However, what can samsAris, who do not have your knowledge and who are not fortunate to attain sarvESvaran, do?\u201d AzhwAr responds saying \u201cThey may not have knowledge to the extent that I have; it is enough if they recite these pAsurams; they will also attain the same benefit which I attained\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>nallAr navil kurugUr nagarAn thirumAl thiruppEr<br \/>\n<\/em><em>vallAr adikkaNNi sUdiya mARan viNNapm seydha<br \/>\n<\/em><em>sollAr thodaiyal innURum vallAr azhundhAr piRappAm<br \/>\n<\/em><em>pollA aruvinai mAyavan sERRaLLal poynnilaththE<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Word-by-Word Meanings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>nallAr<\/em> \u2013 distinguished people\\<br \/>\n<em>navil<\/em> \u2013 speaking (permanently repeating what AzhwAr said)<br \/>\n<em>kurugUr<\/em> \u2013 known as thirukkurugUr<br \/>\n<em>nagarAn<\/em> \u2013 lord of thirukkurugUr<br \/>\n<em>thirumAl<\/em> \u2013 Sriya:pathi (consort of SrI mahAlakshmi), his<br \/>\n<em>thiruppEr<\/em> \u2013 divine names<br \/>\n<em>vallAr<\/em> \u2013 SrIvaishNavas who are qualified to recite, their<br \/>\n<em>adi<\/em> \u2013 divine feet<br \/>\n<em>kaNNi<\/em> \u2013 garland<br \/>\n<em>sUdiya<\/em> \u2013 one who donned on his head<br \/>\n<em>mARan<\/em> \u2013 nammAzhwAr<br \/>\n<em>viNNappam seydha<\/em> \u2013 mercifully sung<br \/>\n<em>sol<\/em> \u2013 through divine words<br \/>\n<em>Ar<\/em> \u2013 complete<br \/>\n<em>thodaiyal<\/em> &#8211; garland<br \/>\n<em>innURum<\/em> \u2013 these hundred pAsurams<br \/>\n<em>vallAr<\/em> \u2013 those who can recite<br \/>\n<em>piRappAm<\/em> \u2013 known as birth<br \/>\n<em>pollA<\/em> \u2013 cruel (capable of destroying AthmA)<br \/>\n<em>aru<\/em> \u2013 difficult (to cross over)<br \/>\n<em>vinai<\/em> \u2013 being the cause for good and bad deeds<br \/>\n<em>mAyam<\/em> \u2013 being deceitful (by creating taste)<br \/>\n<em>van<\/em> \u2013 being strong<br \/>\n<em>aLLal sERu<\/em> \u2013 pressing like a quagmire<br \/>\n<em>poy<\/em> \u2013 being temporary<br \/>\n<em>nilaththil<\/em> \u2013 in this prakruthi (primordial matter)<br \/>\n<em>azhundhAr<\/em> \u2013 will not be caught<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simple Translation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AzhwAr is the lord of thirukkurugUr where distinguished people keep reciting his divine words. He dons on his head the divine feet of SrIvaishNavas who keep reciting the divine names of SrIman nArAyaNan, the divine consort of SrI mahAlakshmi. Those who learn well the hundred pAsurams which are like a garland composed of fully complete words and which are divinely composed by such nammAzhwAr, will not get caught in this samsAram which perpetuates birth in it, which destroys the true nature of AthmA and which presses like a quagmire.<\/p>\n<p><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>nallAr navil<\/strong> \u2013 all the people in the world keep chanting \u201cAzhwAr, AzhwAr\u201d just like the people in ayOdhyA kept reciting \u201crAma rAma\u201d as mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 128-103 \u201crAmO rAmO rAma:\u201d (while SrI rAma ruled the kingdom, the people kept reciting rAma, rAma, rAma). SrI rAmAyaNam bAla kANdam 1-16 says \u201c<em>sarvadhA abhigatha: sadhbi:<\/em>\u201d (always accessible to purely good people) \u2013 just as ocean is attained by rivers, SrI rAma is attained by sages. When SrI rAma sits in a place to take rest after completing his chores, sages, who keep thinking of others\u2019 good, would reach him. Their purpose is not to remove any shortcoming in SrI rAma \u2013 do rivers reach ocean in order to fill it up, which has been filled up already? No, they need to sustain themselves \u2013 in the same way, these sages attain SrI rAma in order to get rid of their shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>thirumAl . . . <\/strong>\u2013 while the people surround him, chanting his name, AzhwAr keeps praising the followers of sarvESvaran just as he had said in thiruvAimozhi 3-7-1 \u201c<em>payilum thiruvudaiyAr yavarElum avar kaNdIr emmai ALum paramar<\/em>\u201d (those who carry out kainkaryam permanently are my lords)<\/p>\n<p>AzhwAr has as his identity the garland, also known as divine feet of SrIvaishNavas, who have the qualification to recite the divine names of SrIya:pathi (consort of SrI mahAlakshmi).<\/p>\n<p><strong>viNNappam seydha<\/strong> \u2013 in the first pAsuram of this prabandham AzhwAr had said \u201c<em>adiyEn seyyum viNNappamE<\/em>\u201d (this is my appeal) and completed the prabandham with <em>viNNappam<\/em> (the prabandham composed by him).<\/p>\n<p><strong>sollAr thodaiyal<\/strong> \u2013 this [prabandham] need not be cherished just because it has been composed by a well-wisher. This should be cherished for the sweetness observed in it, just as it has been said of SrI rAmAyaNam in bAla kANdam 4-8 \u201c<em>pAtyE gEyE cha mathuram<\/em>\u201d (it is melodious to read and sing).<\/p>\n<p><strong>innURum<\/strong> \u2013 unlike mahAbhAratham which is very expansive or praNavam which is very brief, this prabandham has only hundred pAsurams, indicating knowledge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>vallAr azhundhAr<\/strong> \u2013 first he speaks about the benefit; in what will they not get trapped?<\/p>\n<p><strong>piRappAm pollA<\/strong> \u2013 the cruel cycle of births. The <em>Athmavasthu<\/em> (sentient being) is full of knowledge and full of joy. He is sarvESvaran\u2019s servitor. Such Athma comes to samsAram to be in association with achith vasthu (insentient entities) which is incongruent with it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>aruvinai<\/strong> \u2013 karma (effect of past deeds, both good and bad) which follows the AthmA, grows continuously and locks up the AthmA in samsAram.<\/p>\n<p><strong>mAya<\/strong> \u2013 creating taste and scent in samsAram<\/p>\n<p><strong>van sERu<\/strong> \u2013 if one falls into this quagmire, the stain made cannot be removed easily.<\/p>\n<p><strong>aLLal<\/strong> \u2013 if one sets foot on it, it will pull down the person further<\/p>\n<p><strong>poynnilam<\/strong> \u2013 this samsAram does not have a floor. If one stands atop it, the legs will keep exploring below further, searching for firm footing.
