Why do you find fault with us? It is the nature of the samsAram (materialistic world). You asked us to attain \u201c<em>thaN thuzhAy mArban<\/em>\u201d (one who is adorning the comfortable thuLasi garland). He is so far away that we cannot even reach him. There are several other hurdles for us in samsAram in reaching him. Please tell us how to overcome these hurdles and show us the person who we have to reach\u201d. AzhwAr tells them \u201cattain the emperumAn who came here as the divine son of chakravarthi (reference is to <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">SrI rAma<\/a>, who incarnated here as the son of dhaSaratha chakravathi) and who has as his nature, removal of all hurdles \u201c This is the basis for the 7<sup>th<\/sup> pAsuram. Let us see the pAsuram:<\/p>\n<p>\u0baa\u0bc1\u0bb2\u0bc8\u0baf\u0bb1\u0bae\u0bbe\u0b95\u0bbf \u0ba8\u0bbf\u0ba9\u0bcd\u0bb1 \u0baa\u0bc1\u0ba4\u0bcd\u0ba4\u0bca\u0b9f\u0bc1 \u0b9a\u0bae\u0ba3\u0bae\u0bc6\u0bb2\u0bcd\u0bb2\u0bbe\u0bae\u0bcd<br \/>\n\u0b95\u0bb2\u0bc8\u0baf\u0bb1\u0b95\u0bcd \u0b95\u0bb1\u0bcd\u0bb1 \u0bae\u0bbe\u0ba8\u0bcd\u0ba4\u0bb0\u0bcd \u0b95\u0bbe\u0ba3\u0bcd\u0baa\u0bb0\u0bcb \u0b95\u0bc7\u0b9f\u0bcd\u0baa\u0bb0\u0bcb \u0ba4\u0bbe\u0bae\u0bcd<br \/>\n\u0ba4\u0bb2\u0bc8\u0baf\u0bb1\u0bc1\u0baa\u0bcd\u0baa\u0bc1\u0ba3\u0bcd\u0b9f\u0bc1\u0bae\u0bcd \u0b9a\u0bbe\u0bb5\u0bc7\u0ba9\u0bcd \u0b9a\u0ba4\u0bcd\u0ba4\u0bbf\u0baf\u0bae\u0bcd \u0b95\u0bbe\u0ba3\u0bcd\u0bae\u0bbf\u0ba9\u0bcd \u0b90\u0baf\u0bbe<br \/>\n\u0b9a\u0bbf\u0bb2\u0bc8\u0baf\u0bbf\u0ba9\u0bbe\u0bb2\u0bcd \u0b87\u0bb2\u0b99\u0bcd\u0b95\u0bc8 \u0b9a\u0bc6\u0bb1\u0bcd\u0bb1 \u0ba4\u0bc7\u0bb5\u0ba9\u0bc7 \u0b85\u0bb5\u0bbe\u0ba9\u0bcd.<\/p>\n<p><em>pulaiyaRamAgi ninRa puththodu samaNamellAm<\/em><br \/>\n<em>kalaiyaRak kaRRa mAndhar kANbarO kEtparO thAm<\/em><br \/>\n<em>thalaiyaRuppuNdum sAvEn saththiyam kANmin aiyA<\/em><br \/>\n<em>silaiyinAl ilangai seRRa dhEvanE dhEvan avAn<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/yourlisten.com\/sarathy.thothathri\/thirumalai-07\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Listen<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"width: 100%;\" src=\"\/\/yourlisten.com\/embed\/html5?17579398\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>word-by-word meaning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>kalai \u2013 Sasthrams (vEdhas, ithihAsams etc)[all sacred texts]<br \/>\naRak kaRRa mAndhar \u2013 men (and women) who had learnt well the deeper, real meanings<br \/>\npulai aRam Agi ninRa \u2013 those other lowly sects such as<br \/>\npuththodu samaNamellAm \u2013 boudhdham, jainam etc<br \/>\nkANbarO \u2013 will they investigate with their hearts?<br \/>\nkEtparO thAm \u2013 will they listen\u00a0 with their ears?<\/p>\n<p>Moreover<br \/>\nthalaiyaRuppuNdum \u2013 even if I were beheaded<br \/>\nsAvEn \u2013 I will not die<br \/>\naiyA \u2013 Oh, the great people<br \/>\nkANmin \u2013 Please see (I will show you)<br \/>\nsaththiyam \u2013 this is a fact<br \/>\nsilaiyinAl \u2013 with his bow<br \/>\nilangai seRRa \u2013 one who destroyed lankA<br \/>\ndhEvanE \u2013 and became famous<br \/>\ndhEvan AvAn \u2013 the one <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> who is fit to be attained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>vyAkhyAnam (Explanatory Notes)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>pulaiyaRamAgi ninRa puththodu samaNamellAm<\/strong> \u2013 the four types of baudhdha matham (philosophy or sect) , jaina matham etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>pulaiyaRa<\/strong> \u2013 lowly sects. Those who do not accept vEdhas as basis. The four types of baudhdham were headed by four disciples of budhdha namely vaibhAshikan, southrAnthikan, yOgAchAran and mAdhyamikan. Of these, vaibhAshikan\u2019s hypothesis is that there are only two entities \u2013 knowledge and materials dependent on knowledge. There is no one called gyAthA (one who has knolwedge). Knowledge is gained through <em>prathyaksham<\/em> (what is seen by the eyes) and <em>anumAnam<\/em> (deductive logic). There is nothing called SAsthras which pass on knowledge. The second disciple, southrAnthikan\u2019s view is that there is only knowledge. There is no gyAthA. Since knowledge is of many types, there are many kinds of materials that we know through deductive logic. yOgAchAran, the third disciple said that that there is nothing that can be gained through <em>prathyaksham<\/em> or <em>anumAnam<\/em>. There is only knowledge and no material having knowledge. These three disciples accept that whatever material they accept is of transient (lasting for fleeting moments) nature only. The fourth disciple, mAdhyamikan refused even the knowledge accepted by yOgAchAran. He said that everything is in vacuum (this is called as <em>sarva sUnyavAdham <\/em>in their parlance). The jaina matham which does not accept baudhdha matham asks \u201chow can there be vacuum? This world which is based on cause and effect is composed of permanent and transient components. It is one and it is many. It is true and it is false\u201d Thus the world is of many different types, says jainan. <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thondaradippodi-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> calls such persons and philosophies as lowly type (<em>pulaiyaRam<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Agi ninRa<\/strong> \u2013 just as weeds grow opposing the growth of paddy, these lowly sects have been opposing the vaidhika