The thaniyan says that if emperumAn, who is praised by everyone, who is complete in all respect and who harvests devotion in the leelA vibhUthi (materialistic realm), does not show his mercy on the greatness of AzhwAr who is cultivating the crop of <em>parabhakthi, paragyAnam<\/em> and <em>paramabhakthi<\/em> (three states of devotion in which the person has growing desire to be with emperumAn, envisions <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> and cannot sustain himself if emperumAn leaves him, respectively), AzhwAr will manifest his great affection for emperumAn. This debilitating affection which AzhwAr has for emperumAn is incidentally the manifestation that emperumAn is the means for attaining him.<\/p>\n<p>The vyAkyAnam (commentary) for the thaniyan has been mercifully written by piLLailOkam jIyar.<\/p>\n<p>Let us go through the thaniyan and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>ponnulagail vAnavarum pUmagaLum pORRiseyyum<br \/><\/em><em>nannudhaleer nambi naRaiyUrar mannulagil<br \/><\/em><em>en nilaimai kaNdum irangArEyAmAgil<br \/><\/em><em>mannu madalUrvan vandhu<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Word by Word Meanings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>nal nudhaleer<\/em> \u2013 Oh those who have a beautiful forehead!<br \/><em>pon ulagil<\/em> \u2013 in paramapadham (SrIvaikuNtam)<br \/><em>vAnavarum<\/em> \u2013 nithyasUris<br \/><em>pUmagaLum<\/em> \u2013 periya pirAttiyAr (SrI mahAlakshmi)<br \/><em>pORRi seyum<\/em> \u2013 singing thiruppallANdu (wishing <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> well)<br \/><em>nambi naRaiyUrar<\/em> \u2013 thirunaRaiyUr nambi (in archA form (deity) in the divine abode of thirunaRaiyUr) who is complete in all aspects<br \/><em>mannu ulagil<\/em> \u2013 in the permanent bhUlOkam (earth)<br \/><em>en nilaimai kaNdum<\/em> \u2013 even after seeing my condition<br \/><em>irangArE AmAgil<\/em> \u2013 if he does not shower mercy<br \/><em>vandhu<\/em> \u2013 reaching his place<br \/><em>mannum madal Urvan<\/em> \u2013 I will surely ride <em>madal<\/em> (riding a horse made of palm leaves, dragged by children, announcing to the world how her beloved has not responded to her outpourings of love).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>en nilaimai<\/strong> \u2013 the words should be rearranged as <em>nannudhalIr! naRaiyUrar nambi en nilaimai kaNdum irangArEyAmAgil mannu madalUrvan vandhu<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>nal nudhaleer <\/strong>\u2013 Oh those who have a beautiful forehead! This is calling out to other <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/azhwars\/\">AzhwArs<\/a> who are resplendent with devotion towards <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>, just as calling out with the words <em>vAN mugaththIr<\/em> (those who have a resplendent face!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>ponnulagil vAnavarum<\/strong> \u2013 Just as it is mentioned in muNdaka upanishath 2-2-10 \u201c<em>hiraNmayE parE lOke \u201d<\/em> (in the upper world which is golden hued), this refers to nithyasUris who inhabit the golden hued world of SrIvaikuNtam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>pUmagaLum<\/strong> \u2013 periya pirAttiyAr (SrI mahAlakshmi) who resides on a lotus flower; SrIdhEvi who is the epitome of all fragrances in flowers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>pORRi seyum<\/strong> \u2013 singing praises on the well being of <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>. Just as it is mentioned in periya thirumozhi 2-3-7 \u201c<em>bharadhanum thambi saththurukkananum ilakkumanOdu mythiliyum iravu nan pagalum thudhi seyya ninRa rAvaNAndhagandhanai <\/em>\u201d (SrI rAma, the conqueror of rAvaNa, continuously praised during day and night by brothers bharatha, Sathrugna, lakshmaNa and wife sIthA), naRaiyUr nambi is praised by periya pirAtti and nithyasUris. If the text is <em>pUmaganum<\/em>, this will mean \u2013 being praised by brahmA and by dhEvas such as indhra et al who dwell in svarga (heaven). Isn\u2019t it for being praised that <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> had created brahmA!<\/p>\n<p><strong>nambi naRaiyUrar <\/strong>\u2013 the nambi (complete in all aspects) who dwells in naRaiyUr;\u00a0 one who has the divine name of thirunaRaiyUr nambi; one who is complete with qualities such as simplicity, easy approachability etc after reaching thirunaRaiyUr.<\/p>\n<p><strong>en nilaimai kaNdum<\/strong> \u2013 even after seeing the greatness of AzhwAr, who cultivated devotion in him, and who reaped the grains of paramabhakthi etc and became complete. Just as AzhwAr himself had mentioned in thirunedundhANdagam 20 \u201c<em>pErALan pErOdhum peNNai maNmEl perundhavaththaL enRallAl pEsalAmE<\/em>\u201d (This girl has been reciting the divine names of emperumAn. Can we say anything other than saying that she is fortunate, staying on this earth?) he has such greatness. The word <em>en nilaimai<\/em> refers to his greatness. Alternatively, it could be construed as AzhwAr\u2019s condition which is pitiable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>mannulagil ennilaimai kaNdum <\/strong>\u2013 even after seeing my pitiable condition on this everlasting earth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>mannulagil<\/strong> \u2013 if this world were to get destroyed soon, my troubles also would have ended. But it is not like that. This world appears to last forever.<\/p>\n<p><strong>en nilaimai kaNdum<\/strong> \u2013 her position is similar to that which has been mentioned in periya thirumozhi 5-5-6 \u201c<em>thAdhAdu vanamAlai thArAnO enRenRE thaLarndhAL<\/em>\u201d (she became enervated after repeatedly asking whether he (emperumAn) will not give her the divine garland which has pollens).<\/p>\n<p><strong>irangArEyAmAgil<\/strong> \u2013 even in this condition if he says as in <a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/2016\/03\/thiruvaimozhi-2-4-5-ival-irap-pagal\/\">thiruvAimozhi 2-4-5<\/a> \u201c<em>vaNdu thivaLum thaNNandhuzhAy kodIr<\/em>\u201d (you are not giving me the cool, beautiful thuLasi garland around which beetles are humming) or as mentioned in <a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/2016\/03\/thiruvaimozhi-2-4-3-irakka-manaththodu\/\">thiruvAimozhi 2-4-3<\/a> \u201c<em>irakkamezhIr<\/em>\u201d (you are not taking pity on her condition) . . . .<\/p>\n<p><strong>mannu madalUrvan vandhu<\/strong> \u2013 as long as he [emperumAn] exists, my <em>madal<\/em> also will certainly exist.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0madalUrvan<\/strong> \u2013 I will destroy all his [emperumAn\u2019s] qualities which are celebrated everywhere, with my <em>madal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This prabandham ends with AzhwAr\u2019s threat that he will engage with <em>madal<\/em> to manifest his deep affection such that emperumAn will accept him. Will this attempt be classified as AzhwAr taking efforts on his own, to attain emperumAn?\u00a0 No, it will not. All these will only be classified as AzhwAr\u2019s anguish at not attaining emperumAn, knowing the greatness of emperumAn and knowing also that only emperumAn is the means for attaining him.
