The distance is fairly long and the <em>nAyaki<\/em> could get tired. In order to keep her spirits up, the <em>nAyakan<\/em> encouragingly tells her \u2018my house is very near\u2019 so that she gets consoled). As they cross an arid land (desert) he tells her \u201cOnce we cross the arid land, we will reach the cool place which is green\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>nAnilam vAykkoNdu nannIraRa menRu kOdhu koNda<br \/>\n<\/em><em>vEnilanjelvan suvaiththumizh pAlai kadandha ponnE<br \/>\n<\/em><em>kAnilandhOyndhu viNNOr thozhum kaNNan vehkA udhu am pUm<br \/>\n<\/em><em>thEnalanjOlai appAl adhu eppAlaikkum sEmaththadhE<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Word-by-Word Meanings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>ponnE<\/em> \u2013 oh one who looks like lustrous gold!<br \/>\n<em>vEnil<\/em> \u2013 having hot rays<br \/>\n<em>am<\/em> \u2013 beautiful<br \/>\n<em>selvan<\/em> \u2013 sUriyan (sUrya)<br \/>\n<em>nAl nilam<\/em> \u2013 earth, which is classified into four types [of lands]<br \/>\n<em>vAykkoNdu<\/em> \u2013 taking in his mouth well<br \/>\n<em>nal<\/em> \u2013 the essence<br \/>\n<em>nIr<\/em> \u2013 water<br \/>\n<em>aRa<\/em> \u2013 to be removed<br \/>\n<em>menRu<\/em> \u2013 chewing<br \/>\n<em>kOdhu<\/em> \u2013 residual matter<br \/>\n<em>koNda<\/em> \u2013 taking it (again), in the mouth<br \/>\n<em>suvaiththu<\/em> \u2013 sucking on it fully<br \/>\n<em>umizh<\/em> \u2013 spitting it out<br \/>\n<em>pAlai<\/em> \u2013 desert land<br \/>\n<em>kadandha<\/em> \u2013 has been crossed<br \/>\n<em>viNNOr<\/em> \u2013 celestial entities<br \/>\n<em>nilam<\/em> \u2013 on the earth<br \/>\n<em>kAl thOyndhu<\/em> \u2013 standing on their feet firmly<br \/>\n<em>thozhum<\/em> \u2013 worshipping<br \/>\n<em>kaNNan<\/em> \u2013 the noble place where kaNNan has mercifully taken residence<br \/>\n<em>vehkA<\/em> \u2013 thiruvehkA (a noble place in present day kAnchIpuram)<br \/>\n<em>udhu<\/em> \u2013 is nearby<br \/>\n<em>appAladhu<\/em> \u2013 what is seen after that<br \/>\n<em>am<\/em> \u2013 beautiful<br \/>\n<em>pU<\/em> \u2013 having flowers<br \/>\n<em>thEn<\/em> \u2013 with honey dripping<br \/>\n<em>nalam<\/em> \u2013 beautiful<br \/>\n<em>sOlai<\/em> \u2013 orchard<br \/>\n<em>eppAlaikkum<\/em> \u2013 in all states<br \/>\n<em>sEmaththadhu<\/em> \u2013 will be good<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simple Translation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh one with the complexion of gold! sUriyan, who is beautiful and who has fiery rays, started chewing this earth with the help of his hot rays, in his mouth, drank up all the water on earth and spat out the residue which is called as desert land. We have crossed that desert land. The divine land of thiruvehkA, in which kaNNan has taken residence mercifully and which is worshipped by celestial entities with their feet placed firmly on earth, is nearby. After that is the beautiful orchard which is full of beautiful flowers and honey, which will remove all sorrows and give happiness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>nAnilam vAykkoNdu<\/strong> \u2013 sUriyan takes earth which is classified into four types, through his fiery rays which are like his mouth. The four types are \u2013 <em>kuRinji<\/em> (mountainous region), <em>mullai<\/em> (forest region), <em>marudham<\/em> (agricultural region) and <em>neydhal<\/em> (oceans with their shores). <em>thamizhars<\/em> (people living in the land where thamizh is spoken) will add a fifth region, <em>pAlai<\/em> (desert region) and AzhwAr recognises this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>nannIr . . . .<\/strong> \u2013 sUriyan chews these four types of lands and removes water, which is the sustaining force in these lands, from them, thus rendering them as useless residue. This residue became desert land, devoid of any water. The heat of this desert land was so high that even sUriyan could not keep that residue in his mouth and spat it out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>kadandha<\/strong> \u2013 crossing samsAram (materialistic realm). In other words, crossing desert is similar to crossing samsAram.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ponnE<\/strong> \u2013 the <em>nAyakan<\/em> tells the <em>nAyaki<\/em> that he cannot feel the desert when she is with him. He addresses her as <em>ponnE<\/em> to remove her fear and to emphasise his presence to support her. She became fearful looking at the desert land since she thought that it will seize her life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>kAl nilam . . . . <\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 when residents of earth perform <em>yagyams<\/em> (ritual conducted where food is offered to celestial entities in the form of <em>havis<\/em>), the celestial entities will come to earth to accept the <em>havis<\/em>. However, being scared of earth, they will not come inside earth fully. Instead, they will stand at some distance away and accept the <em>havis<\/em>. However, thiruvehkA is such a noble land that even such celestial entities will come full inside, stand with their feet firmly on the ground. It is the place where nithyasUris will circum-ambulate and salute their most desired entity, sarvESvaran.<\/p>\n<p><strong>kaNNan<\/strong> \u2013 sarvESvaran. Where there is affection, shortcomings will not be evident. Shortcomings of earth will not be minded by nithyasUris since their most desired entity has taken residence here, mercifully.<\/p>\n<p><strong>vehkAvudhu<\/strong> \u2013 this is thiruvehkA. The term <em>udhu<\/em> refers to a place which is neither too far nor too close.\u00a0 It is nearby. Is there an instance when a similar incident had occurred? SrI rAma shows ayOdhya to sIthAppirAtti when they were returning from lankA saying as in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 123-55 \u201c<em>EshA sAdhruSyathE ayOdhyA rAjadhAnI pithurmama<\/em> | <em>ayOdhyAn kuru vaidhEhi praNAmAm <\/em>punarAgathA ||\u201d (Oh sIthA! Here is seen the capital city ayOdhyA, of my father. Oh the princess of vidhEha territory! Having duly returned, offer your salutation to ayOdhyA).<\/p>\n<p><strong>appUndhEnalanjOlai appAladhu<\/strong> \u2013 it is a place which has orchards having beautiful flowers and honey. It is composed of several divine lands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>eppAlaikkum sEmaththadhE<\/strong> \u2013 it will remove all the sorrows created by the desert land and offer the protection that we need.<\/p>\n<p><em>svApadhESam<\/em> (distinguished meaning) \u2013 nammAzhwAr knows that samsAram is to be given up and bhagavath vishayam (matters relating to emperumAn) is to be attained. Since the attainment [of SrIvaikuNtam] is getting delayed, he feels distressed.
