When some one questions &#8220;You are asking us to give up worldly attachments. But we have been used to it since time immemorial. How we can we give them up now?&#8221;. <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">nammAzhwAr<\/a> replies through this pAsuram &#8220;when you understand the defects of the worldly aspects, they can be given up&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>pAsuram<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>\u0bae\u0bbf\u0ba9\u0bcd\u0ba9\u0bbf\u0ba9\u0bcd \u0ba8\u0bbf\u0bb2\u0bc8\u0baf\u0bbf\u0bb2&#8211;\u0bae\u0ba9\u0bcd\u0ba9\u0bc1\u0baf\u0bbf\u0bb0\u0bcd \u0b86\u0b95\u0bcd\u0b95\u0bc8\u0b95\u0bb3\u0bcd<br \/>\n\u0b8e\u0ba9\u0bcd\u0ba9\u0bc1\u0bae\u0bcd \u0b87\u0b9f\u0ba4\u0bcd\u0ba4\u0bc1 \u0b87\u0bb1\u0bc8&#8211;\u0b89\u0ba9\u0bcd\u0ba9\u0bc1\u0bae\u0bbf\u0ba9\u0bcd \u0ba8\u0bc0\u0bb0\u0bc7<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>minnin nilaiyila mannuyir AkkaigaL<\/em><br \/>\n<em>ennum idaththu iRai unnumin nIrE<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Word-by-Word meanings (based on <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/03\/22\/vadhi-kesari-azhagiya-manavala-jiyar-english\/\">vAdhi kEsari azhagiya maNavALa jIyar<\/a>&#8216;s 12000 padi)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>uyir &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">AthmA<\/a> (soul)<br \/>\nman &#8211; filled with likeable aspects<br \/>\nAkkaigaL &#8211; bodies which are the cause for bondage<br \/>\nminnin &#8211; more than a lightning<br \/>\nnilai &#8211; state of appearing and disappearing immediately<br \/>\nila &#8211; not having<br \/>\nennum idaththu &#8211; as explained in<br \/>\nnIrE &#8211; yourself<br \/>\niRai &#8211; the master<br \/>\nunnumin &#8211; meditate upon him<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simple transalation (based on <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/03\/22\/vadhi-kesari-azhagiya-manavala-jiyar-english\/\">vAdhi kEsari azhagiya maNavALa jIyar<\/a>&#8216;s 12000 padi)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">jIvAthmA<\/a> accepts many bodies (birth after birth) which are liked by him. But these bodies are so impermanent that they are not even having the permanent nature of a lightning which appears and disappears in a flash. Seeing this, you meditate upon the supreme lord who is the master.<\/p>\n<h3>vyAkyAnams (commentaries)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Highlights from <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/04\/14\/thirukkurugaippiran-pillan-english\/\">thirukkurukaippirAn piLLAn<\/a>&#8216;s vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AzhwAr says when one analyses and understands the impermanent nature of the body etc which are related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">jIvAthmA<\/a>, then those impermanent aspects can be easily given up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highlights from <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/14\/nanjiyar-english\/\">nanjIyar<\/a>&#8216;s vyAkyAnam<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/16\/nampillai-english\/\">nampiLLai<\/a>&#8216;s vyAkyAnam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highlights from <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/10\/05\/periyavachan-pillai-english\/\">periyavAchchAn piLLai<\/a>\u2018s vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/16\/nampillai-english\/\">nampiLLai<\/a>&#8216;s vyAkyAnam.<\/p>\n<p>Also, for the singular usage of uyir (<a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">jIvAthmA<\/a> &#8211; soul) and plural usage of AkkaigaL (sarIram &#8211; bodies), periyavAchchAn piLLai quotes bhagavath gIthA 2.22 &#8220;<em>vAsAmsi jIrNAni<\/em>&#8221; slOkam, where <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\">emperumAn<\/a> explains that just as a person acquires new clothes when the old ones are unusable, the <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">AthmA<\/a>\u00a0too will acquire a new body when the old one becomes unusable (at the time of death). So, the same <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">AthmA<\/a>, continually acquires a new body birth after birth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highlights from <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/16\/nampillai-english\/\">nampiLLai<\/a>&#8216;s vyAkyAnam as documented by <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/17\/vadakku-thiruveedhi-pillai-english\/\">vadakkuth thiruvIdhip piLLai<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>minnin nilaiyila<\/em> &#8211; In the case of lightning we, at the least, know that it exists only for a moment. It is both insignificant and impermanent. But, the body, even though impermanent, creates an illusion in the mind that it is permanent and leads to all kinds of troubles. Just like when someone places his hand on a snake thinking that it resembles sandalwood paste which has beautiful fragrance, coolness, softness etc and if he is informed that he is keeping his hand on a snake, he cannot resist taking his hand away (seeing the danger). Similarly, when the real defects of this temporary body (and material realm) such as insignificance and impermanence are highlighted, one can easily give it up.<\/li>\n<li><em>mannuyir AkkaigaL<\/em> &#8211; the bodies in which the <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">AthmA<\/a> is well seated; it is also explained as the different bodies pursued by the eternal <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">jIvAthmA<\/a>. nampiLLai gives a beautiful example &#8211; &#8220;<em>thiRandhu kidandha vAsalgaL thORum nuzhaindhu thiriyum padhArththam pOlEyiRE ivan thirivadhu<\/em>&#8221; (Just like a dog that will enter into any house that has an open door and come out, <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">AthmA<\/a> enters so many bodies through the cycle of birth and death). Here, the usage of singular\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">AthmA<\/a> is considered as a representative for all <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">AthmA<\/a>s which pursue many bodies.<\/li>\n<li><em>ennum idaththu<\/em> &#8211; the defects are so much &#8211; even more than <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a>&#8216;s auspicious qualities.<\/li>\n<li>nIrE &#8211; you can understand it just by observing yourself (since the impermanence is quite obvious).
