In this first pAsuram, the existence of unlimited auspicious qualities, unconditional mercy, controlling the nithyasUris and having eternal auspicious forms &#8211; all of which reveal the supremacy of <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\">emperumAn,<\/a>\u00a0are revealed. Having said so, <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">nammAzhwAr<\/a> directs his heart to always serve such <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\">emperumAn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highlights from<a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/10\/05\/periyavachan-pillai-english\/\"> periyavAchchAn piLLai<\/a>\u2018s introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Very similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/14\/nanjiyar-english\/\">nanjIyar<\/a>&#8216;s introduction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highlights from <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/16\/nampillai-english\/\">nampiLLai<\/a>&#8216;s introduction as documented by <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/17\/vadakku-thiruveedhi-pillai-english\/\">vadakkuth thiruvIdhip piLLai<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">nammAzhwAr<\/a> first highlights the 3 main favours which are done by <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\">emperumAn<\/a> towards him. First <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\">emperumAn<\/a> favoured <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> by showing his true nature of being filled with auspicious qualities. Then, even though <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> did not have anything on his side,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\">emperumAn<\/a> blessed him with divine knowledge and devotion towards him out of his causeless mercy. Then he showed that he is the master of nithyasUris. Being favoured like this, <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> directs his heart to come and serve him eternally. <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> asks his heart to bow down to <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> to be uplifted. When a river starts flooding nearby fields, the trees which stay still will be uprooted while the plants etc., which bend and tackle the flood, will survive. Bow down with folded hands at the lotus feet of <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\">emperumAn<\/a> and be uplifted. <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\">emperumAn<\/a> is the famous one highlighted in authentic scriptures\u00a0 as one who has unexplainable greatness which makes all other greatness non-existing. He is the one who blessed me true knowledge and devotion, out of his unconditional grace that dispelled my ignorance completely. He is the indisputable master of the nithyasUris who have no defects such as forgetful nature etc.<\/p>\n<p>In the first line, &#8220;<em>nalam<\/em>&#8221; indicates the unlimited bliss or those auspicious qualities which lead to the unlimited bliss of <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> . In the second line, &#8220;<em>nalam<\/em>&#8221; indicates devotional friendship with <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Each line ending with &#8220;avan&#8221; in the end is joined with the last line and explained as well. i.e., Oh mind! bow down at the lotus feet of the one who is filled with auspicious qualities and be uplifted.\u00a0Oh mind! bow down at the one lotus feet of the who bestowed me true knowledge and devotion and be uplifted. Oh mind! bow down at the one lotus feet of the who is the master of nithyasUris and be uplifted.<\/p>\n<p>Also, this pAsuram reveals the essence of thirumanthram. praNavam which reveals the master-servant relationship between <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">paramAthmA<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">jIvAthmA<\/a> is explained in first line as it explains <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> being supreme to everyone, nama: &#8211; he being upAyam is explained by the second line as it explains <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> bestowing true knowledge\/devotion to <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> and finally nArAyaNAya is explained in the 3rd and 4th lines &#8211; the ultimate goal of paramapadham (3rd line) and kainkaryam (4th line).<\/p>\n<h3>vyAkyAnams (commentaries)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Highlights from <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/04\/14\/thirukkurugaippiran-pillan-english\/\">thirukkurukaippirAn piLLAn<\/a>&#8216;s vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> instructs his mind to engage in all types of kainkaryam at all places in all ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> and be uplifted. <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> is explained as having unlimited auspicious qualities such as bliss etc. He unconditionally and mercifully blessed <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> with divine blemishless knowledge and triggered great devotion towards his lotus feet. <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> is explained as the master of the infiinte divine souls in paramapadham such as Adhi sEshan, vishwaksEnar, garudAzhwAr et al who never fall from their position and already showering his mercy towards such nithyasUris.