While the pAsuram has been addressed to emperumAn, in line with the earlier and the succeeding pAsurams, the people of the world are the real target.<\/p>\n<p>Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>madhiththAy pOy nAngin madhiyAdhAr pOy vIzha<\/em><br \/>\n<em> madhiththAy madhikOL viduththAy madhiththAy<\/em><br \/>\n<em> madukkidandha mA mudhalai kOL viduppAn Azhi<\/em><br \/>\n<em> vidaRkiraNdum pOyiraNdin vIdu<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Word for Word Meanings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>pOy \u2013 analysing all the SAsthras (sacred texts)<br \/>\nmadhiyAr \u2013 those who do not know you<br \/>\nnAngil \u2013 among the four major species (celestial, human, animal and plant)<br \/>\npOy vIzha \u2013 falling [into one of the four species]<br \/>\nmadhiththAy \u2013 you had taken a vow<br \/>\nmadhi \u2013 moon\u2019s<br \/>\nkOL \u2013 curse<br \/>\nviduththAy \u2013 Oh one who caused it to disappear!<br \/>\nmadu \u2013 in a pond<br \/>\nkidandha \u2013 having arrived at (due to a curse)<br \/>\nmA mudhalai \u2013 a huge crocodile<br \/>\nkOL \u2013 grasping (the elephant gajEndhra)<br \/>\nviduppAn \u2013 to liberate it<br \/>\nAzhi \u2013 the divine disc<br \/>\nvidaRku \u2013 to propel<br \/>\nmadhiththAy \u2013 you thought of<br \/>\niraNdum \u2013 both the elephant and the crocodile<br \/>\npOy \u2013 leaving their earlier stage<br \/>\niraNdin \u2013 for the two creatures<br \/>\nvIdu \u2013 for liberation from their curse and for attaining SrIvaikuNtam<br \/>\nmadhiththAy \u2013 you took a vow<\/p>\n<h3><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>nAngil pOy madhiyAr vIzha madhiththAy<\/strong> \u2013 you had vowed that those who do not know you despite analysing the four vEdhas will bite the dust.<\/p>\n<p><strong>nAngil madhiyAdhAr<\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<em>chathur vEdhadharO viprO vAsudhEvam na vindhadhi<\/em> I <em>vEdhabhArabharAkrAnthas sa vai brAhmaNagardhabha<\/em>: \u00a0II\u201d (the brAhmaNa who studies the four vEdhas and who does not know vAsudhEvan (<a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>), is like a donkey which carries the loaded vEdhas (which is like invaluable saffron) ). These people (who, despite analysing vEdhas do not know emperumAn) are despised like this (like the example given here).<\/p>\n<p><strong>madhiyAr nAngil pOy vIzha madhiththAy<\/strong> \u2013 you vowed that such people will be born in the four major species (of celestial, human, animal and plant) repeatedly. <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> has mercifully mentioned in <a href=\"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/16-19\/\">SrI bhagavath gIthA 16-19<\/a> \u201c<em>thAnaham dhvishatha: krUrAn samsAreshu narAdhamAn<\/em> I <em>kshipAmyajasramaSubhAnAsurIshvEva yOnishu <\/em>\u00a0II\u201d (I push those who hate me, who are cruel, who are the worst among people\u00a0 and sinners, into the demonic species repeatedly).<\/p>\n<p><strong>madhi kOL viduththAy<\/strong> \u2013 you removed the affliction of chandhra (moon) who knew you. Is it not well known that those who do not know you suffer and those who know you are joyous!<\/p>\n<p>Has this been seen elsewhere before?<\/p>\n<p><strong>madukkidandha mAmudhalai kOL viduppAn AzhividaRku madhiththAy<\/strong> \u2013 you decided to release the divine disc (to allow the elephant to be liberated) when the crocodile in the pond grasped firmly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>mAmudhalai<\/strong> \u2013 both in terms of physical form and strength, the crocodile was bigger than the elephant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>kOL<\/strong> \u2013 the strong grasp (of the crocodile)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Azhi vidaRku madhiththAy<\/strong> \u2013 while you could have killed the crocodile through your vow\/will, you came to the pond and released the disc so that you would sustain gajEndhra who wanted to have your dharSan (seeing) with the divine hand and divine disc. While removing the enemy could have been achieved with <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>\u2019s vow, pleasing the follower can be done only through releasing the disc. Aren\u2019t emperumAn\u2019s divine, auspicious form and armaments\/ornaments meant only for his followers, as quoted in jithanthE SlOkam 5 \u201c<em>na thE rUpam na chAkArO nAyudhAni nA chAspadham<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 (your basic nature, your divine form, your weapons, your dwelling place are not meant for you; they are for your devotees)!<\/p>\n<p><strong>iraNdum pOy iraNdin vIdu madhiththAy<\/strong> \u2013 you vowed that both crocodile and elephant would get rid of their forms and return to their original forms \u2013 crocodile regained its old gandharva (a class of celestial entity) form and the elephant went to SrIvaikuNtam. <em>vIdu<\/em> \u2013 position. This word can also mean liberation. Hence <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> vowed that crocodile will get liberated from its curse and elephant, liberation from samsAram.<\/p>\n<p>Legend has it that a sage dhEvala was carrying out penance in a water body. At that time, a gandharva by name <em>hUhU<\/em> grasped the sage\u2019s leg due to which the sage cursed him that the gandharva will be born as a crocodile and eat by grasping its victims. Similarly, <em>indhradhyumna<\/em>, a <em>vishNubhaktha<\/em> (devotee of vishNu) was meditating when he did not see the arrival of sage agasthya. The sage cursed him that he will become an elephant due to his vanity. Though born as an elephant, indhradhyumna was devoted to vishNu. One day, when he entered a pond to pluck a flower and offer it to emperumAn, he was grasped by the crocodile (gandharva) and the two fought for a very long time.
