When asked, aren\u2019t gangA etc pure, he says, in this pAsuram, that they attained their pure state because of their connection with him. This pAsuram is like an explanation to the previous pAsuram.<\/p>\n<p>Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>pidi sEr kaliRaLiththa pErALA un than<\/em><br \/>\n<em> adi sErndhu aruL peRRAL anRE podi sEr<\/em><br \/>\n<em> anaRku angai ERRAn avirsadaimEl pAyndha<\/em><br \/>\n<em> punaR gangai ennum pErp pon<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Word by Word Meanings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>pidi sEr \u2013 roaming with female elephant<br \/>\nkaLiRu \u2013 gajEndhra AzhwAn [a male elephant]<br \/>\naLiththa \u2013 protected<br \/>\npErALA \u2013 Oh magnanimous entity!<br \/>\npodi sEr \u2013 applying ashes<br \/>\nanaRku \u2013 for fire<br \/>\nam kai ERRAn \u2013 one who held his hand, that rudhra\u2019s<br \/>\navir sadai mEl \u2013 on his shining matted hair<br \/>\npAyndha \u2013 fell<br \/>\npunal \u2013 having [copious] water<br \/>\ngangai ennum pEr \u2013 having the name gangA<br \/>\npon \u2013 great gold<br \/>\nun than adi sErndhu \u2013 attaining your divine feet<br \/>\naruL peRRAL anRE \u2013 did she not get your grace!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>pidi sEr kaLiRu aLiththa<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/poigai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> is referring to gajEndhra (male elephant) who was roaming with a female elephant. The implication here is that he does not know anything other than roaming with his female elephant. bruhadhArNyaka upanishath 4-4-23 says \u201c<em>SAnthO dhAntha uparathasthithikshu:<\/em>\u201d (SAsthras, the sacred texts, say that only that person who is able to control his external and internal sensory perceptions and who dissociates himself from worldly pursuits, is fit to reach SrIvaikuNtam). Engaging with worldly pursuits instead of with <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> is considered as sinful deed (however gajEndhran was habituated to roaming with his female elephant). If emperumAn had protected such an entity, sin (or virtue) should be considered as what is decided by emperumAn. While gajEndhra was thinking of his female elephant, emperumAn was thinking of gajEndhra! Did gajEndra not think of emperumAn before? Thinking of his female elephant is his status, until now, says AzhwAr. Thus, birth [whether born in a noble heritage or a lowly heritage], deed [good or bad] etc are not the apt features to be considered. emperumAn\u2019s thought (mercy) alone gives the benefit, says AzhwAr.<\/p>\n<p><strong>aLiththa pErALA<\/strong> \u2013 Oh the great one, who protected that gajEndhra! It is implied here that if <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> protects one who is not apt, anything becomes acceptable when carried out by emperumAn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>pERALA<\/strong> \u2013 is your grace only this much! Hasn\u2019t <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/nammazhwar\/\">nammAzhwAr<\/a> too mercifully stated in his <a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/2016\/08\/thiruvaimozhi-3-3-5-sodhiyagi\/\">thiruvAimozhi 3-3-5<\/a> \u201c<em>sOdhiyAgi eLLa ulagum thozhum AdhimUrththi enRAl aLavAgumO<\/em>\u201d (Is it anything great if I say that you, having a radiant divine form and being worshipped by all the people in the world, are the supreme being, and the causative factor for all the worlds?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>un than adi sErndhu aruL peRRAL anRE<\/strong> \u2013 did not gangA get all the greatness only after attaining your divine feet! This implies that dharmam (righteousness) is \u00a0under the control of <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>. \u00a0Isvara samhithai says \u201c<em>gruhIthvA dharmapAnIyam<\/em>\u201d (taking gangA who is the epitome of righteousness). gangA is referred to as righteousness because of her connection with emperumAn. He graces others to become pure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>podi sEr<\/strong> \u2013 Siva, who has applied ashes. Alternatively, Siva who is reclining on ahses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>anaRku angai ERRAn<\/strong> \u2013 Siva, who is holding fire in his beautiful hands. Other than carrying out such atonements, it is not possible to remove the sins of Siva. Even his thought that he is the controller of all is an exotic one. emperumAn protected such Siva only by keeping his original nature in mind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>avir sadai mEl pAyndhu<\/strong> \u2013 gangA who has such water which flowed through the shining matted hair of Siva.<\/p>\n<p><strong>undhan adi sErndhu aruL peRRAL anRE<\/strong> \u2013 despite carrying out suitable penances such as holding fire and applying ashes all over his body, Siva did not become pure. He became purified only after holding in his head gangA, who has the connection with <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> through his divine feet! Has it not been mercifully stated in periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 4-7-2 \u201c<em>nalam thigazh sadiyAn mudik konRai malarum nAraNan pAdhath thuzhAyum<\/em>\u201d (the head of Siva has become purified since he is carrying the water from emperumAn\u2019s divine feet. The reddish konRai flower from the head of such Siva and the greenish thuLasi from the divine head of nAraNan who is the lord of that Siva&#8230;). Hasn\u2019t <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/alavandhar\/\">ALavandhAr<\/a> too mercifully stated in <a href=\"https:\/\/divyaprabandham.koyil.org\/index.php\/2016\/12\/sthothra-rathnam-13\/\">sthOthra rathnam 13<\/a> \u201c<em>pAdhOdhagEna sa: Siva:<\/em>\u201d (due to the water from [emperumAn\u2019s] divine feet, he became Siva (purified))! Oh emperumAn! Whatever is not connected to your divine feet is not pure.
