This pAsuram reflects the words of the <em>nAyaki<\/em> in distress due to that.<\/p>\n<p>Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>sIrarasANdu than sengOl silanAL seleeikkazhindha<br \/>\n<\/em><em>pArarasoththu maRaindhadhu nAyiRu pAraLandha<br \/>\n<\/em><em>pErarasE em visumbarasE emmai nIththu vanjiththa<br \/>\n<\/em><em>OrarasE aruLAy iruLAy vandhu uRuginRadhE<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Word-by-Word Meanings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>sIr<\/em> \u2013 very well<br \/>\n<em>arasu<\/em> \u2013 kingdom<br \/>\n<em>ANdu<\/em> \u2013 governing<br \/>\n<em>than<\/em> \u2013 his<br \/>\n<em>sengOl<\/em> \u2013 rule<br \/>\n<em>sila nAL<\/em> \u2013 some time<br \/>\n<em>seleei<\/em> \u2013 conducting<br \/>\n<em>kazhindha<\/em> \u2013 after spending<br \/>\n<em>pAr<\/em> \u2013 on the earth<br \/>\n<em>arasE<\/em> \u2013 with the kings<br \/>\n<em>oththu<\/em> \u2013 being equal [to them]<br \/>\n<em>nAyiRu<\/em> \u2013 sUriyan (sun)<br \/>\n<em>maRaindhadhu<\/em> \u2013 set<br \/>\n<em>iruLAy vandhu<\/em> \u2013 darkness, with its true form, came<br \/>\n<em>uRuginRadhu<\/em> \u2013 is contacting<br \/>\n<em>pAr<\/em> \u2013 earth<br \/>\n<em>aLandha<\/em> \u2013 one who seized<br \/>\n<em>pEr<\/em> \u2013 having a great quality<br \/>\n<em>arasE<\/em> \u2013 oh lord!<br \/>\n<em>em<\/em> \u2013 being in close proximity to us<br \/>\n<em>visumbu<\/em> \u2013 for paramapadham (SrIvaikuNtam)<br \/>\n<em>arasE<\/em> \u2013 oh one who is the lord!<br \/>\n<em>emmai<\/em> \u2013 us<br \/>\n<em>nIththu<\/em> \u2013 leaving<br \/>\n<em>vanjiththu<\/em> \u2013 through deceit<br \/>\n<em>Or<\/em> \u2013 being unique<br \/>\n<em>arasE<\/em> \u2013 oh one who became the king!<br \/>\n<em>aruLAy<\/em> \u2013 show your mercy<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simple Translation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The sUriyan (sun) set like kings who rule very well for some time and then leave. Darkness which followed that, engulfed me fully. Oh my lord who measured this earth! Oh the lord of paramapadham which is close to us! Oh the lord who deceitfully left me! You should show your mercy on me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>sIrarasu ANdu<\/strong> \u2013 ruling the kingdom well. When the pANdava king dharman left the country for <em>vanavAsam<\/em> (to dwell in the forest), the people of the country followed him with all their ritualistic paraphernalia, saying \u201cif dharmaputhran does not rule the country we too would not stay here\u201d; ruling the kingdom in such a noble way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>than sengOl silanAL seleei<\/strong> \u2013 not ruling for an insignificant period but for a long time, in an eminent way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>kazhindha pAr arasu oththu<\/strong> \u2013 ruling like respectable kings such as mANdhAthA (one of the kings in the ikshvAku dynasty, a lineage to which SrI rAma belonged)<\/p>\n<p><strong>maRaindhadhu nAyiRu<\/strong> \u2013 when sUriyan is around, it would appear as if <em>nAyakan<\/em> is around, comforting her. However, with sUriyan setting and night approaching, the sensory organs are focussing only on her separation from the <em>nAyakan<\/em> and are frightening her. In the daytime, each sensory organ would be involved in matters related to it and distress due to separation would not be intensely felt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>maRaindhadhu<\/strong> \u2013 sUriyan is common to all people; however, to the <em>nAyaki<\/em>, he was more significant since she was looking at his disappearance just like she would keep looking at her <em>nAyakan<\/em> when he was leaving her.<\/p>\n<p><strong>pAraLandha pErarasE<\/strong> \u2013 if sUriyan, who has been caught in the web of darkness, has to be redeemed, it would require the presence of the same entity who had redeemed earth from the clutches of mahAbali.<\/p>\n<p><strong>aLandha<\/strong> \u2013 just as he had measured the entire expanse of earth with his divine feet, couldn\u2019t he measure this darkness too? Just as it has been mentioned in thiruviruththam 33 &#8220;<em>iruLAr vinai keda&#8221;<\/em> (to annihilate the sins of darkness) wouldn\u2019t he be ruling to get rid of darkness?<\/p>\n<p><strong>pErarasE<\/strong> \u2013 he is\u00a0 not one who carries out lowly and simple acts; all his activities are great ones.<\/p>\n<p><strong>em visumbarasE<\/strong> \u2013 after acquiring knowledge about matters relating to sarvESvaran, paramapadham (SrIvaikuNtam) appears to be much closer to AzhwAr than samsAram. Just as it has been mentioned in thiruvAimozhi 6-8-1 \u201c<em>ponnulagu ALIrO<\/em>\u201d (AzhwAr tells the birds that he would give them SrIvaikuNtam itself to rule), AzhwAr had gifted SrIvaikuNtam as the first gift to those who were to unite him with sarvESvaran.<\/p>\n<p><strong>emmai nIththu vanjiththa OrarasE<\/strong> \u2013 thirukkurugaippirAn piLLAn would explain this by saying \u201cAs if he had crowned himself separately for the two vibhUthis, it appears that he had taken over this vibhUthi only to separate me and to destroy me\u201d. bhattar would explain this by saying \u201cWhen he separated from me, he had said \u2018I will not leave you\u2019; once he separated me from him, he seemed to say \u2018Who can equal me in this nature?\u2019 It appeared as if he had coronated himself separately for this behaviour saying \u2018There is none to equal me in dismissing those who will not separate\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>aruLAy<\/strong> \u2013 when nothing exists, there will be none asking for mercy to be showered. Those who are in paramapadham will not desire anything since they are deeply engaged with the qualities of sarvESvaran; those who are in samsAram will sustain themselves only through food, water etc. Could he not shower his mercy on someone who, staying here, is in the status of those who are in paramapadham? Those in paramapadham would be fully devoted to enjoying the auspicious qualities of sarvESvaran while those in samsAram would be fully devoted to <em>SabdhAdhi vishayam<\/em> (matters relating to sensory perceptions such as sound, touch etc). sarvESvaran has to shower his mercy on samsAris who have only knowledge about his auspicious qualities but not the experience with them.<\/p>\n<p>What is the need to shower his mercy here, now?<\/p>\n<p><strong>iruLAy vandhu<\/strong> \u2013 instead of a tiger disguised as a cow, now the real tiger itself has come in the form of darkness. In other words, instead of fearing deluge, darkness has come to cause harm.\u00a0\u00a0 For regular samsAris, deluge would cause harm; for those in separation, darkness itself does that much of harm.<\/p>\n<p><strong>uRuginRadhE<\/strong> \u2013 darkness has come to envelop her fully.
