According to SrI vishNu purANam 6-8-13 these are \u201c<em>sargaScha prathisargaScha vamSam manvantharANi cha <\/em>I <em>vamSanucharitham kruthsnam mayAthra thava kIrthitham<\/em> II\u201d (creation, annihilation, lineage, period of manu and narratives of lineages were narrated by me to you).<\/p>\n<p><strong>pAttum<\/strong> \u2013 starting from kings and going up to sarvESvara, the songs which were sung about the greatness of each. Don\u2019t purANas sing extensively about celestial entities, <em>pithrus<\/em> (forefathers), kings as mentioned in mAthsya purANam \u201c<em>agnE: Sivasya mahAthmyam<\/em>\u201d?<\/p>\n<p><strong>muRaiyum<\/strong> \u2013 the order of lineages and <em>manvantharam<\/em> (manu\u2019s period). parASara bhagavAn called this \u201c<em>vamSamanvantharANi cha<\/em>\u201d (lineage and manvantharam).<\/p>\n<p><strong>padu kadhaiyum<\/strong> \u2013 <em>srushti <\/em>(creation), <em>pralayam<\/em> (annihilation), history of lineages which happened earlier. parASara maharishi called this \u201c<em>sargaScha prathisargaScha vamSAnucharitham kruthsnam<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>palporuLum<\/strong> \u2013 apart from these, various other meanings which are explained in purANas regarding activities based on <em>varNa<\/em> (four classifications based on qualities and profession) and <em>ASrama<\/em> (status in societal life), determination of terrestrial movement etc.<\/p>\n<p>This is the interpretation of periyavAchchAn piLLai. The interpretation of appiLLai is:<\/p>\n<p><strong>pAttum muRaiyum<\/strong> \u2013 prose and proper music which sings about prose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>padu kadhaiyum<\/strong> \u2013 ithihAsas (epics) which talk about old narratives describing how they happened.<\/p>\n<p><strong>pal poruLum<\/strong> \u2013 various meanings described by purANas starting with <em>sargaScha prathisargaScha<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ittiya thIyum<\/strong> \u2013 agni (fire) which was created in order to exhibit the other elements (ether, water, wind and earth) through the method of\u00a0<em>panchIkaraNam<\/em> (homogenisation). Homogenisation is the method by which <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> split each of the elements into eight parts, retaining four parts in the mother element and mixing each of the other four parts with each of the other four elements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>iru visumbum<\/strong> \u2013 sky (ether) which is bigger than the other four elements since it pervades them. Mentioning about these two elements (<em>agni<\/em> (fire) and<em> AkASam <\/em>(sky)) is representative of the other three elements and the materials which are resultant from them.<\/p>\n<p>In periyavAchchAn piLLai\u2019s interpretation, all these are <em>vAchyam<\/em> (meanings of words) and what follow are the <em>vAchagams<\/em> (words). In appiLLai\u2019s interpretation, <em>Ittiya thIyum iruvisumbum<\/em> alone is meaning of words. Those which precede and succeed this are words.<\/p>\n<p><strong>kEtta manuvum . . . .dhaRpu<\/strong> \u2013 Just as mentioned in thaiththirIya samhithai 2-2 \u201c<em>yadhyai kincha manuavadhath thath bhEshajam<\/em>\u201d (whatever has been mentioned by manu is medicine), manusmruthi which has been quoted in vEdhas, and the four vEdhas themselves which have been taught by <em>AchArya<\/em> (teacher) and heard by <em>Sishya<\/em> (due to which they are called as <em>Sruthi<\/em>) have the nature of total truth since they have been created by the <em>AScharya bhUtha<\/em> (amazing entity, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>) through his <em>sankalpa<\/em> (will).
