Is this all that emperumAn does for his followers? Till such time that they are here, without any regulations about what he does, emperumAn carries out all the protective actions; if the follower leaves this body, he gives him <em>svarga<\/em> (heaven); more distinguished than these, he also grants <em>paramapadham<\/em> (SrIvaikuNtam); even after granting all these, isn\u2019t he the entity who feels sad that he has not done anything for his follower? AzhwAr thus explains in this pAsuram, the meaning that he had given in the previous pAsuram.<\/p>\n<p>Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>vEndharAy viNNavarAy viNNagaith thaNNaLiyAy<\/em><br \/>\n<em>mAndharAy mAdhAy maRRellAmAy sArndhavarkkuth<\/em><br \/>\n<em>than ARRAn nEmiyAn mAlvaNNan thAn kodukkum<\/em><br \/>\n<em>pinnAl thAn seyyum pidhir<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Word for Word Meanings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>nEmiyAn \u2013 one who has the divine disc in his hand<br \/>\nmAl vaNNan \u2013 emperumAn who is the epitome of affection<br \/>\nsArndhavarkku \u2013 towards those who attain him<br \/>\nvEndhar Ay \u2013 being kings<br \/>\nviNNavar Ay \u2013 being dhEvas (celestial entities, who bestow rain)<br \/>\nviN Agi \u2013 being the <em>svarga<\/em> (heaven) which gives enjoyment<br \/>\nthaNNaLi Ay \u2013 being the one who grants his grace (in heaven)<br \/>\nmAndhar Ay \u2013 being relatives<br \/>\nmAdhA Ay \u2013 being the one who gives all the benefits given by a mother<br \/>\nmaRRu ellAm Ay \u2013 being the one who carries out all the other types of benefits<\/p>\n<p>(even after bestowing all these benefits)<br \/>\nthan ARRAn \u2013 being not satisfied internally<br \/>\nthAn kodukkum \u2013 giving (everything) himself<br \/>\npinnAl \u2013 despite giving all these<br \/>\nthAn seyyum pidhir \u2013 he will give the distinguished <em>mOksham<\/em> (SrIvaikuNtam)<\/p>\n<h3><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>vEndharAy<\/strong> \u2013 being like kings who will function such that the strong people do not harm the weaklings, so long as they are in this world. Has it not been said that kings are denomination of bhagavAn, as in the saying \u201c<em>nAvishNu: prithivIpathi:<\/em>\u201d (king is not different from vishNu) and in <a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/2017\/02\/thiruvaimozhi-4-4-8-thiruvudai-mannarai\/\">thiruvAimozhi 4-4-8<\/a> \u201c<em>thiruvudai mannaraik kANil thirumAlaik kaNdEnEyennum<\/em>\u201d (if she looks at the king, she will say that she has seen thirumAL (emperumAn))?<\/p>\n<p><strong>viNNavarAy<\/strong> \u2013 Is it not true that even if kings rule the land properly, if there is no water resource, there will not be any benefit to the people? Hence, (emperumAn functions as) being the celestial entities who are the cause for rain which provides water resources to people in the world. vyAsa said \u201c<em>sarva ijyAScha krishNa:<\/em>\u201d (all celestial entities are krishNa).<\/p>\n<p><strong>viNNAgi<\/strong> \u2013 being <em>svarga<\/em> (heaven) which is distinct from earth and which is the benefit for deeds carried out on earth such as <em>jyOthishtOma<\/em> (a type of ritual) etc. nammAzhwAr too mercifully said in <a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/2016\/11\/thiruvaimozhi-3-10-7-thunbamum-inbamum\/\">thiruvAimozhi 3-10-7<\/a> \u201c<em>iniya nalvAn suvargangaLumAy<\/em>\u201d (being the sweet paramapadham and <em>svarga<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>thaNNaLiyAy<\/strong> \u2013 being the grace showered by indhra et al celestial entities. The opinion here is that it is only emperumAn who grants happiness through indhra et al in <em>svarga<\/em>. emperumAn said himself in <a href=\"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/7-22\/\">SrI bhagavath gIthA 7-22<\/a> \u201c<em>labhathE cha thatha: kAmAn mayaiva vihithAn hi thAn<\/em>\u201d ((AthmA) attains all the desires which are granted only by me through celestial entities).<\/p>\n<p><strong>mAndharAy<\/strong> \u2013 being relatives and friends who provide help. subAlOpanishath says \u201c<em>suhruth gathir nArAyaNa:<\/em>\u201d (attain nArAyaNa who is good at heart).