{"id":50367,"date":"2023-06-11T23:54:29","date_gmt":"2023-06-11T23:54:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/?p=50367"},"modified":"2023-06-11T23:54:29","modified_gmt":"2023-06-11T23:54:29","slug":"perumal-thirumozhi-2-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/2023\/06\/perumal-thirumozhi-2-2\/","title":{"rendered":"perumAL thirumozhi &#8211; 2.2 &#8211; thOdulA malarmangai"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">SrI: SrImathE SatakOpAya nama: SrImathE rAmAnujAya nama: SrImadh varavara munayE nama:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/2023\/05\/perumal-thirumozhi\/\">perumAL thirumozhi<\/a> &gt;&gt; <a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/2023\/06\/perumal-thirumozhi-2\/\">2<sup>nd<\/sup> &nbsp;Decad<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/2023\/06\/perumal-thirumozhi-2-1\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"50365\">&lt;&lt; Previous<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>avathArikai (Introduction)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>emperumAn\u2019s followers recall his divine activities during his incarnation as SrI rAma, krishNa et al and dance, calling out his divine name \u201crangA! rangA!\u201d AzhwAr says that having a dip in the pious river gangA is not greater than being engaged with the divine dust at the feet of such followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>thOdulA malar mangai thOLiNai thOyndhadhum sudar vALiyAl<\/em><br \/><em>nIdu mAmaram seRRadhum nirai mEyththadhum ivaiyE ninaindhu<\/em><br \/><em>AdippAdi arangavO enRu azhaikkum thoNdar adippodi<\/em><br \/><em>Ada nAm peRil gangai nIr kudaindhu Adum vEtkai ennAvadhE<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Word-by-Word Meanings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>thOdu ulAm malar mangai<\/em> \u2013 periya pirAtti (SrI mahAlakshmi), who has as her residence, the lotus flower which has abundant petals<br \/><em>thOL iNai thOyndhadhum<\/em> \u2013 embracing her two divine shoulders<br \/><em>sudar vALiyAl<\/em> \u2013 with arrow having splendour<br \/><em>nIdu mAmaram seRRadhum<\/em> \u2013 piercing the distinguished seven trees<br \/><em>nirai mEyththadhum<\/em> \u2013 grazing herds of cows<br \/><em>ivaiyE ninaindhu<\/em> \u2013 recalling these activities<br \/><em>Adi pAdi<\/em> \u2013 dancing and singing, with overflowing joy<br \/><em>O aranga enRu azhaikkum<\/em> \u2013 calling out \u201caranganE\u201d<br \/><em>thoNdar<\/em> \u2013 SrI vaishNavas, who are his followers, their<br \/><em>adippodi<\/em> \u2013 on the fine particles of dust present on their feet<br \/><em>nAm Ada peRil<\/em> \u2013 if we are able to engage<br \/><em>gangai nIr<\/em> \u2013 in the waters of river gangA<br \/><em>kudaindhu Adum vEtkai<\/em> \u2013 the desire to plunge and have a bath<br \/><em>en Avadhu<\/em> &#8211; for what purpose?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Simple Translation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SrI vaishNavas, the followers of emperumAn, keep recalling the amazing activities of emperumAn such as (1) embracing the divine shoulders of periya pirAtti who dwells on a lotus flower with abundant petals, (2) piercing seven huge trees with a single arrow which was splendorous, (3) grazing herds of cows etc. Due to overflowing joy, they dance and sing, calling out to emperumAn as \u201cOh rangA!\u201d If we are able to engage with the fine dust particles sticking to their feet, will it not be greater than having a dip in the pious waters of river gangA?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>vyAkyAnam (Commentary)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>thOdulA malar mangai thOLiNai thOyndhadhum<\/strong> \u2013 embracing the two divine shoulders of periya pirAtti who resides on a lotus flower which has abundance of petals. AzhwAr hints that only emperumAn has the capability to carry out such rare acts of swimming in a huge flood, embracing the divine shoulders of periya pirAtti etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>sudar vALiyAl<\/strong> &#8211; with a single arrow which was splendorous<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>nIdu mAmaram seRRadhum<\/strong> \u2013 shooting down seven huge trees which had grown tall. The underlying opinion here is that emperumAn shot the arrow and felled the seven huge and strong trees as if the arrow went through holes which were already existing in these seven trees. Was this not an activity which emperumAn carried out in order to bring in confidence in his devotee, sugrIva\u2019s &nbsp;mind to make him believe that he is capable of destroying his enemy vAli? Until now, emperumAn\u2019s greatness had been described. Next, he describes the simplicity of emperumAn\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>nirai mEyththadhum<\/strong> \u2013 though he is the owner of both nithya vibhUthi (SrI vaikuNtam) and leelA vibhUthi (samsAram), emperumAn incarnated as krishNa, in the clan of herds-people and grazed cows, holding a stick in his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ivaiyE ninaindhu<\/strong> \u2013 meditating on these qualities of greatness and simplicity. That they think of nothing else other than these, since they do not desire any benefit, is emphasised by the long syllable in <em>ivaiyE<\/em> (the E-kAram, the long syllable in that word).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>AdippAdi<\/strong> \u2013 due to excessive joy, being unable to remain in the places where they were, they indulge in dancing and singing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>arangavO enRazhaikkum<\/strong> \u2013 due to the distress resulting from their desire to see emperumAn, they call out the divine names of periya perumAL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>thoNdaradippodi Ada nAm peRil<\/strong> \u2013 if we are able to dance in the fine dust coming out of the feet of those SrI vaishNavas who were attracted by the auspicious qualities of emperumAn. AzhwAr desires to enter and dance in the dust of those SrI vaishNavas who have constant connection with emperumAn instead of entering and dancing in rivers such as gangA and kAvEri which had connection once upon a time with emperumAn, since those are more pious than these rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>gangai nIr kudaindhAdum vEtkai ennAvadhE<\/strong> \u2013 what is the benefit in entering and dancing in the waters of gangA, even though it originated from the divine feet of emperumAn, since it also entered the matted hair of people such as rudhra (Sivan) et al and became contaminated?
