in this pAsuram \u2013 the heart which could have helped in seeing the <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sarvEswaran<\/a> who is the swAmi of every one, got attracted into the darkness that is ignorance; and so to destroy such darkness <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/10\/22\/mudhalazhwargal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bhUthaththAzhvar<\/a> lighted the divine lamp that is the knowledge about the paran (<a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAn<\/a>); 1])<br \/>\n<em>gyAnam ennum<\/em> \u2013 (gave the) knowledge about the external one (the <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAn<\/a>) \u2013 para gyAnam;<br \/>\n<em>niRAi viLakku<\/em> \u2013 (with the) lamp that is complete in all aspects<br \/>\n<em>ERRiya<\/em> \u2013 one who lighted it bright;<br \/>\n<em>bhUtham thiruvadi<\/em> \u2013 the swAmi, who is <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/10\/22\/mudhalazhwargal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bhUthaththAzhvAr<\/a><br \/>\n<em>thALgaL nenjaththu uRaiya vaiththu<\/em> \u2013 (<a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAnAr<\/a>) keeps the divine of <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/10\/22\/mudhalazhwargal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AzhvAr <\/a>in his mind as ever present<br \/>\n<em>ALum<\/em> \u2013 and enjoys \/ experiences it;<br \/>\n<em>nallOr<\/em> \u2013 noble people who<br \/>\n<em>Odhum<\/em> \u2013 always recite<br \/>\n<em>iRAmAnusan<\/em> \u2013 such <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAnAr<\/a>\u2019s<br \/>\n<em>pugazh<\/em> \u2013 auspicious qualities<br \/>\n<em>maRaiyinaik kAththu<\/em> \u2013 are those who save the vEdhAs from others and from those who give wrong meanings<br \/>\n<em>manna vaippavar<\/em> \u2013 and would strongly establish (the vEdhas and its true meanings).<br \/>\n<em>indha maNNagaththE<\/em> \u2013 in this world.<\/p>\n<p>(Inner meaning of vEdhas is <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAnAr<\/a>, and the people who always recite <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAnAr<\/a>\u2019s divine names have strongly established that name in this world; vEdhas say that AchAryan\u2019s affection towards us is what would deliver us to <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAn<\/a>; such AchAryan is <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAnAr<\/a> \u2013 so he is the inner meaning).<\/p>\n<p><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>[<\/strong><br \/>\nConsider the states of: gyAna (knowledge), dharisana (realize\/see), prApthi (reach\/attain).<br \/>\ngyAthum, dhrashtum, pravEshtum \u2013 krishNan also said in bhagavath gIthA.<\/p>\n<p>mudhal thiruvanthAdhi \u2013 para bhakthi (knowledge\/devotion towards <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAn<\/a>)<br \/>\niraNdAm thiruvanthAdhi \u2013 para gyAnam (realizing\/seeing <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAn<\/a>) (also said in this pAsuram as<em> iRaivanaik kANum<\/em>);<br \/>\nmUnRAm thiruvanthAdhi \u2013 parama bhakthi (attaining <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAn<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, in case of <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nammAzhvAr<\/a>&#8216;s prabandhams, starting from thiruviruththam through <a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/thiruvaimozhi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thiruvAimozhi<\/a> 10.8 \u2013 para bhakthi;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/thiruvaimozhi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thiruvAimozhi<\/a> \u2013 10.9 \u2013 para gyAnam<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/thiruvaimozhi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thiruvAimozhi<\/a> \u2013 10.10 \u2013 parama bhakthi<br \/>\n<strong>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>iRaivanai<\/strong> \u2013 the swAmi (owner of all the worlds)<\/p>\n<p><strong>idhayaththu<\/strong> \u2013 our heart;<\/p>\n<p><strong>kANum<\/strong> \u2013 which helps in seeing Him;<\/p>\n<p><strong>iruL keda<\/strong> \u2013 As said in\u00a0 \u201c<em>sarvasya chAham hrudhi sannivishta: maththa: smrithir gyAnam apOhanam cha<\/em> [<a href=\"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/\">bhagavath gIthA<\/a> 15.15]\u201d, (~I am sitting in the heart which is the source for such aspects as one\u2019s knowing, understanding, or forgetting \u2013 these are under my control;) and as said in \u201c<em>Isvarah sarva-bhUthAnam hrud-dhEsE arjuna thisthathi<\/em> [bhagavath gIthA 18.61])\u201d (~ <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sarvEswaran<\/a> is present in the lotus that is the heart), and as said in \u201c<em>guhAm pravishtAvAtmAnau hi thadh dharsanAth<\/em> [brahma sUthra &#8211; I.2.11 (42)]\u201d (~ in the cavity of the heart, the two who have entered are the souls of self and of <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">paramAthmA<\/a>; because it is so said by the sAsthrAs);<br \/>\nto destroy the darkness that is attached to such heart; it is the abode of <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sarvEswaran<\/a>; that heart is the gateway to understand about Him; (it is blocked due to