There is no compulsion for him to do only in a particular manner in destroying the enemies of followers\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>kurakkinap padai kodu kurai kadalin mIdhu pOy<\/em><br \/><em>arakkar angu aranga venjaram thurandha Adhi nI<\/em><br \/><em>irakka maN koduththavaRku irakkam onRum inRiyE<\/em><br \/><em>parakka vaiththu aLandhu koNda paRpa pAdhan allaiyE<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Word-by-Word Meanings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>kurakku<\/em> \u2013 monkeys\u2019<br \/><em>inam<\/em> \u2013 troop<br \/><em>padai<\/em>&#8211; army<br \/><em>kodu<\/em> \u2013 taking it<br \/><em>kurai<\/em> \u2013 boisterous<br \/><em>kadalin<\/em> \u2013 ocean\u2019s<br \/><em>mIdhu<\/em> \u2013 on top<br \/><em>pOy <\/em>\u2013 going, after building a divine dam<br \/><em>arakkar<\/em> \u2013 demons such as rAvaNa et al<br \/><em>angu<\/em> \u2013 there<br \/><em>aranga<\/em> \u2013 to hide in fear<br \/><em>vem<\/em> \u2013 fiery<br \/><em>saram<\/em> \u2013 divine arrows<br \/><em>thurandha<\/em> \u2013 shot<br \/><em>Adhi<\/em>&#8211; great warrior<br \/><em>nI<\/em> \u2013 only you<br \/><em>irakka<\/em> \u2013 to go for taking alms<br \/><em>maN<\/em> \u2013 earth<br \/><em>koduththavaRku<\/em> \u2013 for mahAbali, who gave<br \/><em>irakkam<\/em> \u2013 a place to reside<br \/><em>onRum inRiyE<\/em> \u2013 not having even a foot<br \/><em>parakka<\/em> \u2013 (your divine foot) spread widely<br \/><em>vaiththu<\/em>&#8211; kept<br \/><em>aLandhu koNda<\/em>&#8211; one who measured<br \/><em>paRpa<\/em> \u2013 like a lotus<br \/><em>pAdhan<\/em> \u2013 one who has divine feet<br \/><em>allaiyE<\/em> \u2013 aren\u2019t you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Simple Translation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are the great warrior who took an army of troops of monkey on top of the boisterous ocean, after building a dam on it. You shot divine, fiery arrows on demons there such that they hid themselves in fear. Aren\u2019t you the one with divine feet which are like lotus, with which you measured the land given by mahAbali by keeping them spread out in such a manner that there was no place for mahAbali to reside?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>vyAkyAnam (Commentary)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>kurakkinap padikodu<\/strong> \u2013 taking monkey troops as the army<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>kurai kadalin mIdhu pOy<\/strong> \u2013 the troops of monkey were in fear, wondering \u201cHow do we cross this ocean?\u201d since the ocean was boisterous and in a state of agitation. A dam was built on top of the ocean with stones, over which the monkeys walked across. This implies that emperumAn is capable of controlling strong entities such as ocean with weak entities such as monkeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>arakkar angu aranga<\/strong> \u2013 demons were confident that \u201cDue to the strength of boons that we have acquired as well as the strength of our shoulders, there is none matching us\u201d. However, after seeing this impossible-to-achieve task [of crossing the ocean], they were in a state of fear, not knowing as to what they should do. The word <em>arakka<\/em> refers to hiding; hiding out of fear. The word <em>arakka<\/em> has got modified as <em>aranga<\/em>, with the sound \u2018k\u2019 transforming to the sound \u2018ng\u2019, thus <em>arakka <\/em>became <em>aranga<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>venjaram thurandha<\/strong> \u2013 one who shot arrows which were cruel and fiery, just as it has been mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam SlOkam 46-22 &#8220;<em>dhIptha pAvaka sangkASai<\/em>:<em> Sithai: kAnchanabhUshaNai<\/em>: l <em>na thvAmichchAmyaham dhrashtum rAmENa nihatham Sarai<\/em>: ll&#8221; (I do not wish to see you killed by SrI rAma whose arrows are like burning fire, sharp and decorated with gold).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Adhi nI<\/strong> \u2013 you are the leader among warriors. Since SrI rAma, in this avathAram (incarnation) considered himself as a human being, till the end, the term <em>Adhi<\/em> cannot be taken as referring to his being the causative factor. We have to consider the verse to mean \u201cYou filled up ocean which was a protective layer for lankA, destroying the protection, made the demons fear in their hearts, destroyed them with your arrows; with all these rare activities, you are the leader of the warriors\u201d. The word <em>Adhi<\/em> refers to leadership, here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>irakka maN koduththavaRku<\/strong> \u2013 When you went to seek alms, mahAbali did not say \u201cI will not grant\u201d; he did not pay heed to the words of his preceptor Sukran who said \u201cDo not grant\u201d. For mahAbali, who granted you earth<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>irakam onRu inRiyE<\/strong> \u2013 without leaving even a small space [to reside]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>parakka vaiththu aLandhu koNda<\/strong> \u2013 you showed your small foot, asking for three steps of land with that foot. [Once he granted that] you spread the foot wide and measured all the worlds under his control, with two steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>paRpapAdhan allaiyE<\/strong> \u2013 you have a divine name in SrI vishNu sahasranAmam \u2019\u2019<em>pushpahAsa<\/em>\u2019\u2019 referring to a garden of lotus flowers. With such soft feet, aren\u2019t you the one who measured rough forests, streams, hills, valleys etc? You did not look at your soft feet; you did not look at mahAbali\u2019s magnanimity; you did not bother about indhra who was desiring something else and not you; you only considered that \u201cDidn\u2019t this indhra ask <em>me<\/em> for help?\u201d and carried out his task.
