He tells her \u201cI did not think that way. Did you not think of going there?\u201d Further he tells her \u201cAfter reaching the stage of being together with the followers of emperumAn, is it not you (AzhwAr) who is thinking of being together with emperumAn? We have understood that you have not realised your greatness. You may not have understood about us. Would we too be like that?\u201d An incident is cited here. Once emperumAnAr (bhagavadh rAmAnujar) had decided to go to thiruvEngadam and mentioned this to his disciples. piLLai uRangAvallidhAsar immediately went to his house. Seeing this, emperumAnAr sent a SrIvaidhNavar to see what was happening there. He returned and told emperumAnAr \u201cHe is reciting the pAsuram \u2018kANginRanagaLum\u2019 with tears in his eyes\u201d. Immediately emperumAnAr told him \u201cShouldn\u2019t you have reminded him about the pAsuram \u2018vaN pU maNivalli yArE piribavardhAm\u2019 and consoled him?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>thiNpUnjudar nudhi nEmiyam selvar viNNAdanaiya<\/em><br \/><em>vaNpU maNivalli yArE piribavar thAm ivaiyO<\/em><br \/><em>kaNpUngamalam karum sudar Adi veNmuththarumbi<\/em><br \/><em>vaNpUnguvaLai madamAn vizhikkinRa mAyidhazhE<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Word-by-Word Meanings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>thiN<\/em> \u2013 being firm<br \/><em>pU<\/em> \u2013 being beautiful<br \/><em>sudar<\/em> \u2013 being splendorous<br \/><em>nudhi<\/em> \u2013 being sharp<br \/><em>nEmi<\/em> \u2013 with the divine disc<br \/><em>am selvar<\/em> \u2013 SrIya: pathi (consort of SrI mahAlakshmi), who has beauty and wealth<br \/><em>viNNAdanaiya<\/em> \u2013 enjoyable, similar to SrIvaikuNtam<br \/><em>vaN<\/em> \u2013 magnanimous<br \/><em>maNi<\/em> \u2013 renowned like a gemstone<br \/><em>valli<\/em> \u2013 Oh leading lady, who is like a creeper plant!<br \/><em>pU<\/em> \u2013 being beautiful<br \/><em>kamalam<\/em> \u2013 lotus<br \/><em>vaN<\/em> \u2013 magnanimous<br \/><em>pU<\/em> \u2013 being beautiful<br \/><em>kuvaLai<\/em> \u2013 blue coloured Indian water-lily<br \/><em>karum sudar<\/em> \u2013 a bluish effulgence<br \/><em>Adi<\/em> \u2013 having<br \/><em>veN muththu<\/em> \u2013 having tears of white pearls<br \/><em>arumbi<\/em> \u2013 shedding them like buds<br \/><em>mA idhazh<\/em> \u2013 having lip similar to tender mango leaves<br \/><em>madamAn<\/em> \u2013 you, who are like an obedient doe<br \/><em>vizhikkinRa<\/em> \u2013 looking, by opening your eyes<br \/><em>ivai<\/em> \u2013 are these<br \/><em>kaNNO<\/em> \u2013 eyes!<br \/><em>ArE<\/em> \u2013 who<br \/><em>piribavardhAm<\/em> \u2013 will separate (from you who are like this)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Simple Translation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh one who is like a beautiful creeper and who is full of enjoyment similar to the <em>paramapadham<\/em> (SrivaikuNtam) of sarvESvaran who is wealthy and has the divine disc which is firm, beautiful, fiery and sharp which are fitting together! Are your eyes, mere eyes? No! They are like lotus flower, like the beautiful water-lily, emitting a bluish splendour. Whitish pearl like tear drops are welling up in those eyes. Your eyelids are like tender mango leaves. Who will separate from you who are opening eyes slowly, like an obedient doe?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>vyAkhyAnam<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>thiNpU<\/strong> \u2013 the nature of divine disc is that it will not step back when it comes to annihilating the enemies of emperumAn\u2019s followers. The term <em>thiN<\/em> refers to firmness while <em>pU<\/em> refers to gentleness. In other words, divine disc is firm when it is a weapon and gentle when it is an ornament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>sudar<\/strong> \u2013 splendorous<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>nudhi<\/strong> \u2013 sharp<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>nEmi<\/strong> \u2013 divine disc, chakraththAzhwAr<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>am selvar<\/strong> \u2013 the beauty and wealth which accrue because of holding such divine disc<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>viNNAdu anaiya &#8230;.<\/strong> \u2013 paramapadham (SrIvaikuNtam) which is as said in chAndhOkya upanishath 8-15-1 \u201c<em>na cha punaravarthathE<\/em>\u201d (there is no returning from that place); only if someone who goes there returns would I separate from you and go to thiruvEngadam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>vaNmai<\/strong> \u2013 quality of being magnanimous. He [AzhwAr] was showered with faultless knowledge and devotion, in his mind, such that he could experience and enjoy. Instead of experiencing and enjoying that alone, he spread it to the whole world as thiruvAimozhi prabandham (divine collection). When he refers to himself in his prabandham, he calls himself as <em>vaNsatakOpan<\/em> (the magnanimous nammAzhwAr).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>pU<\/strong> \u2013 one which gives enjoyment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>maNivalli<\/strong> \u2013 being an ornament to itself. The word <em>valli<\/em> has two connotations here: she is clinging on to the neck of her beloved, just like a creeper will spread on to a supporting pole. Alternatively, while she should be holding on to a supporting pole, she is lying on the ground, being anguished in separation from her leading man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ArE piribavardhAm<\/strong> \u2013 even if I do not have affection to the extent that you have, should I not be considered as one with knowledge?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ivaiyO kaN<\/strong> \u2013 aren\u2019t they eyes which are so beautiful that they have to be protected from evil eyes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>pUm kamalam<\/strong> \u2013 eyes which are beautiful like a lotus flower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>karum sudar Adi<\/strong> \u2013 having an arrogance<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>veN muththu arumbi<\/strong> \u2013 just as a pearl forms in the oyster, sorrow was appearing in the beautiful eyes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>vaN pUnguvaLai<\/strong> \u2013 the magnanimously blossomed purple coloured water lily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>madamAn vizhikkinRa<\/strong> \u2013 even when being united, anticipating separation, fluttering the eyes like a doe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>mA idhazhE<\/strong> \u2013 the word <em>mA<\/em> could refer to either black or reddish colour. If it refers to being black, it would apply to the black eyes while if it refers to being red, it would apply to the reddish lips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>svApadhESam<\/em> \u2013 even when he is together with SrIvaishNavas, AzhwAr is sorrowful anticipating that they would separate from him and go away and wonders as to what will happen should they separate from him.