karmA)<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;hrudhA manIshA manasA abhiklupthO&#8221;, and\u00a0<\/em> &#8220;ya<em> yEvam vidhuram amruthAsthE bHavanthi<\/em> [mahA nArAyaNOpanishad &#8211; manthram 1.11 ]&#8221; (one who realizes <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAn<\/a> would get the nectar that is mOksham);<\/p>\n<p>for such knowledge of the heart, there is ignorance due to the obstacle due to the scent\/trace of karmAs of previous births;\u00a0 &#8220;<em>agyAnEna Avrutham gyAnam thEna muhyanthi janthava:<\/em>&#8221; [bhagavath gIthA 5.15]\u00a0 (these beings surrounded by lack of knowledge stay ignorant);<\/p>\n<p><em>keda<\/em> &#8211; to make that (agyAnam) to be destroyed; that is, &#8220;<em>hrut-stham gyAnasinAthmana:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>chithvainam samsayam<\/em> [<a href=\"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/\">bhagavath gIthA<\/a> 4.42]&#8221;, and, &#8220;<em>aham agyAna-jam thama: nasayAmyAthma bhAvasthO gyAna dhIpEna bhAsvathA<\/em> [bhagavath gIthA &#8211; 10.11]&#8221; (destroys the agyAnam using the sword\/light of gyAnam),;<\/p>\n<p>for that hurdle to get destroyed which prevents from attaining the true inner knowledge; for that hurdle to be destroyed fully including any scent\/trace of it,<\/p>\n<p><strong>gyAnam ennum niRai viLakku<\/strong> \u2013 (lighted the lamp of knowledge) &#8211; As said in &#8220;<em>yathA na kriyathE jyOthsnA mala prakshALanAth maNe:<\/em>\u00a0<em> yathA udhapAna karaNath kriyathEna jalAmbaram<\/em>&#8221; (like how the sparkle of the gem is not created when the dirt covering it is removed; like how water cannot be created just by digging the well (they are brought out, but not created anew)&#8221;\u00a0 &#8211; as the obstacle that is ignorance is removed, immediately the knowledge would brighten up; such a lamp that is complete in all aspects;\u00a0 &#8220;gyA<em>nEna thu thadh agyAnam yEshAm nAsitham AthmanA: thEshAm Adithya-vath gyAnam prakAsayathi thath param <\/em>[bhagavath\u00a0<em>gIthA &#8211; 5.16]&#8221;,<\/em> (as the ignorance is cut by me with the sword that is knowledge\/truth, the knowledge (in you) would brighten up after that&#8221;, so said gIthOpanishad AchAryan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ERRiya<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<em>anbE thagaLiyA ArvamE neyyAga, inburugu sindhai idu thiriyA, nanburugi, gyAnach chudar viLakku ERRinEn nAraNarkku<\/em>\u201d [iraNdAm thiruvanthAdhi &#8211; 1] \u2013 that is, <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/10\/22\/mudhalazhwargal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AzhvAr<\/a> made his bhakthi as the lamp, his devotion as the ghee, made his mind &#8211; which melts due to immersion the experience of bhagavAn &#8211; as the cotton thread, and lighted for nAraNan the light that is complete in all aspects; and gave us the prabandham starting with this pAsuram;<\/p>\n<p><strong>bhUthath thiruvadith thALgaL<\/strong> \u2013 the divine feet of such <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/10\/22\/mudhalazhwargal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bhUthaththAzhvAr <\/a>who is our owner\/lord.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/mamunigal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">jIyar<\/a> too said \u201c<em>am thamizhAl narkalaigaL Ayndhu uraiththa AzhvArgaL indha ulagil iruL nInga<\/em>\u201d [upadhEsa raththina mAlai \u2013 5] (with sweet thamizh the <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/azhwars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Azhvars <\/a>gave us the prabandhams, for the darkness to be destroyed in this world);<\/p>\n<p><strong>nenjaththu uRaiya vaiththu ALum<\/strong> \u2013 (<a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAnAr<\/a>) always thinks about and keeps in his heart (the divine feet of the <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/10\/22\/mudhalazhwargal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AzhvAr<\/a>), and involves in that experience; ALum \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAnAr<\/a> enjoys <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/10\/22\/mudhalazhwargal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AzhvAr<\/a>\u2019s divine feet and names in whichever and many ways (yadhEshta viniyOgArham).<\/p>\n<p><strong>pugazh Odhum<\/strong> \u2013 (those nobles ones who are) always reciting the divine names<\/p>\n<p><strong>irAmAnusan<\/strong> \u2013 of such <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAnAr<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>nallOr<\/strong> \u2013 noble people; such as <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nammAzhvAr <\/a>who said \u2018<em>kaliyum kedum kaNdu koNmin<\/em>\u2019 [<a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/thiruvaimozhi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thiruvAimozhi<\/a> 5.2.1] (~ watch out \u2013 the kali would be destroyed (due to <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAnAr<\/a>));\u00a0 such as <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/22\/nathamunigal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sriman nAthamunigaL<\/a> who, by the grace of <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nammAzhvAr<\/a>, had minded the <a href=\"http:\/\/bhavishyadhacharyan.koyil.