{"id":18343,"date":"2017-11-04T23:34:41","date_gmt":"2017-11-04T23:34:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/?p=18343"},"modified":"2017-11-04T23:34:41","modified_gmt":"2017-11-04T23:34:41","slug":"irandam-thiruvandhadhi-35","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/2017\/11\/irandam-thiruvandhadhi-35\/","title":{"rendered":"iraNdAm thiruvandhAdhi &#8211; 35 &#8211; inidhenbar kAmam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><small>SrI:\u00a0 SrImathE SatakOpAya nama:\u00a0 SrImathE rAmAnujAya nama:\u00a0 SrImath varavaramunayE nama:<\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/2017\/09\/irandam-thiruvandhadhi\/\">Full Series<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/2017\/11\/irandam-thiruvandhadhi-34\/\">&lt;&lt; Previous<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/githai-karappangadu-wrapper-e1435046879573.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2624\" src=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/githai-karappangadu-wrapper-e1435046879573.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"319\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/githai-karappangadu-wrapper-e1435046879573.jpeg 475w, https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/githai-karappangadu-wrapper-e1435046879573-300x294.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 319px) 100vw, 319px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>avathArikai<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/bhuthaththazhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> says that if people of the world do not shun <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> when he repeatedly comes, even as a mendicant, falling head over heels, and if they do not engage with worldly pursuits, suffering the consequences and are thus a bit well disposed towards him, that would protect them.\u00a0 He detests that the world thinks [people of the world think] that worldly pursuits are sweet when emperumAn is like this.<\/p>\n<p>Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>inidhenbar kAmam adhanilum ARRa\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em> inidhenbar thaNNIrum endhAy \u2013 inidhenRu<\/em><br \/>\n<em> kAmanIr vELAdhu nin perumai vEtparEl<\/em><br \/>\n<em> sEmanIrAgum siRidhu<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Word by Word Meaning<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>endhAy \u2013 Oh my Lord!<\/p>\n<p>(the common people)<br \/>\nkAmam \u2013 lowly pursuits such as Sabdham etc (five sensory perceptions such as sound etc)<br \/>\ninidhu enbar \u2013 will consider as fit to be enjoyed<\/p>\n<p>(Even those who have renounced everything)<br \/>\nthaNNIr adhanilum ARRa inidhu enbar \u2013 will say that water is sweeter than those pursuits such as Sabdham etc<br \/>\nkAmam nIr \u2013 the lowly pursuits and water, mentioned above<br \/>\ninidhu enRu vELAdhu \u2013 without desiring them as being enjoyable<br \/>\nnin perumai siRidhu vEtpar El \u2013 if they desire even a little bit, you as being enjoyable<\/p>\n<p>(that)<br \/>\nsEmam nIr Agum \u2013 (in all situations) will have the characteristic of protecting [them]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>inidhu enbar kAmam<\/strong> \u2013 worldly people [those in this samsAram, materialistic realm] will consider lust as being sweet. <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/bhuthaththazhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> has heard this from such people. Since he has used the term <em>inidhu enbar<\/em> (will <em>say<\/em> that it is sweet), it implies that he has had no connection with such pursuits. Just as lowly people will say that the food that they eat is very delicious, people who are after lust will say that it is sweet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>adhanilum ARRa inidhu enbar thaNNIrum<\/strong> \u2013 they will say that water is even sweeter than that [lust]. Even those who are experts in lust need water to sustain them. Even though the food that people take may differ, isn\u2019t water the same for everyone! Just as it is said \u201c<em>Apa Eva hi sumana<\/em>\u201d (water is liked by all) those who have renounced the world as well as those who haven\u2019t, will be happy about water, without any distinction. <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/bhuthaththazhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> doesn\u2019t desire even that. Those who are engaged with worldly pursuits will say that lust is sweet and those who are interested in nurturing their bodies will say that water is sweet. \u00a0AzhwAr has no connection with either. Just as the people of the world cannot know