dharmam (philosophy based on vEdhas) for a long time. Usage of the word <em>ellAm<\/em> refers to other philosophies such as sAnkhyam, vaiSEshikam, pAsupatham etc. The reason for <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thondaradippodi-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> terming these as lowly secs is because in <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>\u2019s leelA vibhUthi (material realm), if a person harms another\u00a0 (by thought or by words or by action) he accrues sin and these sects harm both emperumAn and his chEthanars \/ achEthanams (sentient and insentient entities) using the sword of agyAnam (ignorance). They are the types who try to destroy the indestructible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>kalaiyaRak kaRRa mAndhar<\/strong> \u2013 those who firmly believe in Sruthi (vEdhas), smruthi (the works of manu et al which came to explain vEdhas), ithihAsa (epics such as SrI rAmAyaNam and mahAbhAratham) and purANas (the 18 primary purANas such as SrIvishNu purANam etc) and know the deep meanings of vEdhas. They are people such as <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/kurathazhwan\/\">kUraththAzhwAn <\/a>et al.<\/p>\n<p><strong>kANbarO kEtparO thAm<\/strong> \u2013 will they delve into such sects with their hearts or hear them with their ears? Once kUraththAzhwAn came home late after listening to the works of a lowly sect. His father, kUraththAzhwAr, gave him SrIpAdha thIrtham (the divine water of a SrIvaishNava\u2019s lotus feet) to purify him and told him \u201cshould you listen to the works of a lowly sect? You should remember <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thondaradippodi-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a>\u2019s pAsuram &#8211; <em>pulaiyaRa kaRRa mAndhar kANbarO kEtparO thAm..<\/em>.\u00a0 \u201d. It is not necessary for the bAhyars (those who do not accept vEdhas) and kudhrushtis (those who give wrong interpretation to vEdhas) to do any harmful act for us to get worried. Their mere existence is enough worry for us. This is similar to bhagavath bhAgavathas\u2019 (devotees of <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a>) mere existence being good for us even if they do not do anything good to us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>thalaiyaRappuNdum sAvEn saththiyam kANmin<\/strong> \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thondaradippodi-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a> says \u201dfor those who do not have belief in the words of faultless vEdham (SAsthram or Sruthi), I shall prove, without any doubt, through prathyaksham (direct evidence seen by the eye). You can see that\u201d.\u00a0 In olden days, to prove a statement that someone makes, that person will hold a red hot weapon (called <em>mazhu<\/em> or axe) and say that the red hot iron will not scald him if what he says is true. In the same way AzhwAr takes an oath saying that even if he were beheaded, he will not die and the onlookers can get convinced that the supreme entity to be attained is the divine son of dhaSarathan, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">SrI rAman<\/a>. vyAkhyAthA <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/periyavachchan-pillai\/\">periyavAchchAn piLLai<\/a> quotes the words of lakshmaNa from SrI rAmAyaNam \u201c<em>dharmAthmA sathyasanthaScha rAmO dhASarathir yathi<\/em> I <em>paurushE chAprathidhvanthva: Sarainam jahi rAvaNim<\/em> II\u201d (If it is true that dhaSaratha\u2019s son SrI rAma is a righteous person, speaks only truth, has no equal in his valour, let this arrow destroy rAvaNa\u2019s son indhrajith). It is a fact that the arrow killed indhrajith, who could not be killed by anybody. In the same way, AzhwAr wishes to establish the supremacy of <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> by taking an oath that even if he were beheaded, he will not die. Could such a thing happen? wonder samsAris&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>saththiyam kANmin<\/strong> \u2013 why do you doubt an event that you are going to witness right in front of your eyes? See what I am going to do now and learn the truth, says <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thondaradippodi-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>aiyA<\/strong> \u2013 when the samsAris hesitated to see what he was going to do, he pleads with them calling them \u201d<em>aiyA<\/em>\u201d (elderly person). samsAris said \u201cplease do not carry out such difficult acts. We believe your oath. Please let us know who the person is that we have to attain\u201d&#8230;&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p><strong>silaiyinAl ilangai seRRa dhEvanE dhEvan AvAn<\/strong> \u2013 To ensure that those who granted boons to rAvaNan (brahmA et al) do not lose face, <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/sriman-narayanan\/\">emperumAn<\/a> came down to earth as the son of dhaSarathan. With the help of the bow in his hand, he destroyed lankA. Such emperumAn, SrI rAman is the object [goal] for you to reach, avers the <a href=\"http:\/\/acharyas.koyil.org\/index.php\/thondaradippodi-azhwar\/\">AzhwAr<\/a>. What would have happened if he had destroyed rAvaNan with his will power (<em>sankalpam<\/em>) sitting in SrIvaikuNtam? In that case, the boons which were acting as a protective cover for lankA would have gone waste. Since the boons were granted by his followers (brahmA, rudhra et al) he had to keep their words.
