He says that emperumAn\u2019s desire to protect was much larger than the objects which were to be protected.<\/p>\n<p>Let us go through the pAsuram and its meanings:<\/p>\n<p><em>pirAn un perumai piRar Ar aRivAr<\/em><br \/>\n<em> urAy ulagu aLandha\u00a0 nAnRu varAgaththu<\/em><br \/>\n<em> eyiRRaLavu pOdhAvARu enkolO endhai<\/em><br \/>\n<em> adikkaLavu pOndha padi<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Word by Word Meanings<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>pirAn \u2013 Oh <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>!<br \/>\nurAy \u2013 without any tiredness<br \/>\nulagu aLandha nAnRu \u2013 when (you) measured the worlds<br \/>\nendhai \u2013 you, my swAmy<br \/>\nadikku \u2013 for the divine feet<br \/>\naLavu pOndha \u2013 appropriate for measurement<br \/>\npadi \u2013 the earth<br \/>\nvarAgaththu \u2013 in the form of varAha (incarnation as wild boar)<br \/>\neyiRRu aLavu \u2013 one part of the tusk<br \/>\npOdhA ArU \u2013 being insufficient<br \/>\nen kol \u2013 how?<br \/>\nun perumai\u00a0 &#8211; your greatness<br \/>\npiRar Ar aRivAr \u2013 who can know (other than you)?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>vyAkyAnam<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>pirAn un perumai<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/poigai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> is wondering at the greatness of emperumAn. He says \u201cOne can only doubt whether you know or do not know your own greatness. No one can doubt that others are incapable of knowing your greatness\u201d (is it not true that no one knows!).\u00a0 thaiththirIya upanishath 2-8-9 says \u201c<em>sO angavEdha yadhi vA navEdha<\/em>\u201d (does he know or not, his own greatness).<\/p>\n<p><strong>urAy ulagu aLandha nAnRu<\/strong> \u2013 If we consider <em>urAy<\/em> is the same as <em>ulAy<\/em> (since the sounds ra and la are interchangeable as per grammar), it will mean wandering. In other words, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> was wandering all over the place and measuring [during his incarnation as thrivikrama]. Alternatively, since celestial entities do not set their foot on earth, instead of doing like that on his own possession of earth, emperumAn kept his divine foot firmly on top of the heads of all the people. <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/parasara-bhattar\/\">parASara bhattar<\/a> would mercifully explain this as \u201cwhen\u00a0 he effortlessly measured, wandering\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>endhai adikkaLavu pOndha padi varAgaththu eyiRRaLavu pOdhAvARu enkolo<\/strong> \u2013 the earth, which was sufficiently big for you to measure with your divine foot, became insignificant when you took your incarnation as varAha (wild boar) such that it appeared like a dot on the tusk of the boar. How did this happen? On one day, the earth was big enough, but on another day it was insignificant. How is this! Is it not because your desire to protect the earth is much bigger than that of the protected entity, earth!