his qualities, he is also unable to know the qualities of worldly people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>enbar<\/strong> \u2013 people of the world will say that these are sweet. Since he does not exist in this world [mentally], he says <em>will say<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>endhAy<\/strong> \u2013 For him, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> is the object of lust as well as water. For him, emperumAn is the only matter which counts. Isn\u2019t the <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/bhuthaththazhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> one who considers that emperumAn is everything as mentioned in <a href=\"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/7-19\/\">SrI bhagavath gIthA 7-19<\/a> \u201c<em>vAsudhEvas sarvamithi sa mahAthmA<\/em>\u201d (vAsudhEvan is everything to me) and in thiruvAimozhi 7-1-1 \u201c<em>uNNum sORu parugum nIr thinnum veRRilai ellAm kaNNan<\/em>\u201d (kaNNan is everything to me \u2013 the food that nurtures, the water that sustains and the betel leaf that is enjoyed).<\/p>\n<p><strong>inidhu enRu<\/strong> \u2013 it implies that something which is not sweet is being considered as sweet. It is similar to imagining fire to be water and entering it to remove one\u2019s ennui.\u00a0 One gets engaged with worldly pursuits only because of lack of good fortune.<\/p>\n<p><strong>kAma nIr vELAdhu<\/strong> \u2013 not desiring lust and water as sweet, since they are really not sweet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>nin perumai vEtparEl<\/strong> \u2013 if they desire your qualities. Since enjoyment in this world has limitation and is nonsensical, it will not remain unchanged for ever. But in the case of <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>, since he is very sweet, during the time of attaining him by adopting suitable means as well as enjoying the result of attaining him, it would be very sweet without any limitation and it will not be possible for one to get fulfilment after enjoying him. It would be similar to what has been mentioned in thaiththiriya upanishath Anandhavalli 7 \u201c<em>Esha hyEvAnandhayAthi<\/em>\u201d (isn\u2019t it only the <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/12\/thathva-thrayam-iswara-who-is-god\/\">paramAthmA<\/a> [<a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>] making the <a href=\"https:\/\/granthams.koyil.org\/2013\/03\/06\/thathva-thrayam-chith-who-am-i\/\">jIvAthmA<\/a> to be happy).<\/p>\n<p><strong>nin perumal vEtparEl<\/strong> \u2013 if one were to ask \u201cif it cannot be avoided, should it not be somehow\u00a0 enjoyed?\u201d, instead of doing that &#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>nin perumal vEtparEl<\/strong> \u2013 one need not desire to enjoy all his greatness. If one were to meditate on his auspicious qualities, that itself would provide protection. One need not lose a hand or leg, unlike what could happen if one were to pursue lust and water mentioned earlier. It is enough if one has the feeling of being friendly towards <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>sEma nIr Agum<\/strong> \u2013 that will have the quality of protecting that person. emperumAn is one who says, just as he said in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 18-3 \u201c<em>mithrabhAvEna samprAptham na thyajEyam kathanchana<\/em>\u201d (there is no place for letting go of this person who has come in the guise of a friend). Hence it is enough if we give up the posture of being unfavourable to him. In the other matters [worldly pursuits] being favourable too will destroy us. If one were to get involved with worldly matters, it will lead to a situation as mentioned in <a href=\"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/2-63\/\">SrI bhagavath gIthA 2-63<\/a> \u201c<em>bhudhdhi nASAth praNachyathi <\/em>\u201d (due to destruction of intelligence, he submerges in samsAram and is destroyed). Even if one feigns desire in emperumAn, that would protect him as mentioned in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 18-33 \u201c<em>abhayam sarvabhUthEbhyO dhadhami Ethath vratham mama<\/em>\u201d(I protect from all creatures; this is my vow). Hasn\u2019t krishNa mentioned in <a href=\"http:\/\/githa.koyil.org\/index.php\/9-31\/\">SrI bhagavath gIthA 9-31<\/a> \u201c<em>kaunthEya prathijAnIhi na mE bhakthi: praNaSyathi<\/em>\u201d (Oh arjuna! Take a pledge yourself that my devotee will not be destroyed)! Hasn\u2019t he said \u201carjuna! For this meaning, you take the pledge\u201d! Should one, who desires to get the fame of leading a great life, attain one such as rudhra who gives us up at the hands of his enemies?
