Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>vagaiyAl madhiyAdhu maNkoNdAy maRRum<\/em><br \/>\n<em> vagaiyAL varuvadhu onRuNdE vagaiyAl<\/em><br \/>\n<em> vayiram kuzhaiththuNNum mAvali thAnennum<\/em><br \/>\n<em> vayira vazhakkozhiththAy maRRu<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Word for Word Meanings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>madhiyAdhu \u2013 not considering this as a huge task<br \/>\nvagaiyAl \u2013 in the path of begging for alms<br \/>\nmaN koNdAy \u2013 you took the worlds from mahAbali (a king who had\u00a0 seized all the worlds from indhra)<br \/>\nmaRRum \u2013 moreover<br \/>\nvayiram \u2013 gem like diamond<br \/>\nvagaiyAl \u2013 with the help of medicines<br \/>\nkuzhaiththu \u2013 softening it<br \/>\nuNNum \u2013 one who eats it<br \/>\n(adhanAl) thAn ennum \u2013 one who has ego due to that and thinks of himself as bhagavAn<br \/>\nmAvali \u2013 mahAbali\u2019s<br \/>\nvayiram vazhakku \u2013 the inimical relationship<br \/>\nozhiththAy \u2013 you removed<br \/>\nvagaiyAl \u2013 due to such activities of yours<br \/>\nvaruvadhu onRu uNdE \u2013 is there any resultant benefit for you? (you are doing all these for the sake of your followers)<\/p>\n<h3><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>vagaiyAl maN koNdAy<\/strong> \u2013 since mahAbali had the quality of magnanimity, he should not be destroyed; at the same time, indhra (head of celestial entities) has to get back his lost kingdoms. After analysing the situation, you transformed yourself to the form of a mendicant, measured the worlds through a good means and returned the redeemed worlds to indhra, so that he could reside in his dwelling place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>vagailyAl<\/strong> \u2013 this refers to the form of the dwarf, vAmana, his sweet talk etc which softened the heart of the asura mahAbali so that he would give the three steps of land asked for by the dwarf.<\/p>\n<p><strong>madhiyAdhu maN koNdAy<\/strong> \u2013 instead of considering it as a huge task, you performed the activity of measuring of the worlds in an effortless manner. There are some who construe this as <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> not thinking about his greatness and transforming himself into a dwarf. appiLLai, one of the vyAkyAthAs (commentators) of this prabandham considered that emperumAn did not think about the demonic nature of mahAbali as something to be considered at all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>maRRu<\/strong> \u2013 was it only to do something good for indhra that <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> transformed himself into a dwarf? Was it not for doing a benefit for mahAbali? Did he not do good for mahAbali considering the demon as his follower?<\/p>\n<p><strong>vagaiyAl vayiram kuzhaiththuNNum mAvali<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thirumazhisai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> refers to the decorations that mahAbali carried out to boost his ego. If someone were to take diamond directly, it would lead to death. Hence, mahAbali mixed diamond in small portion with several medicinal materials and consumed it to nurture his physical body.<\/p>\n<p><strong>mAvali thAn ennum vayira vazhakku ozhiththAy<\/strong> \u2013 you removed the ego of such mahAbali, making him to bow down his head to you, kept your divine foot on his head and stabilised him. <em>vayiram<\/em> \u2013 diamond. v<em>ayira vazhakku <\/em>\u2013 the way by which one becomes an enemy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>thAn ennum vayira vazhakku<\/strong> \u2013 it is implied here that while outwardly mahAbali appeared to be a devotee [of <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>], since he had lot of ego, he behaved like an enemy of emperumAn. Hasn\u2019t emperumAn himself mercifully mentioned \u201c<em>AgyAchchEdhI mama dhrOhi madhbhakthOpi na vaishNava:<\/em>\u201d (one who goes against my order is one who commits treachery against me even if he is my devotee, he is not a vaishNava)!<\/p>\n<p><strong>maRRum vagaiyAl varuvadhu onRu uNdE<\/strong> \u2013 apart from granting benefits to your followers, is there any benefit for you [<a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>] by carrying out all these deeds?
