When asked \u201cwhat will these bhAgavathas do together?\u201d, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/nammazhwar\/\">AzhwAr <\/a>says that they will be singing mangaLASAsanam (UzhithORUzhiyOvAdhu, vAzhiya enRu) to <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn <\/a>as in <a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/2015\/06\/thiruppallandu-2-adiyomodum\/\">thiruppallANdu 2<\/a> &#8220;adiyOmOdum ninnOdum pirivinRi Ayiram pallANdu&#8221; (I should be with you forever). <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/periyAzhwAr\/\">periyAzhwar <\/a>in his thiruppallAndu, performs mangaLASAsanam by placing \u201cpallANdu\u201d (many years) as the base year, and finally multiplies that by many (countless) crores of years; here <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/nammazhwar\/\">AzhwAr <\/a>not satisfied at that level, starts with \u201cUzhi\u201d (kalpa, a day of brahmA which contains 1000 four yuga cycle) and then multiplies that by many times.<\/p>\n<p>Let us look at the pAsuram and its meanings.<\/p>\n<p><em>UzhithORUzhi OvAdhu vAzhiya<br \/>\nenRu yAm thozha isaiyum kol,<br \/>\nyAvagai ulagamum yAvarum illA<br \/>\nmElvarum perum pAzh kAlaththu, irum porutku<br \/>\nellAm arumpeRal thani viththu, oruthAn<br \/>\nAgith theyva nAnmugak kozhumuLai<br \/>\nInRu, mukkaN IsanOdu dhEvupala<br \/>\nnudhali mU ulagam viLaiththa undhi,<br \/>\nmAyak kadavuL mAmudhal adiyE <\/em><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/yourListen.com\/sarathy.thothathri\/thiruvasiriyam-pasuram-recital-4\">Listen<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/yourListen.com\/embed\/html5?17756756\" style=\"width:100%;\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Word by Word Meaning<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>yAvagai ulagamum &#8211; all the categories of the world<br \/>\nyAvarum illA \u2013 all kinds of living beings<br \/>\nillA \u2013 without<br \/>\nmElvarum \u2013 the past times<br \/>\nperum pAzh kAlaththu \u2013 very long<br \/>\nirum porutku ellAm \u2013 for the countless living beings<br \/>\npeRal arum \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperuman <\/a>who is difficult to attain<br \/>\nthani oru viththu \u2013 He is the distinct, independent primordial cause.<br \/>\nthAn Agi \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn <\/a>himself (alone)<br \/>\ndheyvam nAnmugan \u2013 the dhEvathA, brahmA<br \/>\nkozhu muLai \u2013 perfect sprout<br \/>\nmukkaN IsanOdu \u2013 along with the three-eyed rudhra<br \/>\npala dhEvu \u2013 several dhEvathAs<br \/>\nInRu \u2013 creates<br \/>\nnudhali \u2013 and make sankalpam (vow them to be the incharge for creation, destruction etc)<br \/>\nmU ulagam \u2013 the three worlds<br \/>\nviLaiththa \u2013 creates<br \/>\nundhi \u2013 He who has divine navel<br \/>\nmAyan \u2013 He who has amazing ability<br \/>\nkadavul \u2013 being the supreme god.<br \/>\nmA mudhal \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn <\/a>who is the supreme primordial cause, his<br \/>\nadi \u2013 divine feet<br \/>\nUzhithORUzhi \u2013 during every kalpa (eon)<br \/>\nOvadhu \u2013 incessantly<br \/>\nvAzhiya \u2013 to live<br \/>\nenRu \u2013 that<br \/>\nyAm \u2013 us<br \/>\nthozha \u2013 to praise (by performing mangaLASAsanam)<br \/>\nisaiyum kol \u2013 will it be possible?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>UzhithORUzhi <\/strong>\u2013&nbsp; Every kalpam. It is unlike &#8220;nithya agni hOthram&#8221; [which is done at specific times every day]. [When asked \u201ccan we do mangaLASAsanam during every kalpa at a particular time?\u201d, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/nammazhwar\/\">AzhwAr <\/a>replies,]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ovadhu <\/strong>\u2013 It should be done incessantly every second (without even a momentary break), and when asked \u201cwhat are the things to be done further?\u201d, he replies,<\/p>\n<p><strong>vAzhiyavenRu <\/strong>\u2013 one should always perform mangaLASAsanam to <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn <\/a>as \u201cpallAndu (long live)\u201d. <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/nammazhwar\/\">AzhwAr <\/a>starts describing about <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn\u2019s<\/a> SEshithvam (lordship) in first pAsuram, and in third pAsuram he says that it goes upto his devotees, and here in this pAsuram he says that those who attain the bhAgavatha SEshathvam (having servitude to bhAgavathas) should always perform mangaLASAsanam to <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>yAm <\/strong>\u2013 We who were thinking for self as said in yajur ashtakam3.5 \u201c<em><strong>AyurASAsthE<\/strong><\/em>\u201d (praying for long life) until now; leaving that state,<\/p>\n<p><strong>thozha <\/strong>\u2013 thozhugai (worship) means performing mangaLASAsanam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>isayum kol <\/strong>\u2013there is a lot of difference between living for oneself and living for bhagavAn;<\/p>\n<p>when asked &#8220;which act of <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> is meditated upon by those who desire to attain this impossible state?