sarvESvaran, as the celibate boy, went to the sacrificial arena of mahAbali, the leader of demons and the one who has a generous hand, and begged the earth with his hand; being the strong one in rAmAvathAram, he shot down the seven ebony trees; being the one with many hands, being the one who is mercifully residing in himavAn, being the one who is eternally residing in thirumAlirunjOlai which is known as southern thirumalA, being the lord of all, sarvESvaran who eliminated the sorrow of SrI gajEndhrAzhwAn who is having a strong trunk, is present in thirumalA. Oh mind! Reach there.
Highlights from vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
vaN kaiyAn … – He was generous. Though he was the leader of the demons, since he had a noble quality named generosity, he could not be killed by arrow. He was happy to give; hence, emperumAn made himself an alms-seeker and accepted the worlds through the act which gave mahAbali happiness.
mANiyAy maN kaiyAl irandhAn – emperumAn went to mahAbali’s sacrificial arena, with a form which is well established in begging and accepted the earth which went through many transformations under his control just as cotton goes through twelve stages of development.
marAmaram … – One who would carry out acts to bring in faith in his devotees.
valaththinAn – Strong one.
eNkaiyAn – One who has many hands to hold many different weapons to cause destruction to the enemies of his devotees. Alternatively, AzhwAr could be speaking about emperumAn in thiruvattabhuyakaram dhivyadhESam.
imayaththuLLAn – One who is present in thiruppiridhi in himavAn.
irunjOlai … – One who arrived and resided in thirumalai of southern direction which is mlEchcha bhUmi [Very long ago, the southern portion of bhAratha dhESam was considered as an inferior place inhabited by uncultured persons].
thiN kai mA thuyar thIrththavan – When SrI gajEndhrAzhwAn was caught by the crocodile and was in a helpless state, emperumAn arrived there, eliminated his sorrow and protected him.
thiN kai – One who would torment others with his strong trunk, was tormented by the crocodile and emperumAn eliminated such suffering.
thiruvEngadam – To have the shortcoming of arriving late to help SrI gajEndhrAzhwAn after he could not protect himself anymore, emperumAn arrived in thiruvEngadam to help the devotees before they get into trouble.
