Through your lowly speech and actions, you are making us, who are weak, to become infatuated with you. Is your face similar to a magic powder [which when applied on people, will make them become stupefied]? We are not saying anything to you, out of fear that others will call us as lowly people. Oh, one who has divine eyes like a reddish lotus flower! Do not come here and destroy our toy-houses.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

peyyu mA mugil pOl vaNNa – the way you have donned divine ornaments on your dark divine form, which is invigorating, and wandering in front of young girls, is like a dark cloud, which is pouring rain, which is also accompanied with lightning and carrying the bow of indhran [the lord of celestial entities]. kaNNan, after hearing from then that they have lost out to his divine form, started saying words like “adiyEn, kudiyEn” [these words imply that he is lowering himself in their presence to the level of a servitor to them], and biting his fingers [indicating that he is feeling shy]. Getting involved with those words and actions, becoming infatuated with him, they further tell him ….

unRan pEchchum …… mAyamandhiram thAn kolO – your words and deeds, which indicate lowliness, blunt our intelligence. The child will follow the kidnapper, saying mAmA, mAmA (Oh uncle!) This powder is termed as ammAn podi)? kaNNan says “Let it be any powder. What will you people, caught in that, do?” Through the third line of the pAsuram they say “Why are we unable to say anything? We could say something by which we would be able to erase all the bad deeds done by you to us and make you such that you cannot show yourself in public after that. For a reason, we are not saying anything”. What is that reason?

noyyar piLLaigaL enbadhaRku – people of the town, who are not aware of the mischiefs that kaNNan is making towards them, will say “kaNNan is a child. Since he is unable to sustain himself without playing with them, he has entered amidst them. What damage will come their way if they say ‘Let him come’. They are telling him ‘Do not enter’. They are indeed mean; they are like children”, shifting the blame on these girls.

nOva uraikkilOm – If we say a word, it will be enough. You cannot come out freely, at all. Due to the reason stated earlier, we are not saying it. While their affection towards him is the real reason for their not revealing anything, they say this merely to frighten him. Since kaNNan knows the real reason, he looks at them lovingly and starts to destroy their toy-houses. Looking at that, they say further …

seyya thAmaraik kaNNinAy engaL siRRil vandhu sidhaiyElE – through your divine eyes, do not negate the firmness with which we are building the toy-houses for the sake of kAman.