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highlights from <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/14\/nanjiyar-english\/\">nanjIyar<\/a>&#8216;s vyAkyAnam<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>uyarvaRa uyarnalam udaiyavan<\/em> &#8211; Just like in the presence of Sun, the stars do not shine, in comparison to <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a>&#8216;s glories, others&#8217; glories do not shine at all.<\/li>\n<li><em>madhinalam<\/em> &#8211; bhakthirUpApanna gyAnam &#8211; knowledge enriched with devotion or knowledge matured into devotion.<\/li>\n<li><em>amarargaL<\/em> &#8211; usage of plural indicates that there are infinite nithyasUris.<\/li>\n<li><em>thuyaraRu sudaradi<\/em> &#8211; Is there agony for the lotus feet themselves? Yes &#8211; they consider the agony of the ones who are surrendered as their own and remove that agony.<\/li>\n<li>Why is <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> asking to worship the lotus feet instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> himself? Just like a nursing child will look for the mother&#8217;s bosom, adiyavan (dhAsa &#8211; servitor) will look for the lotus feet of the master.<\/li>\n<li>Many arguments such as &#8220;brahmam is sath only without any attributes&#8221; (auspicious qualities in the first line) and &#8220;the difference between <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">jIvAthmA<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">paramAthmA<\/a> is artificial, on liberation they will become one&#8221; (master of nithyasUris explained in the third line) are defeated easily and <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">AzhwAr<\/a>&#8216;s sidhdhAntham [philosophy] is established.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Highlights from <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/10\/05\/periyavachan-pillai-english\/\">periyavAchchAn piLLai<\/a>\u2018s vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This reflects <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/16\/nampillai-english\/\">nampiLLai<\/a>&#8216;s vyAkyAnam mostly.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>amararagaL<\/em> &#8211; ones who are immortal. For them death means separation from <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> &#8211; there is no other death for them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Highlights from <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/16\/nampillai-english\/\">nampiLLai<\/a>&#8216;s vyAkyAnam as documented by <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/17\/vadakku-thiruveedhi-pillai-english\/\">vadakkuth thiruvIdhip piLLai<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>uyaravaRa uyarnalam<\/em> &#8211; When\u00a0thaiththirIya upanishath started enjoying <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a>&#8216;s auspicious qualities, it could not even fully enjoy a single quality named &#8220;Anandham&#8221; (bliss) and declared &#8220;<em>yathO vAchO nivarthanthE<\/em>&#8220;. Each quality of <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/17\/divya-dhampathi\/\">emperumAn<\/a> is infinitely great. ALavandhAr explains that <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a>&#8216;s greatness over all other entities is clearly explained here.<\/li>\n<li><em>udaiyavan<\/em> &#8211; These qualities are natural for <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> instead of being accidental (acquired). <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2013\/10\/05\/kurathazhwan\/\">kUraththAzhwAn<\/a> explains to piLLai piLLai AzhwAn that <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> establishes <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a>&#8216;s auspicious qualities right upfront and easily defeats the ones who claim he is nirguNam (without any qualities &#8211; according to them).<\/li>\n<li><em>yavan<\/em> &#8211; that most famous and established personality. The personality on whom these auspicious qualities are naturally and fittingly visible. This means <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> by nature is great and does not depend on his qualities to prove his greatness. On the other hand, this also means that <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> who is with such great auspicious qualities.