Introduction<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the previous pAsuram, mAmunigaL <\/a>said \u201cmaruLAlE pulan pOga vAnjai seyyum endhan<\/em>\u201d, thereby requesting SrI rAmAnuja<\/a> to rechannelize his mind that is controlled by senses that are in turn powered by his (mAmunigAL\u2019s<\/a>) popular and cruel sins. But even after that, the effect of sins continued to linger. mAmunigaL <\/a>continues that his mind goes after all those earthly, condescending, loathable and so called \u201cpleasurable\u201d things in the world. These things run amok in his heart and mind and had left him wondering what caused them in the first place. mAmunigaL<\/a> is left bewildered as to what is the source of those sins and their effects and finally says that he does not know the answer to this question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

yEdhenRaRiyEn ethirAsA!!! thIdhAgum<\/em>
aimpulanilAsai adiyEn mananthannai<\/em>

Word-by-Word Meanings:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

ethirAsA \u2013 Oh emperumAnArE!!!
thIdhAgum \u2013 That which is deemed \u201cdetrimental\u201d for the soul
aimpulanil \u2013 and is commonly called as the \u201csenses\u201d of \u201cfive senses\u201d that continuously impacts
adiyEn \u2013 my
mananthannai \u2013 heart\u2019s
Asai \u2013 desire for (earthly happiness).
vanbudanE \u2013 (These senses) forcefully
thAn vandhu \u2013 out of its own volition, without any compulsion
adarum \u2013 has decided to reside in me forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(The reason for this taste\/heart\u2019s yearning, mAmunigal <\/a>asks)
URRamO  \u2013 is it the attachment that is rooted at
vAsanaiyil \u2013the innumerable sins from the times of yore?
valvinaiyO \u2013 is it my popular karmic sins
mALAdha \u2013 that is beyond any reconciliation (that which cannot be removed by any kind of penance)
yEdhenRu \u2013 what is it?
aRiyEn \u2013 I do not know about it. (The purport is that mAmunigAL <\/a>wants SrI rAmAnuja to find the reason for it and subsequently obliterate it without any trace of it).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simple Translation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

mAmunigaL <\/a>asks srI rAmAnuja<\/a> the reason why his (mAmunigaL\u2019s<\/a>) mind and heart go after earthly pleasures controlled by sins, though he knows that they are condemned by the scriptures as \u201cdetrimental\u201d to the soul. Unable to know the reason for why these senses and sins torture him incessantly, he requests the question to srI rAmAnuja<\/a> and asks him to find the reason. Subsequently, he requests him to annihilate them and take him to his fold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There are somethings that are deemed \u201cdetrimental\u201d for the soul. As they say \u201cainkaruvi kaNdavinbam<\/em> (thiruvAimozhi 4.<\/a>9.10)\u201d, the soul goes after all those so-called pleasurable things in the world, after being triggered by the five senses. Not stopping with that, the soul yearns more and more for that pleasure. These are the pleasures have been condemned in our scriptures as \u201cdetrimental\u201d for the soul.  As said in the phrase, \u201charandhiprasapam mana:<\/em>\u201d \u201cthese sense bulldoze over me out of its own volition and pull me in different directions. I have surrendered to your lotus feet and have accepted it as my sole refuge\u201d. mAmunigaL <\/a>guess the reason for this. He asks SrI rAmAnuja<\/a>, As kUraththAzhvAn<\/a> says, \u201cdhurvAsanAthradhi mathas sUkhamindhiryOththam hAthum namE madhiralam varadhAdhirAja:<\/em>\u201d, is it because of me trapped in the web of sins accrued over eons? If not, as nammAzhvAr <\/a>said \u201cmadhiyilEn valvinaiyE mALAdhO<\/em> (thiruvAimozhi 1.4.3<\/a>)\u201d, is it my strong karma that can never be relinquished by penance nor by suffering the effects of it? I do not know what is the reason. I request you, SrI rAmAnuja<\/a> to investigate the reason for this and subsequently annihilate them\u201d. In this pAsuram and the earlier pAsuram<\/a>, the phrase \u201caimpulan<\/em>\u201d refers to worldly pleasures that are derived by senses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
