This being the case, could you say that attaining him is simple?\u2019 by those who are following other means to attain him. AzhwAr responds to them through this pAsuram.<\/p>\n<p>Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>vIdAkkum peRRIyaRiyAdhu mey varuththik<\/em><br \/>\n<em> kUdAkki ninRuNdu koNduzhalvIr! vIdAkkum<\/em><br \/>\n<em> meypporuLdhAn vEdha mudhaRporuLdhAn viNNavarkku<\/em><br \/>\n<em> naRporuLdhAn nArAyaNan<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Word for Word Meanings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>vIdu Akkum peRRI aRiyAdhu \u2013 not knowing the path to attain mOksham (liberation)<br \/>\nmey \u2013 physical body<br \/>\nvaruththi \u2013 creating distress through fasting etc<br \/>\nkUdu Akki \u2013 making it very much like a skeleton, without any strength<br \/>\nninRu \u2013 carrying out penance like this for a long time<br \/>\nuNdu koNdu \u2013 eating thereafter<br \/>\nuzhalvIr \u2013 Oh those who are toiling!<br \/>\nvIdu Akkum \u2013 one who can grant mOksham (liberation)<br \/>\nmey poruLdhAn \u2013 he is certainly a means<br \/>\nvEdham mudhal poruLdhAn \u2013 he has been shown as the supreme being by sacred texts<br \/>\nviNNavarkku \u2013 for nithyasUris (permanent dwellers of SrIvaikuNtam)<br \/>\nnal poruLdhAn \u2013 the enjoyable entity<br \/>\nnArAyaNan \u2013 it is only <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">SrIman nArAyaNa<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>vIdAkkum peRRi aRiyAdhu<\/strong> \u2013 without knowing which (type of) means will grant liberation. <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thirumazhisai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> feels amazed that people are considering the insentient type of means such as karmayOgam (path of carrying out ordained deeds) for attaining liberation instead of knowing that the supreme being himself is the means.<\/p>\n<p><strong>mey varuththikkUdAkki<\/strong> \u2013 punishing the body, while carrying out penance, and making it appear like a skeleton. Aren\u2019t they the people who believe as said in \u201c<em>thapasA\u2019nASakEna<\/em>\u201d (through penance, by fasting)!<\/p>\n<p><strong>ninRu<\/strong> \u2013 remaining like this for a long time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>uNdu<\/strong> \u2013 enjoying the benefit of the penance for sometime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>koNdu uzhalvIr<\/strong> \u2013Oh those who wander about thinking that by carrying out karmayOgam for some more time, you can attain mOksham! If the text is <em>konRu uzhalvIr<\/em> the meaning will change as those who wander by killing yourself!<\/p>\n<p><strong>aRiyAdhu mey varuththi . . . .uzhalvIr<\/strong> \u2013 As mentioned in \u201c<em>vammin pulavIr! Num mey varuththik kai seydhu uymiinO<\/em>\u201d for carrying out kainkaryam (service to <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>), if one should exert oneself through physical efforts it will be a means for uplifting oneself as well as being sweet to carry out as said in <a href=\"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/9-2\/\">SrI bhagavath gIthA 9-2<\/a> \u201c<em>susukam karththum<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thirumazhisai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> says that it is foolhardy to starve the body and make it into a skeleton, thinking that it is the means to attain liberation.<\/p>\n<p>When told \u201cAlright, we do not know what is the means for liberation. Since you know it, why don\u2019t you mercifully mention it to us\u201d, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thirumazhisai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> says&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>vIdAkkum mey poruLdhAn nArAyaNan<\/strong> \u2013 his name will announce that he is the means for liberation. Haven\u2019t you heard of his name! AzhwAr is asking whether they have not heard of the authentic source \u201c<em>nAraSabdhEna jIvAnAm samUha: prOchyathE bhudhai<\/em>: I <em>gathirAlambanam thasya thEna nArAyaNa; smrutha<\/em>: II\u201d(the sound [word] nArAyaNa denotes the collection of <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">jIvAthmAs<\/a>. Since he is the means as well as the end result for those jIvAthmAs, he is called as <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">nArAyaNa<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>vIdAkkum mey poruLdhAn<\/strong> \u2013 even the karmas (deeds carried out as per sacred texts) will bear fruit for those who carry them only if they make nArAyaNa happy. Thus these deeds are not the direct means to attain him. Only nArAyaNa is the direct means who grants the end results. Thus, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thirumazhisai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> says, get rid of the thought that these deeds are the means and carry out service to him.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if there is any other proof that he is the means for liberation, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thirumazhisai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> says&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>vEdha mudhaRporuLdhAn<\/strong> \u2013 quotations from purusha sUktham and nArAyaNa sUktham are given, as mentioned below:<\/p>\n<p>nArAyaNa sUktham \u201c<em>nArAyaNam &#8230;&#8230; pArAyaNam<\/em>\u201d (nArAyaNa is the highest means)<\/p>\n<p>purusha sUktham \u201c<em>uthAmruthathvasyESAna:<\/em>\u201d (only the supreme being is the lord for mOksham)<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>amruthasyaisha sEthu<\/em>\u201d (he is the bridge for reaching mOksham ).<\/p>\n<p>Thus, it is nArAyaNa who is mentioned in vEdhas as the primary means for attaining mOksha.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thirumazhisai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> is further asked, \u201cIf he is the means, is there any other object which is attained and enjoyed?\u201d\u00a0 He says&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>viNNavrakkum naRporuLdhAn<\/strong> \u2013 he is the entity who is enjoyed by the nithyasUris in SrIvaikuNtam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>vEdha mudhaRporuLdhAn viNNavarkku naRporuLdhAn<\/strong> \u2013 vEdhas clearly state, as in SrI vishNu sUktham \u201c<em>thadh vishNO<\/em>:<em> paramam padham sadhA paSyanthi sUraya:\u00a0 <\/em>\u201d (that is SrIvaikuNtam; the nithyasUris keep looking at him constantly); as in purusha sUktham uththara bhAgam (end part) \u201c<em>yO dhEvEbya Athapathi<\/em> I <em>yO dhEvAnAm purOhitha<\/em>: \u201d (one who remains for nithyasUris and one who is the object of attainment from time immemorial&#8230;); and as said in subhAlO\u2019panishath \u201cS<em>araNam gathir nArAyaNa<\/em>: \u201d (it is nArAyaNa who is both means and the object of attainment).<\/p>\n<p>When asked who is he who remains as both means and object of attainment, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thirumazhisai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> says &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>nArAyaNan<\/strong> \u2013 it is nArAyaNa.