<\/li>\n<li><em>mayarvaRa<\/em> &#8211; removing the agyAnam (ignorance) completely. agyAnam is of 3 categories\n<ul>\n<li>gyAna anudhaya (no knowledge at all) &#8211;\u00a0 dhEhAthma abhimAnam &#8211; considering body as the soul. This means, there is no knowledge about <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">jIvAthmA<\/a> and considering the body itself as everything.<\/li>\n<li>anyathA gyAnam &#8211; dhEvathAnthara sEshathvam &#8211; considering oneself as servitor of other dhEvathAs such as brahmA, rudhran, indhran et al.<\/li>\n<li>viparIdha gyAnam &#8211; svAthanthriyam (considering oneself as independant) and svabhOgyam (considering oneself as the enjoyer) like kEvalan (one who desires kaivalya mOksham).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>madhinalam<\/em> &#8211; some explain this as gyAnam and bhakthi. But <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/11\/parasara-bhattar\/\">bhattar<\/a> explains this as gyAnam enriched with bhakthi (gyAnam matured as bhakthi). This bhakthi was blessed by <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> himself and it induces kainkaryam to <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a>. When some ask <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/07\/embar\/\">embAr<\/a> if <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> was a prapanna or bhakthi yOga nishta, he replies &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> is a prapanna; but performs bhakthi to spend his time in this world&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li><em>aruLinan<\/em> &#8211; Being blessed by <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> unconditionally, AzhwAr considers himself as <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/09\/thathva-thrayam-achith-what-is-matter\/\">asath<\/a> (insentient) before being blessed.<\/li>\n<li><em>ayarvaRum &#8230;<\/em> &#8211; One who has a whole realm (parampadham) filled with devotees who cannot sustain themselves without bhagavAn&#8217;s mercy. nithyasUris are those who have no forgetfulness by the grace of bhagavAn; mukthAthmAs are those who were in samsAra before with forgetfulness but subsequently got relieved of the same during liberation, by the grace of bhagavAn.<\/li>\n<li><em>amarargaL<\/em> &#8211; the residents of paramapadham who cannot bear separation from <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a>. All of them look similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> &#8211; only in the grand assembly and by seeing his divine consorts and divine ornaments like srI kausthubam can bhagavAn be easily identified.<\/li>\n<li><em>adhipathi<\/em> &#8211; Though there are some similarities,\u00a0 he is completely greater than they.<\/li>\n<li><em>thuyaraRu<\/em> &#8211; Previously AchAryas explained this as &#8220;<em>thuyaraRukkum<\/em>&#8221; (that which dispels the agony of others). <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/06\/emperumanar\/\">emperumAnAr<\/a> explained this as &#8220;<em>thuyaraRu sudaradi<\/em>&#8221; (the lotus feet which dispel the agony of <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a>). As explained in srI rAmAyaNam ayOdhyA kANdam 2.42 &#8220;<em>vyasanEshu cha manushyANAm brusam bhavathi dhukkitha:<\/em>&#8221; (when his subjects suffered, srI rAma felt more agony than themselves) <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> was in pain seeing <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">AzhwAr<\/a>&#8216;s sufferings before, but seeing he has been blessed, his agony is dispelled.<\/li>\n<li><em>thozhudhu<\/em> &#8211; engaging in the devotional activity which is natural for the <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">jIvAthmA<\/a> considering the time lost in this samsAram since time immemorial.<\/li>\n<li><em>ezhu<\/em> &#8211; rise and be uplifted. From the state of &#8220;<em>asannEva sa bhavathi<\/em>&#8221; (thaiththirIya upanishath Anandhavalli &#8211; he is not even considered to be existing when he considers brahmam to be not existing), he became &#8220;<em>santhamEnam thathO vidhu:<\/em>&#8221; (thaiththirIya upanishath Anandhavalli\u00a0 &#8211; others know him to be existing when he knows brahmam to be existing).<\/li>\n<li><em>en mananE<\/em> &#8211; now only <a href=\"https:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/2012\/08\/18\/nammazhwar-english\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> is seeing himself. He relishes his relationship with his mind now having been blessed by <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a>. As explained in srIvishNu purANam 6.7.28 &#8220;<em>mana Eva manushyANAm kAraNam bandhamOkshayO:&#8221; (<\/em>For a man, his mind is the cause for both attachment to this world and liberation from this world).<\/li>\n<li>Ones who claim that <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">bhagavAn<\/a> does not have guNam (qualities), vigraham (form), vibhUthi (wealth) are all defeated in this pAsuram itself. One need not explain the opponents case and defeat it.