<\/p>\n<p><strong>mAdhAy<\/strong> \u2013 being the mother who gave birth to. This applies to father too. Just as it is mentioned in the saying \u201c<em>sahasram hi pithur mAthA<\/em>\u201d (being thousand times greater than father and mother) mentioning mother is also applicable to father. periya thiruvandhAdhi 5 says \u201c<em>peRRa thAy nIyE piRappiththa thandhai nI<\/em>\u201d (you are the mother who gave birth to and the father who was responsible for the birth) and subAlOpanishath \u201c<em>mAthA pithA nArAyaNa<\/em>\u201d (nArAyaNa is the mother and the father).<\/p>\n<p><strong>mAdhAy<\/strong> \u2013 also could\u00a0 be construed as being beautiful. <em>mAdhu<\/em> \u2013 beauty. It is emperumAn\u2019s beauty which the AthmA enjoys among all the beautiful things enjoyed.Hasn\u2019t emperumAn himself said in bhagavath gIthA \u201c<em>yadh yadh vibhUthimath sathvam SrImadhUrgithamEva vA<\/em> I <em>thaththadhEvAgachcha thvam mama thEjOmSa sambhavam<\/em>\u00a0 II \u201d (know that all the materials which are full of opulence, which are beautiful, which are firm are born out of my radiance) and nammAzhwAr in <a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/2015\/05\/thiruvaimozhi-1-2-7-adangu-ezhil\/\">thiruvAimozhi 1-2-7<\/a> \u201c<em>adangezhil sampaththu adangakkaNdu Isan adangezhil ahdhenRu adanguga uLLE<\/em>\u201d \u00a0(after looking at all the beautiful wealth of emperumAn, one should realise that he is also one among his wealth and become humble)!<\/p>\n<p><strong>maRRellAmAy<\/strong> \u2013 being other relatives, means and benefit as mentioned in \u201c<em>bhrAthA nivAsa: SaraNam<\/em>\u201d (surrendering to my elder brother) and periya thiruvandhAdhi 5 \u201c<em>maRRaiyArAvArum nI pEsil<\/em>\u201d (if I have to list out all the benefits that I have obtained from you, you are the AchArya (teacher) too)<\/p>\n<p>For whom is emperumAn like these?<\/p>\n<p><strong>sArndhavarkku<\/strong> \u2013 he is like these for those who attain him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>than ARRAn<\/strong> \u2013 being dissatisfied with himself for not having done enough for his followers despite doing all these. Isn\u2019t he the entity who says as in mahAbhAratham \u201c<em>gOvindhEthi yadhAgrandhath krUshNA mAm dhUravAsinam<\/em> I <em>ruNam pravrudhdhamiva mE hrudhayAnnApasappathi <\/em>\u00a0II \u201d (the crying out of dhraupadhi who cried out <em>gOvindhA<\/em> when I was at a far away distance is not leaving my heart just like a loan which has kept accruing interest)!<\/p>\n<p><strong>nEmiyAn<\/strong> \u2013 one who manifests himself with his divine disc which removes enemies and which enables his followers to enjoy him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>mAl vaNNan thAn kodukkum<\/strong> \u2013 being the epitome of affection, one who keeps giving benefits like the above despite saying that he has not given anything.<\/p>\n<p><strong>pinnAl thAn seyyum pidhir<\/strong> \u2013 even after giving everything on earth as well in heaven etc, he gives <em>paramapadham<\/em> to his followers. <em>pidhir<\/em><strong> \u2013 <\/strong>remaining. In other words, he will give after he has enjoyed. After emperumAn has enjoyed the chEthana (sentient entity) and is deeply immersed in the ocean of nectar, the chEthana will be very joyous seeing the happiness of emperumAn and in turn will immerse himself in emperumAn\u2019s ocean of nectar. Just as it is mentioned in thaiththirIya upanishaths \u201c<em>aham annam aham annam<\/em>\u201d ISvara enjoys chEthana \u00a0as his food and is joyous. Looking at that joy, chEthana will enjoy that joy as the <em>SEshabhUtham<\/em> (remaining food after partaking by emperumAn). vEdhAntha dhEsika said of this as \u201c<em>bhungkthE svabhOgamakhilam pathibhOga SEsham<\/em>\u201d (muktha (soul liberated from samsAram) enjoys as the remainder of emperumAn\u2019s enjoyment)<\/p>\n<p>It is proper for emperumAn to grant mOksham for his follower. But is it proper on his part to grant happiness in this world and <em>svarga<\/em>? Since he is <em>sakalapalapradhan<\/em>\u00a0 (one who grants all benefits), it is not wrong on his part to grant other benefits too, based on the desire of his follower.
