All along the mother was distressed by the sorrows of her daughter. Now she feels sorry also for the lady who is in the western direction [this is a simile for dusk time which brings with it, its own trails of sadness]. This is similar to the situation of the pirAtti who felt sorry for various naturally occurring events in thiruvAimozhi 2-1 padhigam \u201c<em>vAyum thiraiyugaLum<\/em>\u201d. Everything that one looks at, becomes inimical.<\/p>\n<p>Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>pAlvAyp piRaippiLLai okkalaikkoNdu pagal izhandha<br \/>\n<\/em><em>mEl pAl dhisaippeN pulambuRum mAlai ulagaLandha<br \/>\n<\/em><em>mAl pAl thuzhAykku manam udaiyArkku nalgiRRai ellAm<br \/>\n<\/em><em>sOlvAn pugundhu idhu Or panivAdai thuzhAginRadhE<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Word-by-Word Meanings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>pAlvAy<\/em> \u2013 having milk in its mouth<br \/>\n<em>piRai<\/em> \u2013 crescent of moon<br \/>\n<em>piLLai<\/em> &#8211; child<br \/>\n<em>okkalai<\/em> \u2013 on the hip<br \/>\n<em>koNdu<\/em> \u2013 carrying<br \/>\n<em>pagal<\/em> \u2013\u00a0 day time, the master<br \/>\n<em>izhandha<\/em> \u2013 one who lost<br \/>\n<em>mEl pAl<\/em> \u2013 being on the western side<br \/>\n<em>dhisai<\/em> \u2013 as the direction<br \/>\n<em>peN<\/em> \u2013 who could be considered as a lady<br \/>\n<em>pulambuRum<\/em> \u2013 crying<br \/>\n<em>mAlai<\/em> \u2013 evening time<br \/>\n<em>ulagu<\/em> &#8211; worlds<br \/>\n<em>aLandha<\/em> \u2013 one who occupied<br \/>\n<em>mAl pAl<\/em> \u2013 with sarvESvaran<br \/>\n<em>thuzhAykku<\/em> \u2013 fond of thuLasi<br \/>\n<em>manamudaiyArkku<\/em> \u2013 those who have their minds [on such thuLasi]<br \/>\n<em>nalgiRRaiyellAm<\/em> \u2013 all those (including existence) which were given<br \/>\n<em>sOlvAn<\/em> \u2013 to steal<br \/>\n<em>pugundhu<\/em> \u2013 entering<br \/>\n<em>idhu<\/em> \u2013 this<br \/>\n<em>Or<\/em> \u2013 unique<br \/>\n<em>pani<\/em> \u2013 cold<br \/>\n<em>vAdai<\/em> \u2013 northerly wind<br \/>\n<em>thuzhAginRadhu<\/em> \u2013 gently hugging<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simple Translation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The western direction is like a lady who has lost daytime, her husband, and was crying. She had on her waist, the moon who is like a child which had milk in its mouth. At this time, the cold northerly wind gently hugged people who were waiting to get the divine garland of thuLasi from sarvESvaran, who had seized all the worlds, with the intention of stealing from those people, whatever had been given by sarvESvaran.<\/p>\n<p><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>pAlvAyp pirAppiLLai<\/strong> \u2013 The lady called as western direction, stood with the crescent moon on her waist, crying for having lost her husband, the daytime or sUriyan. She appears like one who has lost her husband recently, crying out for him, carrying her infant who cannot even suckle properly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>pAlvAy<\/strong> \u2013 the child will wither if she removes her bosom from its mouth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>pagal izhandha<\/strong> \u2013 this signifies the importance of the husband who has been lost (daytime or sUriyan). It is similar to losing someone such as manu or mAndhAthA (these are great kings of the ikshvAku dynasty). When someone gets something of importance, it is said as \u201c<em>pagaRkandEn<\/em>\u201d just like it is said in iraNdAm thiruvandhAdhi pAsuram 81 \u201c<em>pagaRkaNdEn nAraNanaik kaNdEn<\/em>\u201d (I saw SrIman nArAyaNa who is like sun who never sets). Thus losing that <em>pagal<\/em> is very sorrowful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>mEl pAl dhisaippeN<\/strong> \u2013 this gives the importance of the <em>nAyaki<\/em>. When directions are explained, greatness is given to the western direction. The roar from the ocean on the western side is taken as the crying out of the lady in the western direction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ulagaLandha . . . . <\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 her mind is fully focussed on the divine thuLasi garland which sarvESvaran dons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>mAlai nalgiRRaiyellAm<\/strong> \u2013 all those which were given by the evening time ; vyAkyAthA calls this as giving existence and <em>santhAnasApam<\/em> \u2013 in olden times, when kings waged war and won an enemy country, the king of that country would request the conqueror to leave at the least one son to continue the clan. Similarly, the evening time left her complexion behind for her.<\/p>\n<p><strong>mAlai \u2013 sOlvAn . . . .<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0 the northerly wind tries to steal the existence, complexion etc left behind by evening.\u00a0 Similar to torturing those who torture others, the wind tries to steal existence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>panivAdai<\/strong> \u2013 northerly wind which is poisoned. Since it belongs to the clan of <em>prANan<\/em> (vital air in the body; existence), it knows where the vital air is and it tries to steal it. When queried as to what it was doing, it would say \u201cAre we destroying the world?