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bhavishayadhAchArya<\/a> vigraham (the statue of <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAnAr<\/a> who was going to incarnate in the future) the rest of his life; <a href=\"http:\/\/href=&quot;https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/01\/alavandhar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ALavandhAr<\/a> who, after he (<a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAnAr<\/a>) incarnated, after hearing about his auspicious qualities and becoming delightful, had graced <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iLaiyAzhvar<\/a> (<em>Amudhalvan)<\/em> who was at kariyamANikkap perumAL sannidhi; such noble people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>maRaiyinaik kAththu<\/strong> \u2013 (saved the vEdas) &#8211; As said in \u201c<em>pipEdhy<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">alpa<\/span>shruthAth vEdha:<\/em>\u201d, from the lowly ones that follow other sruthis \u2013 that is bAhya (who do not accept vEdhas), kudhrushti (who interpret vEdhas wrongly) \u2013 saved vEdhas from these people; who saved? \u2013 who made shruthi get the nAthan (husband)? \u2013 those great ones like <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/10\/05\/kurathazhwan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AzhvAn<\/a>, as said in &#8220;<em>yadhukthayas thrayIkaNtE yAnthi mangaLa sUthrathAm<\/em>&#8220;;\u00a0 <strong>maRaiyinai<\/strong> \u2013 and those who gave the true meanings (wrote vyAkyAnam) later for dhramida vEdhas (dhivya prabandhams), that is those starting from <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/04\/14\/thirukkurugaippiran-pillan-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">piLLAn<\/a>, such that these <a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prabandhams<\/a> don\u2019t get misinterpreted by kudhrushtis in the future; you see, the noble ones did not do just that much&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>indha maNNagaththE manna vaippavarE<\/strong> &#8211; &#8230; they continued to establish, and strengthened the established meanings of these two (vedhAs and <a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thamizh prabandhams<\/a>) in <em>this<\/em> world that was filled with such enemies, says <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/03\/26\/thiruvarangathu-amudhanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amudhanAr<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From srI u.vE. thirumalai nallAn chakravarthy rAmakrishNa iyengAr\u2019s \u2018amudha virundhu\u2019:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>keda<\/em> &#8211; since the light is complete in all aspects, there is no chance of darkness returning, so <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/03\/26\/thiruvarangathu-amudhanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amudhanAr<\/a> says &#8216;keda&#8217; (destroyed).<\/p>\n<p><em>niRai viLakku<\/em> &#8211; para gyAnam &#8211; sAkshAthkAram &#8211; realize the truth of <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">jIvAthma<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">paramAthmA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>bhUthath thiruvadi<\/em> &#8211; the word thiruvadi is used in the sense of respect. This is done in many other prabandhams too.<\/p>\n<p>bhUtham has the meaning of having fulfillment of knowledge about brahmam, and thus being a being (saththai). Also it has the meaning of those who roam around in the world (for spreading such gyAnam), for the sake of betterment of the world, even though they would not have to get any personal benefit. <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/10\/22\/mudhalazhwargal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Azhvar<\/a> also was going around places;<\/p>\n<p><em>thALgaL nenjaththu uRaiya vaiththu ALum &#8211; <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAnAr<\/a> froze in his mind such divine feet of <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/10\/22\/mudhalazhwargal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bhUthathAzhvar <\/a>(who was roaming around in the world), and nourished those divine feet. Also since <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAnAr<\/a> started carrying out the wishes of <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/10\/22\/mudhalazhwargal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Azhvar<\/a> (spreading the truth), there was not any more need for <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/10\/22\/mudhalazhwargal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AzhvAr<\/a> to roam around;<\/p>\n<p><em>indha maNNagaththE &#8211; <\/em> in &#8216;this&#8217; world &#8211; since it is hard to spread goodness in this world, <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/03\/26\/thiruvarangathu-amudhanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amudhanAr<\/a> is stressing &#8216;indha&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Noble <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AchAryas<\/a> of our sampradhayam consider that <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emperumAnAr<\/a> is the AchAryan who is complete in all respects; so he is the inner meaning of vEdhas.
