A few samsAris, on seeing this, told him \u201cWe are engaged with matters relating to samsAram and are not complaining that time is not lengthening or shortening. We are enjoying the matters relating to samsAram even if time lengthens or shortens. Why don\u2019t you change your involvement from matters relating to bhagavAn and engage with worldly matters?\u201d\u00a0 AzhwAr says \u201cYes, I could do it provided I get a heart which is capable of doing that; my heart knows nothing other than bhagavAn. Even this heart I can engage with, provided he had not stolen it\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>surunguRi veNNey thoduvuNda kaLvanai vaiyam muRRum<br \/>\n<\/em><em>orunguRavuNda peruvayiRRALanai mAvali mAttu<br \/>\n<\/em><em>irunguRaLAgi isaiya Or mUvadi vENdichchenRa<br \/>\n<\/em><em>perungiRiyAnai allAl adiyEn nenjam pENaladhE<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Word-by-Word Meanings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>surungu<\/em> \u2013 contracted (with the aid of deceptive ropes)<br \/>\n<em>uRi<\/em> \u2013 hoop like structure, hung from ceiling to keep pots etc<br \/>\n<em>veNNey<\/em> \u2013 butter [kept in a pot inside that hoop like structure]<br \/>\n<em>thodu uNda<\/em> \u2013 one who stole and ate<br \/>\n<em>kaLvanai<\/em> \u2013\u00a0 one who incarnated as krishNa having the quality of stealing<br \/>\n<em>vaiyam muRRum<\/em> \u2013 entire world<br \/>\n<em>orungu<\/em> \u2013 in a small corner<br \/>\n<em>uRa<\/em> \u2013 fitting well<br \/>\n<em>uNda<\/em> \u2013 swallowed<br \/>\n<em>peru<\/em> \u2013 huge<br \/>\n<em>vayiRRALanai<\/em> \u2013 having stomach<br \/>\n<em>mAvalimAttu<\/em> \u2013 to mAvali<br \/>\n<em>iru<\/em> \u2013 huge (small)<br \/>\n<em>kuRaLAgi<\/em> \u2013 as vAmana [dwarf]<br \/>\n(went)<br \/>\n<em>isaiya<\/em> \u2013 making (him to) accept<br \/>\n<em>Or<\/em> \u2013 unique<br \/>\n<em>mUvadi<\/em> \u2013 three steps<br \/>\n<em>vENdi<\/em> \u2013 seeking<br \/>\n<em>senRa<\/em> \u2013 one who went with a beautiful gait<br \/>\n<em>perum kiRiyAnai allAl<\/em> \u2013 other than the one who is a great means<br \/>\n(another)<br \/>\n<em>adiyEn<\/em> \u2013 a servitor only for him<br \/>\n<em>nenjam<\/em> \u2013 mind<br \/>\n<em style=\"font-size: inherit;\">peNaladhu<\/em><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"> \u2013 will not like<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Simple Translation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My heart will not like anyone other than sarvESvaran who ate butter from the hoop by stealing, who kept all the worlds inside corner of his stomach, who went to mahAbali, seeking alms as a dwarf and made him agree to giving him three steps of land and who is a great means [for attaining himself].<\/p>\n<p><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>surunguRi veNNey<\/strong> \u2013 it was a hoop made with deceptive ropes [so that its location would not be known easily].<\/p>\n<p><strong>veNNey thoduvuNda<\/strong> \u2013 he stole the butter and ate it, without disturbing the marks which had been made by the owners of butter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>kaLvanai<\/strong> \u2013 he stole the concept of stealing itself; thus some people [who had lost their butter] said \u201cThis could not have been stolen by people; did Gods steal our butter? Did we not keep butter inside that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>vaiyam . . . <\/strong>\u2013 while his stomach got filled up with butter, when he swallowed all the worlds [during deluge], it did not fill up even half his stomach. The implication here is that he would be able to sustain himself with a material touched by his followers while his mind was not much enthused about protecting the worlds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>mAvali mAttu<\/strong> \u2013 he approached and attained a demonic entity; AzhwAr says that sarvESvaran should have attained him who desired only sarvESvaran and none else.<\/p>\n<p><strong>irunguRaLAgi<\/strong> \u2013 being a huge dwarf [The word <em>iru<\/em> which means huge is used as a <em>viparIthalakshaNam <\/em>here \u2013 meaning exactly the opposite]. His short stature was such that among the dwarfs of the world, the shortest dwarf would appear like thrivikraman in his presence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>isaiya<\/strong> \u2013 he did all the work to make mahAbali to agree to his request; making mahAbali\u2019s acceptance to be under his control. Though there were others (sukrAchAryar) who did not want mahAbali to accede to his request, sarvESvaran made mahAbali to accept.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Or mUvadi vENdichchenRa<\/strong> \u2013 instead of asking for two steps and measuring with both the steps, he asked for three steps and measured with two steps so that he could imprison mahAbali with the third step.<\/p>\n<p><strong>vENdichcchenRa perungiRiyAnai allAl<\/strong> \u2013 he went in such a way that his quality of <em>sarva nirapEksham<\/em> \u2013 \u2018not desiring anything\u2019 was not manifested. He went such that mahAbali thought \u201cUnless I give him what he wants, he cannot sustain himself\u201d. He hid his quality of <em>ISvarathvam<\/em> \u2013 controlling everyone. He went asking for alms to make it appear that one who does not have any desire unfulfilled, came with a desire. He took such a form that it created mercy in mahAbali.<\/p>\n<p><strong>perungiRiyAn<\/strong> \u2013 a hugely clever person.<\/p>\n<p><strong>adiyEn<\/strong> \u2013 AzhwAr is not like mahAbali, about to give something. He is not like indhra [head of celestial entities] too, waiting to obtain one.
