He responds saying \u201c<em>Arum aRiyAr <\/em>meant that no one has fully estimated his greatness. There are many who know a little bit of his greatness. But there is none among them who knows as much as I do. Those who attempt to know him through their efforts would know a little bit about his supremacy. Since he, with causeless mercy, showed himself to me, I alone know his great qualities such as simplicity etc\u201d. Alternatively, it can be construed that he is saying \u201cWhen it comes to the question of those who are carrying out means on their own to attain him, is it possible for them to know about as much as I do, who had seen him when he chose to show himself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>pAlil kidandhadhuvum paNdarangam mEyadhuvum<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Alil thuyinRadhuvum AraRivAr gyAlath<\/em><br \/>\n<em> thoruporuLai vAnavar tham meypporuLai appil<\/em><br \/>\n<em> aruporuLai yAn aRindhavARu<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Word for Word Meanings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>pAlil kidandhadhuvum \u2013 reclining on <em>thiruppARkadal<\/em>, the milky ocean<br \/>\npaNdu arangam mEyadhuvuam \u2013 at an earlier point of time, dwelling in thiruvarangam (SrIrangam)<br \/>\nAlil thuyinRadhuvum \u2013 sleeping on a tender banyan leaf<br \/>\ngyAlaththu oruporuLai \u2013 one who is the only causative factor for the worlds<br \/>\nvAnavar tham meypporuLai \u2013 one who is shining radiantly to the nithyasUris (permanent dwellers of SrivaikuNtam)<br \/>\nappil aru poruLai \u2013 (during the time of creation) the rare entity, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>, who is lying on water<br \/>\nyAn aRindhavARu \u2013 as I know him to be<br \/>\nAr aRivAr \u2013 who knows?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>pAlil kidandhadhuvum<\/strong> \u2013 being the controller of nithyasUris and the causative factor for the worlds, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>, in order to uplift some chEthanas (jIvAthmAs) from samsAram, thinking of taking several incarnations, lies in the milky ocean in a meditative posture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>paNdarangam mEyadhuvum<\/strong> \u2013 dwelling aptly at thrivarangam which is considered as the upper limit for emperumAn\u2019s incarnations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>paNdu<\/strong> \u2013 at a time when the entire area was like a forest and there was none expecting him, emperumAn had reclined there with the desire \u201cwill not someone at some point of time attain me?\u201d \u2013 the anguish of the protector more than that of the protected.<\/p>\n<p><strong>arangam mEyadhuvum<\/strong> \u2013 fitting into arangam better than at SrIvaikuNtam. Thinking of the troubles faced by samsAris in this world, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> feels for them in his divine heart and with that warmth, comes and dwells here. When <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/parasara-bhattar\/\">paraSAra bhattar<\/a> was mercifully explaining this, he was asked by a follower \u201cis it apt for someone who is full of happiness in SrIvaikuNtam to feel sorrowful?\u201d to which bhattar responded quoting SrI rAmAyaNa SlOkam \u201c<em>vyasanEshu manushyANAm bhruSam bh<\/em>avathi <em>dhukkitha:<\/em>\u201d (when people (of his kingdom) suffer, SrI rAma suffers more than they). <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/nampillai\/\">nampiLLai<\/a>, in his Idu commentary for thiruvAimozhi 4.10.2 has mercifully mentioned \u201cif there is no way of showering his mercy, emperumAn wouldn\u2019t have created <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">chEthanas<\/a> (sentient entities \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">jIvAthmAs<\/a>) [creating chEthanas implies giving them bodies], as he had already negated any happening for himself out of karmas (virtuous and sinful deeds) ; has it not been said \u2018<em>sa EkAkI na ramEtha<\/em>\u2019 \u2013 nArAyaNa was not happy at the beginning, when he was alone, even when the nithyavibhUthi and all his auspicious qualities were already present!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alil thuyinRadhuvum<\/strong> \u2013 sleeping on a tender banyan leaf after keeping all the worlds in his stomach and protecting them at the time of deluge and the chEthanas were threatened<\/p>\n<p><strong>AraRivAr<\/strong> \u2013 who will know that <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> has such soft qualities? One may comprehend, to an extent, his greatness. It is not possible to understand his simplicity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>yAn aRindhavARu AraRivAr<\/strong> \u2013 would anyone know, out of his own efforts, the qualities such as simplicity etc of <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>\u2019s as much as I, who had been manifested these by emperumAn himself, would know?<\/p>\n<p>When asked whether emperumAn has only simplicity, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thirumazhisai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> says next that even his greatness has no limits. Only if simplicity and greatness are together would it shine radiantly like a gemstone studded in gold.<\/p>\n<p><strong>gyAlaththu oru poruLai<\/strong> \u2013 the unique entity which is the causative factor for the creation of the worlds as mentioned in the upanishaths such as \u201c<em>sadhEva sOmyEdhamagra AsIth EkamEva adhvathIyam<\/em>\u201d (Oh sOmadhEva! There was only one entity at the beginning and none else) and \u201c<em>EkO ha vai nArAyaNa AsIth na brahmA nESAna:<\/em>\u201d (only nArAyaNa was there at the beginning; not brahmA, not Siva)<\/p>\n<p><strong>gyAlaththu oru poruLai<\/strong> \u2013 the only entity who stood as the entire worlds \u2013 as being joined with subtle forms in the beginning (during deluge when all the entities, both sentient and insentient, were part of his form, with no form or name of their own) and being joined with gross entities later on (during creation when the sentient and insentient had forms and names of their own)<\/p>\n<p><strong>appil aru poruLai<\/strong> \u2013 the causative factor for the worlds, who created the element <em>appu<\/em> (water) initially, and reclined on it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>yAn aRindhavARu yAr aRivAr<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thirumazhisai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> asks as to who knows such <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> as much as he knows. Those who know his greatness do not know his simplicity and those who know his simplicity do not know his greatness. AzhwAr says that he is the only one who knows both. Those who attain him on their own do not know of his simplicity. Those who worship other deities do not know of his greatness.