&#8221;, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/nammazhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> says,<\/p>\n<p><strong>yAvagai \u2026.. mUvulagam viLaiththa undhi<\/strong> \u2013 Instead of just bestowing specific qualities for an existing entity, for the great favour of creating the entire universe from scratch and facilitating us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>yAvagai ulagamum<\/strong> \u2013 unlike the deluge where just up to the three lOkas [bhU:, bhuvar and suvar] are destroyed and the jana lOkam becomes uninhabitable leading the residents to shift upto the mahar lOkam, here AzhwAr is talking about the total deluge [where everything is destroyed].<\/p>\n<p>Alternative explanation :<\/p>\n<p><strong>yAvarumillA<\/strong> \u2013 unlike the deluge where at least rishis such as mArkaNdEya et al who are present, the deluge where no one exists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>mEl varum<\/strong> \u2013 In the past times. Here \u201cmEl\u201c means past and \u201cvarum\u201d means \u201cgone\u201d [implying the past times which are gone].<\/p>\n<p><strong>perum pAzh kAlaththu<\/strong> \u2013 Just as a farmer would spend a long time draining the salt from the field [to make it fertile] by filling it with water, emperumAn makes the AthmA stay attached with primordial matter for the whole life span of brahmA, to eliminate the evil interests of the AthmA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>irum porutkellAm<\/strong> \u2013 for jIvAthmAs who are all connected with infinite forms such as dhEva (celestial), manushya (human), thiryak (animal) and sthAvara (plant).<\/p>\n<p><strong>arum peRal<\/strong> \u2013 since there is none other than <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn <\/a>who shows them compassion even at this state, he cannot be attained easily (with self effort).<\/p>\n<p><strong>thani viththu oru thAnAgi <\/strong>\u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">bhagavAn <\/a>himself being all the three causes [for creation] viz nimiththa kAraNam (efficient cause), upAdhAna kAraNam (material cause) and sahakAri kAraNam (instrumental\/ancillary cause). Since AzhwAr said &#8220;viththu&#8221; (seed), he is the upAdhAna kAranam. Since AzhwAr says &#8220;thani&#8221; (singular), as said in <strong>mahA upanishath 1 \u201cEkO ha vai nArAyaNa<\/strong> (During creation only nArAyaNa was there and there was no brahmA, no Siva, no water, no fire, no moon, no stars in the sky, no sun), he adhvithIya (there is no other nimiththa kAraNam). Alternatively, AzhwAr is saying there is no one desiring to create us. Since AzhwAr says &#8220;oru&#8221;, it implies that there is no other sahakAri kAraNam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>thAnAgi<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> being the cause for everything that is effected. In this manner emperumAn performs samashti srushti and let brahmA perform vyashti srushti as&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/emperumanar\/\">emperumAnAr<\/a> appoints SrI madhurakavi dhAsar to take care of the SrIrangam temple activities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>dheyva nAnmugan<\/strong> \u2013 Four-headed brahmA who is one among the AthmAs<\/p>\n<p><strong>kozhu muLai InRu<\/strong> \u2013 It is said that <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn <\/a>who created brahma who has great abilities to perform the entire creation of the universe.<\/p>\n<p>Since he cannot perform all three primary tasks viz srushti (creation), sthithi (sustenance) and samhAra (annihilation),&nbsp;for that,<\/p>\n<p><strong>mukkaN IsanOdu dhEvu pala InRu<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> created rudhra who is capable of performing samhAram and other dhEvathAs for various purposes.<\/p>\n<p>When asked \u201cwhat did he do to create all these dhEvathAs\u201d?, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/nammazhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> replies,<\/p>\n<p><strong>nudhali<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> vowed as said in chAndhOgya upanishath &#8220;bahusyAm&#8221; (let me become many). Here \u201cnudhali\u201d means \u201cto consider\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>mUvulagam vilaiththa undhi<\/strong> \u2013 It is the <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn\u2019s<\/a> divine navel which created the three worlds (lower, upper and middle). It is his divine navel which is the independent cause for the entire creation; the divine navel is like a lotus and is the origin for the entire leelA vibhUthi (material realm).<\/p>\n<p><strong>mAyak kadavuL<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> who is the supreme lord with amazing abilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>mAmudhal<\/strong> \u2013 Also explained as <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> who is the supreme primordial cause.
