Through this one deed (of measuring the worlds) which is beyond the capabilities of human race, is it not enough to remind everyone of his supreme nature?\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>pAsuram<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>pAraLavum Oradi vaiththu Oradiyum pAruduththa<\/em><br \/>\n<em> nIraLavum sella nimirndhadhE \u2013 sUruruvin<\/em><br \/>\n<em> pEyaLavu kaNda perumAn aRigilEn<\/em><br \/>\n<em> nI aLavu kaNda neRi<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Word by Word Meaning<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>pAraLavum Oradi vaiththu \u2013 keeping one divine foot till the end of this world [to measure it]<br \/>\nOr adiyum pAr uduththa \u2013 the other divine foot surrounding the entire universe<br \/>\nnIr aLavum sella nimirndhadhu \u2013 it rose to reach the waters covering the universe<br \/>\nsUr uruvin pEy \u2013 a demon who came in the garb of a celestial person<br \/>\naLavu kaNda perumAn \u2013 Oh benefactor, who determined the boundary (of life)<br \/>\nnI aLavu kaNda neRi aRigilEn \u2013 I am not able to know the extent of the deeds carried out by you<\/p>\n<h3><strong>vyAkhyAnam<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>pAraLavum Oradi vaiththu<\/strong> \u2013 keeping a divine foot to reach the end of the world<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oradiyum pAruduththa nIr aLavum sella nimirndhadhu<\/strong> \u2013 if a person asked another, \u201ctell me an equivalent of <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>\u2019s divine foot\u201d, the other person will say \u201cemperumAn\u2019s other foot\u201d. His other divine foot rose all the way to the waters surrounding the universe as a cover (here <em>pAr<\/em> is taken to mean universe). This is similar to <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thirumangai-azhwar\/\">thirumangai AzhwAr<\/a>\u2019s periya thirumozhi 10-6-3 \u201c<em>pavva nIr udai AdaiyAgach chuRRi<\/em>\u201d (water circling the earth like its dress). If <em>pAr<\/em> were taken to be earth, the other divine foot rose till the waters surrounding earth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>sUr uruvil &#8230; aRigilEn<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/poigai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> says \u201csince one divine foot spread all over the world and there was no space to keep the other divine foot, I am not able to understand how you measured this world\u201d.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> asks him back \u201cwhy could you not understand?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>sUr uruvil pEyaLavu kaNda perumAn<\/strong> \u2013 isn\u2019t this (the trouble that pUthanA had to undergo) what people who set out to measure you, have to suffer? <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/poigai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> asks <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> \u201care you in a state where someone could measure you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>sUr uruvil<\/strong> \u2013 as per the thamizh lexicon \u201c<em>sUrum aNangum dheyvappeNNE\u201d<\/em> \u2013 sUr refers to a divine person. Here, this term actually refers to the demon pUthanA, but since she took the form of yaSOdhA, she is referred to as divine person. In perumAL thirumoizhi 7-5, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/kulasekarazhwar\/\">kulaSEkara AzhwAr<\/a> refers to yaSOdhA as \u201c<em>dheyva nangai yasOdhai<\/em>\u201d (the divine lady yaSOdhA). One can also consider sUr as a demon with a beautiful form. This is because demons are considered as belonging to the class of dhEvas as per the saying \u201c<em>piSAsO dhEva yOnaya:<\/em>\u201d in amara kOsam 1-1-11.<\/p>\n<p><strong>pEyaLavu kaNda<\/strong> \u2013 considering [measuring \/ estimating] her as a demon. Measuring is also killing. She [pUthanA] came to kill <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>, who, knowing her intention, killed her instead. Oh emerpumAn! When you measure someone, you don\u2019t have any sorrow [difficulty]; but when someone comes to measure you, (s)he get killed, like pUthanA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>perumAn<\/strong> \u2013 by killing her, you removed your enemy and gave yourself to the world as its Lord. <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/poigai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> points, out through this word, to harivamSam 65 which says \u201c<em>sthanyam thath vishasammiSram rasyamAsIth jagadhgurO<\/em>\u201d (the poisoned milk of pUthanA\u2019s bosom was like a sweet juice to kaNNan, the Lord of the world).<\/p>\n<p><strong>aRigilEn nI aLavu kaNda neRi<\/strong> \u2013 I do not know what you are thinking of. I do not know whether you are enabling me or not, to know you. Another interpretation \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/poigai-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> cannot estimate each and every deed of <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>\u2019s. Just as you took the earth, which was snatched by mahAbali, under your feet, you had taken me under your feet and removed by enemies just as you removed pUthanA.
