluge during which only the first three worlds are destroyed], emperumAn protects these three worlds by keeping them in his stomach. Oh, one who has a beautiful, divine stomach where you keep the AthmAs and protect them, such that they do not get destroyed! thiruvAimozhip piLLai says, in his svApadhESam, that jIvAthmAs were in the state as mentioned in thaiththirIya upanishath SeekshAvalli “asannEva sa bhavathi” (like achith, without knowledge). In order to enable them to indulge in either enjoying worldly pleasures or to seek liberation from samsAram and to attain SrI vaikuNtam, when the worlds were created, they [AthmAs] started indulging in excessive offences. While they were fit to be destroyed, instead of that, since emperumAn kept them safely in his divine stomach, AzhwAr says mercifully “uyya ulagu padaiththu uNda maNi vayiRA”.

Uzhi thOR … – Oh, the most supreme entity, who lies down on a tender banyan leaf, after protecting all the worlds in your divine stomach, during every kalpam [one day of brahmA, when avAnthara praLayam sets in] and engages in yOga nidhra [reclining, thinking of how to uplift all the jIvAthmAs]. thiruvAimozhip piLLai says here that the term Uzhi thOr Uzhi reflects the fact that many kalpams pass in this status. Instead of mentioning only Alilai [banyan leaf], since AzhwAr has qualified that with adhan mEl, this refers to the tenderness of the banyan leaf. The term paiya [slowly] denotes that he was mercifully reclining on the tender banyan leaf, which was just then sprouting, meditating on how to protect and uplift the AthmAs, such that the banyan leaf did not even move. This itself indicates his supremacy.

pangayam … – symbolic of that supremacy, oh, one who has divine eyes which are like a blossomed lotus, but much longer than the lotus, and who has a dark form to complement the colour of the divine eyes! Unlike people who make an issue of carrying an object [on their heads or back] and keep saying “sem sem” [a sound made] to indicate that they are carrying excessive weight, emperumAn is carrying his beloved one, without any effort.
