It is because he wants to fulfil all our desires. Thus, he is called \u2018puNya:\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The root \u2018pUnj\u2019 \u092a\u0942\u091e\u094d (to purify) loses the \u2018dhIrgha\u2019, and gets the \u2018Nuk\u2019 and \u2018yath\u2019 (\u0923\u0941\u0915\u094d \u092f\u0924\u094d) adjuncts, resulting in this divine name.<\/p>\n<p>Etymology: That bhagavAn himself is called \u2018puNya:\u2019, because he purifies sinful souls.<\/p>\n<p>\u092a\u0941\u0923\u094d\u092f\u0903 \u0938\u094as\u092a\u093f \u092a\u093e\u0924\u0915\u093f\u092a\u093e\u0935\u0928\u0903 |<\/p>\n<p>693) <u>puNyakIrthi:<\/u> (\u092a\u0941\u0923\u094d\u092f\u0915\u0940\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093f\u0903)<\/p>\n<p>Even the glorification of bhagavAn\u2019s divine names is sufficient to purify a soul. Thus, bhagavAn is called \u2018puNyakIrthi:\u2019 \u2013 the one whose glorification is purifying.<\/p>\n<p>This is hailed thus in the vishNu purANa:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cOh maithrEya, the singing of divine names of bhagavAn itself frees a soul from infinite sins, just as shrubs are burnt down by fire\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cEven if a person chants his names involuntarily, yet he\/she shall be freed of all their sins immediately, with all such sins running away like deer in sight of a lion\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThat \u2013 which is accomplished by meditation in krutha yuga, offering oblations in thrEtha yuga, and by physically worshipping bhagavAn in the dhvApara yuga \u2013 shall be accomplished by mere chanting of bhagavAn\u2019s divine names in this kali yuga\u201d, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is for the same reason that knowledgeable men attribute the purifying capacity to the holy hymns that sing the glories of bhagavAn.<\/p>\n<p>Etymology: He whose praises are themselves purifying is called \u2018puNyakIrthi:\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u092a\u0941\u0923\u094d\u092f\u0936\u094d\u0932\u094a\u0915\u094as\u0938\u094d\u0924\u093f \u092f\u0938\u094d\u092f\u0946\u0924\u093f \u092a\u0941\u0923\u094d\u092f\u0915\u0940\u0930\u094d\u0924\u093f\u0903 \u0938 \u0924\u0941 \u0938\u094d\u092e\u0943\u0924\u0903 |<\/p>\n<p>694) <u>anAmaya:<\/u> (\u0905\u0928\u093e\u092e\u092f\u0903)<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the contact with bhagavAn (or his divine names) itself acts as a divine medicine. Hence he is called \u2018anAmaya:\u2019 \u2013 the one who is against all diseases. The disease referred to in this context is this samsAra. This means that bhagavAn cures us of the greatest disease called \u2018samsAra\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Why is this samsAra or material world called a disease? It is because it is deterrent to the divine experience of bhagavAn. Thus, he is called \u2018manOjava:\u2019 \u2013 the one with the speed of mind.<\/p>\n<p>bhagavAn himself says thus: \u201cHe becomes a noble soul instantly\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The vishNu dharma also says thus: \u201cIrrespective of whether the sins accumulated over the past seven births are little or too much, they all are destroyed at the very instant when the person steps into the temple of vishNu\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Etymology: He who acts swiftly in benefitting his devotees is called \u2018manOjava:\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u092d\u0915\u094d\u0924\u093e\u0928\u093e\u0902 \u0938\u092e\u094d\u092a\u0926\u0902 \u0936\u0940\u0918\u094d\u0930\u0902 \u0915\u0930\u094a\u0924\u0940\u0924\u093f \u092e\u0928\u094a\u091c\u0935\u0903 |<\/p>\n<p>696) <u>thIrthakara:<\/u> (\u0924\u0940\u0930\u094d\u0925\u0915\u0930\u0903)<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, bhagavAn creates holy waters such as gangA, pushkara, etc, which are also extremely purifying just upon remembering them or even chanting their names \u2013 just as much as bhagavAn himself! Thus, he is called \u2018thIrthakara:\u2019 \u2013 the creator of holy waters.<\/p>\n<p>Alternately, he is the one who promotes the noble philosophies preached by the vEdhas, smrithis, etc. Thus also he is called \u2018thIrthakara:\u2019 \u2013 the one who enables the creation of various works based on the right philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>This is shown at the end of this same vishNu sahasranAma chapter, where it is said thus: \u201cyOga, Knowledge about the self as well as this material world &#8230; are all born out of janArdhana\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alternately, he is the one who creates steps \u2013 in the form of his incarnations \u2013 to enter into himself, who is otherwise very profound and impossible to access \u2013 just as a deep ocean (meaning, although he is originally very profound, he makes himself accessible to one and all with his incarnations). Thus also, he is called \u2018thIrthakara:\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Etymology: bhagavAn is called \u2018thIrthakara:\u2019, because he is the one who creates holy waters such as gangA, etc., also because he is the one who promotes holy scriptures such as vEdhas and smrithis, and also because he is the one who builds a flight of steps to reach him.<\/p>\n<p>\u0917\u0919\u094d\u0917\u093e\u0926\u093f \u0924\u0940\u0930\u094d\u0925\u0939\u0946\u0924\u0941\u0924\u094d\u0935\u093e\u0924\u094d \u0936\u094d\u0930\u0941\u0924\u093f\u0938\u094d\u092e\u0943\u0924\u094d\u092f\u094a\u0903 \u092a\u094d\u0930\u0935\u0930\u094d\u0924\u0928\u093e\u0924\u094d |<br \/>\u0906\u0924\u094d\u092e\u092a\u094d\u0930\u0935\u0946\u0936\u0938\u094a\u092a\u093e\u0928\u0915\u0943\u0924\u094d\u0924\u094d\u0935\u093e\u0924\u094d \u0924\u0940\u0930\u094d\u0925\u0915\u0930\u0903 \u0938\u094d\u092e\u0943\u0924\u0903 ||<\/p>\n<p>697) <u>vasurEthA:<\/u> (\u0935\u0938\u0941\u0930\u0946\u0924\u093e\u0903)<\/p>\n<p>Thence the glorious krishnAvathAram of bhagavAn is hailed (in more than one hundred ensuing divine names!).<\/p>\n<p>Since bhagavAn himself \u2013 in the form of divine light \u2013 is the material cause for his incarnation, he is called \u2018vasurEthA:\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The word \u2018vasu\u2019 (\u0935\u0938\u0941\u0903) itself is in fact a synonym for light.<\/p>\n<p>The vishNu purANa hails thus: \u201cHe removed two strands of his hair \u2013 one white and one black \u2013 oh great saint&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is said thus in the SAnthi parva of SrI mahAbhAratha: \u201cThey are said to be the strands of my hair (kESa)\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word \u2018kESa\u2019 has already been explained in the previous divine names.<\/p>\n<p>Etymology: The word \u2018vasu\u2019 means light, and \u2018rEtha:\u2019 is known to mean the incarnation for which such light is the cause.
