But then, will <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> become so very simple that we could see him? AzhwAr says that only to remove that shortcoming, he has taken residence, close to us, at thirumalai, as a simple entity, so that we could see him with our eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>purindhu madha vEzham mAppidiyOdUdith<\/em><br \/>\n<em> thirindhu sinaththAl porudhu virindha sIr<\/em><br \/>\n<em> veNkOttu muththu udhirkkum vEngadamE mElorunAl<\/em><br \/>\n<em> maNkOttuk koNdAn malai<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Word by Word Meanings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>madha vEzham \u2013 male elephant which is in exultation<br \/>\nmA pidiyOdu \u2013 with its great female elephant<br \/>\npurindhu \u2013 engaging in union<br \/>\nUdi \u2013 (after that) engaging in love-quarrel<br \/>\nthirindhu \u2013 (due to that separating from its female and) wandering<br \/>\nsinaththAl porudhu \u2013 hitting (against gem rocks) in anger<br \/>\nvirindha sIr \u2013 having the wealth of valour<br \/>\nveN kOdu \u2013 from its white tusks<br \/>\nmuththu \u2013 pearls<br \/>\nudhirkkum \u2013 will shed<br \/>\nvEngadamE \u2013 thirumalai hills<br \/>\nmEl oru nAL \u2013 at an earlier point of time<\/p>\n<p>(in the form of varAha, wild boar)<br \/>\nmaN \u2013 earth<br \/>\nkOdu \u2013 on its tusks<br \/>\nkoNdAn \u2013 one who had it<br \/>\nmalai \u2013 divine hills<\/p>\n<h3><strong>vyAkyanam<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>madha vEzham<\/strong> \u2013 an exulting elephant<\/p>\n<p><strong>mAppidiyOdu Udi<\/strong> \u2013 engaging in love-quarrel with its female elephant, knowing well that the female is capable of making it (the male elephant) carry out tasks that it thinks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>purindhu<\/strong> \u2013 after the love quarrel, engaging in union<\/p>\n<p><strong>thirundhu<\/strong> \u2013 the male elephant will wander about as a result of its pride over that union<\/p>\n<p><strong>Udi mAppidiyOdu<\/strong> \u2013 the greatness of the female was the cause for the male to engage in love-quarrel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>thirindhu<\/strong> \u2013 wandering in orchards<\/p>\n<p><strong>sinaththAl porudhu<\/strong> \u2013 looking at its own shadow on the rocks, mistaking the shadow for another elephant, it will become angry and hit against the rocks. It will remain in that posture to manifest its valour fully.<\/p>\n<p>There is another way to interpret the meaning:<\/p>\n<p><strong>madhavEzham mAppidiyOdu purindhu Udi<\/strong> \u2013 the male elephant will engage in love-quarrel after its union with the female.<\/p>\n<p><strong>thirindhu sinaththAl porudhu<\/strong> \u2013 because of that quarrel, the male elephant will wander here and there and hit against the gem rocks in the hills. Just as it has been mentioned in <a href=\"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/2-62\/\">SrI bhagavath gIthA 2-62<\/a> \u201c<em>kAmAth krOdhObhijAyathE<\/em>\u201d (infatuation gives birth to anger), hitting against the rocks due to that anger.<\/p>\n<p><strong>virindha sIr<\/strong> \u2013 the valour which the elephant had because of hitting [against the rocks] like this. Just as sIthAppirAtti happily embraced SrI rAma after seeing his valour when he killed demons such as kara , dhUsha et al, the female elephant would put an end to the love quarrel and embrace the male elephant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>virindha sIr veNkOttu muththu udhirkkum<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/nanjiyar\/\">nanjIyar<\/a>, the AchArya of <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/nampillai\/\">nampiLLai<\/a> [who has written this commentary] would mercifully say: it is that thirumalai where the elephant which has wealth of valour would shed pearls formed in its tusks [from hitting against the gem rocks].<\/p>\n<p><strong>mEl oru nAL maN kOttuk koNdAn<\/strong> \u2013 isn\u2019t thirumalai, which has such benefits, the land which is the dwelling place of one who once upon a time dug out the earth and kept in on his tusks! It is the hill belonging to <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> when he took the form of SrI varAha [wild boar] and held bhUmip pirAtti (earth) on his tusks. The elephants in thirumalai complement the divine form of SrI varAha.
