Bring the <em>vanamAlai<\/em> [divine garland worn by emperumAn] which he is wearing on his divine chest and roll it on my bosom such that my heart cools down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>kanjaik kAyndha karuvilli kadaikkaN ennum siRaikkOlAl<\/em><br><em>nenju Uduruva vEvuNdu nilaiyum thaLarndhu naivEnai<\/em><br><em>anjEl ennAn avan oruvan avan mArvil aNindha vanamAlai<\/em><br><em>vanjiyAdhE tharumAgil mArvil koNarndhu purattIrE<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Word-by-Word Meanings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>kanjai<\/em> \u2013 kamsan<br><em>kAyndhu<\/em> \u2013 one who destroyed him<br><em>karuvilli<\/em> \u2013 kaNNapirAn who has eyebrows, resembling a huge bow<br><em>kadaikkaN ennum<\/em> \u2013 called as glance<br><em>siRaik kOlAl<\/em> \u2013 arrow which has wings<br><em>nenju Uduruva<\/em> \u2013 throughout the heart<br>(<em>E<\/em>)<em>vEvuNdu <\/em>\u2013 getting singed (after being shot at)<br><em>nilaiyum thaLarndhu<\/em> \u2013 becoming ruined<br><em>naivEnai<\/em> \u2013 looking at me, who is suffering<br><em>anjEl ennAn avan oruvan<\/em> \u2013 not mentioning a word \u201cDo not be afraid\u201d, belonging to another species<br><em>avan<\/em> \u2013 that emperumAn<br><em>mArvu aNindha<\/em> \u2013 donned on his divine chest<br><em>vanamAlai<\/em> \u2013 divine garland<br><em>vanjiyAdhE<\/em> \u2013 without deceit<br><em>tharum Agil<\/em> \u2013 if he were to give mercifully<br><em>koNarndhu<\/em> \u2013 bringing (that garland)<br><em>mArvil <\/em>\u2013 on (my) chest<br><em>purattIr<\/em> \u2013 roll it (such that the heat disappears)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Simple Translation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am suffering after being shot at my heart fully, by the winged arrow of the glance of kaNNapirAn, who has eyebrows looking like a huge bow and who destroyed kamsan. My heart has become singed and I feel like I am ruined. He did not mention even a word \u201cDo not be afraid\u201d. If he were to give his <em>vanamAlai<\/em>, which he has donned on his chest, bring it and roll it on my chest such that the heat disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>vyAkyAnam (Commentary)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>kanjaik kAyndha<\/strong> \u2013 kamsan had organised a festival of bows and invited kaNNa pirAn to it. He had planned to kill kaNNan through his royal elephant, kuvalayApeedam, wrestlers such as chANura and mushtika and in case kaNNan were destroyed, he wanted to cry in deceit that \u201cBy mistake they have killed my nephew!\u201d. However, kaNNan killed him such that he perished along with his thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>karuvilli<\/strong> \u2013 a man with a huge bow. Since he had come for taking part in the festival of bows, she is describing him this way. Alternatively, this can be construed as one who has eyebrows like a huge bow in order to torment women like me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>kadaikkaN ennum<\/strong> \u2013 those who are in love, will look at others, straight into their eyes. They will glance at only those with whom they are in love. This is similar to the owner of an orchard, who glances at his orchard with pride. Is it not said famously \u201c<em>thAdhruSya<\/em>:<em> kalu mukthakaNtamaparAn paSyanthi na svIkruthAn<\/em>\u201d (noble women will look at others with a straight look; they do not look at their husbands like that (they will only glance at them))?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>karuvilli kadaikkaN ennum siRaik kOlAl<\/strong> \u2013 don\u2019t poets describe eyebrows as bows and eyes as arrows!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>siRaikkOlAl<\/strong> \u2013 arrow, which is like a stick, having wings. <em>kazhisiRai<\/em> (which has meanings of arrow as well as a wicked person) will not be visible when it comes. Only upon seeing the targeted persons falling, would one know of its presence. It [the arrow] could be prevented if seen. However, since it is shot, unseen, it is not possible to prevent it from reaching its target. If kaNNapirAn were to look at her in a straightforward way, she could avoid by not being the target. Since he is glancing at her, it is not possible to go outside his vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>nenju Uduruva vEvuNdu<\/strong> \u2013 this could be separated as either <em>nenju Uduruva EvuNdu<\/em> or as <em>nenju Uduruva vEvuNdu<\/em>. The term <em>EvuNdu<\/em> would be appropriate for saying [that his glance is like an] arrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EvuNdu nilaiyum thaLarndhu<\/strong> \u2013 what is the effect of being struck by the arrow? Instead of falling down after four feet, she fell at the same place. This reflects on her strength and the power of his glance. There are various types of <em>upAsakars<\/em> (those who attempt to attain emperumAn through the path of devotion, on their own efforts) \u2013 those who are firmly rooted in the path of <em>sadhvidhyA<\/em> or those who are firmly rooted in the path of <em>dhahara vidhyA<\/em> etc. In that classification, these people [who are like kaNNa pirAn who win over their targets through their glance] could be termed as <em>nOkku vidhyA nishtar<\/em> [those who are firmly rooted in the path of glance].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>naivEnai<\/strong> \u2013 me, who has had her bones and joints in a state of debilitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>anjEl ennAn<\/strong> \u2013 if he knew the cruelty of his arrow having pierced me, should he not have come running and embraced me saying \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>avan oruvan<\/strong> \u2013 unable to bear the suffering of vAli, having fallen down after being pierced by his arrow, SrI rAmapirAn shed tears, as mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam kishkindhA kANdam 24-24 \u201c<em>ithyEvam arthasya raghupravIra<\/em>:<em> SruthvA vachO vAlyanujasya thasya<\/em> l<em> sanjAthabhAshpa<\/em>:<em> paravIrahanthA rAmO muhUrtham vimanA babhUva<\/em> ll\u201d (Hearing the words of sugrIva, the brother of vAli and who was very much in distress, SrI rAma, who annihilates warriors who are his enemies, shed tears and was bewildered in his mind for a <em>muhUrtham<\/em> (about 48 minutes)). That SrI rAman, who was an ocean of compassion, was a person; this kaNNan, who becomes happy after seeing those who have been targeted by his glance tremble in distress, is also a person!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>avan mArvaNindha vanamAlai<\/strong> \u2013 it is not some garland which would satiate her. Her desire is to get the garland which he donned with desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>vanjiyAdhE tharum Agil<\/strong> \u2013 after you go and inform him of my condition, if he would give that [divine garland] without deceiving you just as he deceived me through his smile and glance; the meaning hinted is that if he would not torment you similar to the way in which he tormented me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>mArvil koNarndhu purattIrE<\/strong> \u2013 roll the divine garland which he had donned on his divine chest, on my chest which is throbbing after having been pierced by his glance. Is it not on the spot of injury that the medicine has to be applied!
