Her mother says \u201cWhat is surprising about her saying such words in her youthful state? Isn\u2019t this how she has been thinking even in her childhood days?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>mulaiyO muzhumuRRum pOndhila moy pUnguzhal kuRiya<br \/>\n<\/em><em>kalaiyO araiyillai nAvO kuzhaRum<\/em> <em>kadal maNNellAm<br \/>\n<\/em><em>vilaiyO ena miLirum kaN ivaL paramE perumAn<br \/>\n<\/em><em>malaiyO thiruvEngadam enRu kaRkinRa vAsagamE<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Word-by-Word Meanings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>mulaiyO<\/em> \u2013 if one considers her bosom<br \/>\n<em>muzhumuRRum<\/em> \u2013 \u00a0even a little bit<br \/>\n<em>pOndhila<\/em> \u2013 have not sprouted<br \/>\n<em>moy<\/em> \u2013 being dense<br \/>\n<em>pU<\/em> \u2013 being beautiful<br \/>\n<em>kuzhal<\/em> \u2013 locks<br \/>\n<em>kuRiya<\/em> \u2013 are short<br \/>\n<em>kalaiyO<\/em> \u2013 if one considers her dress<br \/>\n<em>araiyillai<\/em> \u2013 has not been properly tied on the waist<br \/>\n<em>nAvO<\/em> \u2013 if one considers her tongue<br \/>\n<em>kuzhaRum<\/em> \u2013 will not be clear<br \/>\n<em>kadal<\/em> \u2013 surrounded by the ocean<br \/>\n<em>maN ellAm<\/em> \u2013 this entire earth<br \/>\n<em>vilaiyO ena<\/em> \u2013 \u00a0will it be the price (for the eyes)<br \/>\n<em>kaN<\/em> \u2013 the eye<br \/>\n<em>miLirum<\/em> \u2013 huge<br \/>\n<em>perumAn<\/em> \u2013 sarvESvaran\u2019s<br \/>\n<em>malaiyO<\/em> \u2013 if one considers thirumalai<br \/>\n<em>thiruvEngadam<\/em> \u2013 it happens to be thiruvEngadam<br \/>\n<em>enRu<\/em> \u2013 saying so<br \/>\n<em>kaRkinRa<\/em> \u2013 learning<br \/>\n<em>vAsagam<\/em> \u2013 spoken word<br \/>\n<em>ivaL paramE<\/em> \u2013 is it apt for her in her state?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simple Translation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The bosoms of this girl have not sprouted. Her locks which are dense and beautiful are short. The dress which she wears does not sit well on her waist. Her tongue has not grown out of her child-like gibberish way of speaking. However her eyes are sparkling such that one could say that even the earth, surrounded by ocean, is not equivalent in terms of compensation for them. Her words saying that sarvESvaran\u2019s divine hill is thiruvEngadam is indeed surprising.<\/p>\n<p><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>mulaiyO . . . <\/strong>\u2013 these words are best said after reaching a certain stage [in the development of a girl\u2019s life].<\/p>\n<p><strong>mulaiyO muzhu muRRum pOndhila<\/strong> \u2013 it is not that her bosoms have not grown properly; even the place from where they sprout has not been identified [she is such a young girl].<\/p>\n<p><strong>moy pUnguzhal kuRiya<\/strong> \u2013 the locks which are dense and beautiful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>kuRiya<\/strong> \u2013 they are so short that if the <em>nAyakan<\/em> wants to arrange the locks into a bun and she, not liking that arrangement, wishes to let the locks down, he will not [be able to] fall at her feet [to beg her to keep them as a bun].<\/p>\n<p><strong>kalaiyO araiyillai<\/strong> \u2013 she does not even know as to where to tie her dress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>nAvO kuzhaRum<\/strong> \u2013 if the mothers teach her a few words, she would pronounce them indistinctly, like gibberish. They would then teach her a few simple words such as \u201c<em>iyar<\/em> {father), <em>Achchi<\/em> (mother)\u201d Her indistinct words sound better than their clear pronunciation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>kadal . . . <\/strong>\u2013 when parASara bhattar was explaining this pAsuram, his disciple, nanjIyar told him \u201che (AzhwAr) says that all the other limbs have not developed well. But he has spoken about the greatness of eyes alone. This appears contradictory\u201d to which bhattar responded saying \u201cIt is not that way. Even here, he has stated only the condition of under-development\u201d. \u201cHow is that?\u201d \u201cAt a small age, the eyes will see objects fully; at a youthful stage [adolescent age], the eyes will see through glance only. Hence, here too AzhwAr is speaking of very young age only\u201d The splendour in her eyes is such that even if the entire earth, surrounded by ocean, is given as a compensation, it will not be a match.<\/p>\n<p><strong>miLirum<\/strong> \u2013 even if the waves keep pushing against the shore, they cannot cross it. This is similar to that. When united with <em>nAyakan<\/em>, a girl will look at him with tenderness and love. Unlike that, this girl would look at her mother and her beloved, equally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ivaL paramE<\/strong> \u2013 Is it apt for her age? It is because of her friends, just as it has been mentioned in periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 3-7-2 \u201c<em>sAyvilAdha kuRundhalai<\/em>\u201d (even though they are young without any shyness or reverence, my girl is joining with a few girls and appears like one possessed).<\/p>\n<p><strong>perumAL malaiyO thiruvEngadamenRu<\/strong> \u2013 is it apt for her age to disregard para and vyUha forms of sarvESvaran and focus on archA form, and that too saying that thiruvEngadam is the divine hill for his residence? vEdhas set out to measure one quality, the joy of sarvESvaran, and returned empty handed. But the eminence of archAvathAram is not like that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>kaRkinRa vAsagam<\/strong> \u2013 the words spoken by her; alternatively, the words taught by her mothers so that they could hear them from her mouth. thiruvAimozhi 6-5-7 says \u201c<em>ivaL vAyanagaL thirundha<\/em>\u201d (to appear clearly from her mouth).
