But rudhra should be considered on a par with vishNu. During the time of <em>amruthamadhanam<\/em> (churning of ocean for nectar) was it not Siva who swallowed the <em>AlahAla<\/em> poison which would, otherwise, have killed the dhEvas, thus protecting them?\u201d AzhwAr responds in this pAsuram saying \u201cwould you consider as protector someone like Siva who, after having solemnly vowed to bANAsura when he approached Siva to protect him, ran away from the battlefield when war broke out with krishNa?\u201d and brings clarity in them.<\/p>\n<p>Let us go thorugh the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>avar ivar enRillai anangavEL thAdhaikku<\/em><br \/>\n<em> evarum edhirillai kaNdIr uvarik<\/em><br \/>\n<em> kadal nanjamuNdAn kadanenRu vANaRku<\/em><br \/>\n<em> udaninRu thORRAn orungu<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Word for Word Meanings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>avar ivar enRu illai \u2013 there is no distinction between knowledgeable and ignorant people<br \/>\nanangavEL thAdhaikku \u2013 kaNNapirAn (krishNa), the father of manmatha (cupid)<br \/>\nevarum \u2013 no one<br \/>\nedhir illai kaNdIr \u2013 see, no capability to oppose him<br \/>\nuvarikkadal nanjam uNdAn \u2013 Siva, who swallowed the poison which emanated from salty ocean<br \/>\nvANaRku \u2013 to bANAsura<br \/>\nkadan enRu \u2013 saying \u201cit is my duty to protect you\u201d<br \/>\nudan ninRu \u2013 standing together with him in the battle (against emperumAn)<br \/>\norungu thORRAn \u2013 lost and fled<\/p>\n<h3><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>anangavEL thAdhaikku avar ivar enRillai evarum edhirillai kaNdIr<\/strong> \u2013 Have you seen that there is none, among both the knowledgeable and the ignorant without any distinction, who can be called as comparable to sarvESvaran who is praised as <em>sAkshAth manmatha manmatha:<\/em> (he is the most beautiful among all the beautiful persons) and who is the father of manmatha who is considered as the most beautiful?<\/p>\n<p><strong>anagavEL thAdhaikku evarum edhirillai<\/strong> \u2013 just as there is none comparable to emperumAn in beauty, have you noticed that there is none comparable to him in maniliness too?<\/p>\n<p><strong>avar ivar<\/strong> \u2013 the terms <em>avar<\/em> and <em>ivar <\/em>are normally used to refer to someone who is at a distance and who is closeby, respectively. Here, the term <em>avar<\/em> refers to brahmA, rudhra et al who are at a great distance compared to the ordinary chEthanas (sentient entities) in terms of knowledge and <em>ivar<\/em> refers to normal chEthanas. The meaning implied is that just as the normal chEthanas cannot be compared to emperumAn in terms of <em>gyAna, Sakthi<\/em> etc (knowledge, ability etc), in the same way brahmA, rudhra et al who have abundance of these qualities cannot be compared to emperumAn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>evarum edhirillai kaNdIr<\/strong> \u2013 rudhra, who you consider to be superior, as well as other deities who are under him, cannot match emperumAn, have you seen this? The implied opinion here is that in case they have not seen, they can see, even as AzhwAr shows them.<\/p>\n<p>When they (the devotees of Siva) ask him \u201cHow can you say that there is none? During the churning of ocean for extracting nectar, Siva had consumed the <em>AlahAla<\/em> poison and thus protected the dhEvas; wouldn\u2019t he be comparable?\u201d AzhwAr mercifully explains further . . . .<\/p>\n<p><strong>uvarikkadal nanjam uNdAn<\/strong> \u2013 SAsthras say that it was because\u00a0 of emperumAn\u2019s significant presence at that time (as <em>antharyAmi<\/em> of Siva), that Siva was able to consume that poison.<\/p>\n<p><strong>kadan enRu vANaRku<\/strong> \u2013 in front of all the people in the court assembly, Siva had solemnly told bANAsura\u00a0 \u201cprotecting you is my duty\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>udan ninRu<\/strong> \u2013 standing together with bANAsura and engaging in battle against emperumAn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>udan ninRu thORRAn<\/strong> &#8211; \u00a0Siva lost the war, in the presence of bANAsura as the witness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>orungu thORRAn<\/strong> \u2013 he lost without any distinction between himself and bANAsura.
